Picked this site mainly due to it's location in order to attend the Run to the Hills volkswagen Show nearby over the bank holiday weekend, but what a great choice!
We were really impressed with this site, it is exceptionally well kept, spacious and laid out. All pitches are individual private hardstandings and the site boasts two spotless utility blocks with plenty of hot water, free hairdryers and fresh cut flowers in the ladies shower rooms which was a really nice touch.
The kids were happy with the great play area and ample space to run around. It is nice to see that the owners of this site have obviously given a great deal of thought into the comfort of it's visitors as they have left a lot of free space around this site instead of squeezing in extra pitches.
The site was fully booked due to being the bank holiday but was still really peaceful and relaxing.
The staff were polite, helpful and informative, all necessary information is clearly displayed around the site and the reception area also has a small shop.
Mainly used by caravanners but this site also accepts trailer tents and motorhomes, our pitch was perfect for our campervan and drive-away awning but please note if using an awning, rock pegs are an absolute must!
The park felt very secure with the barrier system at the main entrance. The gates at the footpath entrances were locked overnight. The facilities and site are well lit at night and we noticed that there is even an overnight area with electric for late arrivals.
Lickpenny is fully deserving of all the fantastic reviews it has received, it is very reasonably priced. There is a lot of attention to detail at this site, it is so well thought out and there is nothing negative to say about it, definitely 10/10, therefore I can thoroughly recommend this site and will definitely visit it again on our next visit to Derbyshire.

We have just returned from Lickpenny and have to agree that it is fantastic.
We arrived on a day when it had been raining constantly since early morning but because all the pitches are hardstanding there were no problems with puddles or mud. Our pitch was on a bit of a slope but we found if we parked in the middle of the pitch it was much flatter. Most pitches looked pretty flat but the whole site is on a hill so you can't expect them to be perfectly level. The people who run the site are really helpful and gave us some blocks of wood to level us up. The pitches are all really big and there were some huge caravans and motorhomes there. Because the site is on a hill there are wonderful views from most of the pitches, especially the ones up the top away from the playground. The main thing that impressed us was the amount of space there was. Lickpenny isn't one of those sites that cram in as many pitches as possible and all the pitches are separated by bushes or mounds which makes them all seem very private. There was loads of space for kids (and dads) to play football or cricket without being right on top of the caravans. The playground was very popular with children of all ages, even in the rain. There are also picnic benches dotted around and we used these several times for eating our dinner.
All the facilities are perfect and everything is kept spotlessly clean. The showers were very nice and the hairdryer was free. There is even a microwave in the washing up area. The shop is well stocked with day to day things but there are plenty of shops in Matlock.
The surrounding area is unbelievably hilly. There are lots of little narrow bendy roads which seem to get steeper as you go up. Its very pretty and some of the views are amazing. If you go from the site into Chesterfield there is a huge hill called Slack Hill which is quite an experience for a family from flat Essex. We liked visiting Matlock Farm Park where the animals are really friendly. Gullivers Kingdom was good and Crich Tramway Museum is worth a visit. There are also hundreds of wonderful walks for all different abilities in the area. We took a trip up through the Peak District to Castleton where there are several caverns. The road down to them is great, really steep and bendy with sheep everywhere. The caverns are quite expensive and were very busy when we visited but the countryside is lovely.
We loved Lickpenny and would recommend it to everyone. The site has no bad points that we could find. The location is also ideal for visiting the area.

This was our first visit to this site! We were overwhelmed with how lovely this site is!The pitches were huge and the facilities were up to date and spotless - even better than some hotels we have been in!
Lots of space for children to let off steam, so we were pleased when we were asked on the phone if we wanted to be put somewhere quieter!
It is laid out in attractive terraces, with some privacy between each pitch and lots of greenery!
The owners and their staff were so friendly and helpful!
There is a nice walk to the local garden centre (Scotland Nurseries)which has a nice tea room and restaurant and gives 10% discount off breakfast when you mention the site!
We will definitely return!

