Visited this site following reading the excellent reviews. Rang the site before hand to attempt to book, but was informed the site did not take bookings and to just turn up early to ensure a spot at this popular campsite. We arrived at 11 am, to find out the site only took 2 nights minimum booking!(this was NOT mentioned on the phone earlier in the week). We had only planned on 1 night due to work commitments etc, and had our heart set on staying in Robin Hoods Bay, so we had to pay for 2 nights accommodation. As we awaited our pitch ( about 1 hour sat in the car, with excited kids & dog), we noticed the reception put up a further sign informing campers of a minimum of 3 nights!. The camp site was extremely busy and the staff were obviously taking advantage of the situation.

Apart from this bad experience the site was clean, well equipped and situated very well. The 10 minute walk to the beach is quite hilly and a short walk through a cow field quite scary. But very exciting at night walking through the darkness, following several pints at The Bay Hotel Pub.

Just back from this site with positive and negative thoughts.

Positive in that its a lovely location, the staff are friendly and that it does indeed have modern and quite clean facilities.

Negative in that it was crowded, there was no space to play near our tents with our children, we were guided to the pitch that they wanted us to have. The showers are not adequate for the numbers staying when busy. A long wait in store for showers, toilets and washing up facilities. We didn't mind the 5am awakening from the hitchcock type seagulls. Probably would only go back during the week when not too busy.

We spent a very enjoyable weekend here, our first camping trip in our brand new tent! We (2 adults and 2 children, 2 and 5) were a little nervous about getting a pitch as we drove to the site having been told we could not book. We were unable to arrive before 5 o'clock but in the end this was not a problem at all and a number of people turned up considerably later. It seems this site is a good option if you want to have a spontaneous camping trip as many campsites which require booking would be full at this time of year.

We were pitched in the square field which I understand is only open at busy times. This is a beautiful open field with horses in the neighbouring field. Although busy we did not feel cramped. The square field does not have it's own separate shower/wash facilities but rather shares with the neighbouring field. However we never queued for the toilets and if you can be flexible about your shower time you will be fine. At 11am I had the whole block to myself and enjoyed a very nice shower - 5 minutes of lovely hot water.

Once we had seen the 'family field' we were so pleased we had not been pitched there, this is a small field positioned between some houses and a fairly ugly farm building. Reception is also housed next to this field so there will be a steady stream of cars pulling up to check in. The play area was disappointing with litter overspilling the bins. If you have the option, ask to be in the large or square field even if you are a family with young children, you will be pitched in a far more attractive position.

The walk from the site to the beach is wonderful and Robin Hood's bay is delightful especially on a summer evening. Whitby is only 10 minutes drive away and is a fantastic place to spend the day, try to arrive fairly early as parking spaces tend to fill up quickly. It is worth the queue for fish and chips at the Magpie takeaway as they are truly delicious! This was for us a very positive first camping trip and we shall no doubt return - as long as we are not pitched in the family field!

We booked Middlewood Farm as we believed from the website that it was a peaceful campsite and we were really looking forward to our break.

When we arrived we were shown to our pitch and behind our tent was a field where families were playing cricket and rounders and it seemed idyllic.

The following day we returned from the beach and we were amazed to find that not only that playing field was full of tents but another field at the top of ours was also full. This is no problem if the campsite has the adequate facilities. All these people shared in the ladies/gents toilet/shower block five showers and six toilets. They were not cleaned in the three days we were there, sanitary bins were overflowing and my husband dreaded going to the gents as it stank. I got up before 6am every morning just so I could have my five minute shower ( they are on a timer) and people were queueing five deep so they could wash up. There are two taps for drinking water but the one nearest to the tents was skirting water from the handle and only a dribble came out of the tap and inches from this tap were overgrown stingers

This was our first camping trip so we really wasn't quite sure what to expect! We arrived on Saturday along with so many others! We had hoped to stay for 2 nights and was told that wouldn't be a problem, however we would have to move pitch for the second night. (We didn't think this would be 2 much of a problem!) We followed the nice man to our pitch which was in the top field, over the course of the day more and more people arrived, by the end the field was jammed full with the tents so close you were almost touching! The shower block was reasonably clean however you had to queue for ages to use the facilities. The Sunday was a lot quieter and we were given a pitch in the main field. The toilet block was a lot easier to access, and you didn't really have to queue although I did notice it wasn't as clean as when we arrived. All in all a nice site. We also felt that at £28 per night for 2 adults 3 kids and a dog that it was quite expensive.

On arrival to the site we booked in at the reception, the staff were very helpful and friendly, We camped in the main field and were shown to our pitch by a warden. The pitches are all flat and the field a good size and not overcrowded.

The showers/toilet blocks were clean and a good size (and free) we never had to queue for a shower, the plug sockets in here are free too,

For those with babies there was a private bathroom to hire with a bath but we didn't use this so cant comment on it. My only vice was with the washing up area as there were only 3 sinks which looked dirty and no bins there.

At the main gate there is a takeaway van which again didn't use myself but looked very busy!

My daughter took advantage of the play area behind the reception which is small but serves its purpose she had a great time.

Overall this is a lovely site and would definitely go again, its a 10 minute walk to the beach and Robinhoods Bay which has a few pubs and restaurants and a short 5 min drive into Whitby.

We were directed onto the square field by a warden where the cars were parked in regimented rows and your tent alongside. I have never seen so many tents on one field. I suppose this was due to it being the school summer holidays. The good point was that you didn't have to book in advance. In my view there was not enough toilets/showers/washing up facilities for the sheer volume of people camping and you had to queue. It was very noisy but we have 2 children ourselves so it didn't matter to us. You did seem to be very close to your neighbours!

That aside, it is a lovely location, super