Excellent, attractive well maintained site. Obviously laid out by people who know what caravanners look for. Level hard standing pitches are huge (rock pegs + heavy hammer essential). Even Vans pitched sideways with awnings, annexes, outdoor furniture barbecues in position and tow cars parked have space left.
The facilities are spotlessly clean at all times.
The site at night is very quiet.Apart from weekend motorcycles which congregate in Matlock Bath and buzz about like demented wasps. Not a problem though.
Plenty to do in the area. Wingfield Hall is a no no. It is now a ruin closed to everyone. We found.
Best shopping town. Chesterfield
Best Chippy. Matlock Green
Best pub grub Royal Oak Tansley.
Nearest Supermarkets Somerfield,Co-Op,Sainsbury
All in Matlock.
Thanks to all the staff for a great stay.
Don't expect great fuel economy. All Derbyshire roads appear to be uphill whichever direction you choose. Kelstedge Bank is a stunner.

Sadly we only had one night on this lovely site! We had booked two but had to leave a day early. We were given a full refund for the night we missed too.
The pitches were massive and all hardstandings. There are 2 toilet/shower blocks on site, that were absolutely spotless at all times. There is also an indoor washing up area with 2 sinks and a microwave for campers to use. There was also a laundry and spotless wet rooms with toilets and privacy cubicles with sinks in each block. There is a great dog walk on site, although it was very misty and muddy the day we were there.
We nipped into the Scotland Nursery (nearest garden centre) on arrival and found it to be very expensive! The next garden centre (on the way to Matlock) is in Tansley (Matlock Garden Centre). The food looked good and was well priced but no dogs were allowed in the garden centre including the outside seating area. We had some good pub grub in the local in Tansley (The Royal Oak Inn) - a proper old fashioned pub with friendly landlord - well behaved dogs welcome - cash only behind the bar though, which includes for food! The walk from Lickpenny into Matlock seemed endless and we found Matlock to be a bit of a 'scruffy' town.
We only had one day there so didn't get to visit any other area, which we're assured would've been much nicer than the town area. Buses are not very frequent and don't stop anywhere near the campsite. The walk back to the site from Matlock - all uphill - is a killer! A lovely site but not what we would call a 'motorhome site' as there's nothing within a reasonable walking distance or a decent bus service! Would recommend it to caravanners or anyone with a car though.

Our first visit to this site but I am sure it wont be our last. The site is spotlessly clean and tidy, from the toilet and shower blocks, to the childrens playground. We had a deluxe pitch with a view to Riber castle. Unfortunately due to the weather on saturday it wasn't visible. But it was there sunday morning once the mist had gone :-) It was great having your own water on tap and your own drainage for just a little extra charge. Our pitch was very spacious and private with hedges either side. We drove into Matlock and also Dovedale and Carsington Water. There's alot of beautiful places to visit close by to the site. It is a lovely site and well worth a visit :-)

What a fantastic site. Only our second site to visit and this was one to put in our favourites book.
The shower block and toilets were spotless with everything in them including a hairdryer(nice smelling soap too)
The pitches are very generous and private.
The whole site is well kept pleasant and clean. We will definitely be ging to this one again and it is only 25 mins from home LOL.

Nice sized hardstanding pitches with water and chemical disposal close by. Clean shower block and small but well stocked shop on site. Nice views and mature grounds.
Generous dog walk in the centre of the site with gravel pathways and trees all around. The bluebells were out too.
We had a very pleasant weekend here and will be returning.

Lovely site with good views especially from the super pitches.
Toilet, washing and laundry facilities are excellent and spotlessly clean. The shower blocks were well heated too.
The dog walking areas were impressive and there was plenty of space for energetic children.
I was on a service pitch with 16 amp electric, waste and water but unfortunatley my aqua roll hose didn't fit the tap. My fault I suppose but it's worth checking you have the correct fitting.
The pitch was a big, flat hardstanding. Separated from the neighbouring pitch by a raised mound/feature. Most of the other pitches looked large too. All of them had a boundary of some sort and some were afforded a degree of privacy. The site is well laid out and appears to have good drainage.
The location is fairly central for Peak District activities. Matlock Bath is 10 minutes away. Chatsworth 20 mins. Ashbournes a little further but worth a visit. My wife and I used the site as a base for walking around Dovedale and Chatsworth.
I didn't indulge but a cooked breakfast or lunch is available at a garden centre just five minutes walk from the site.
I like this site and will definitely be back.
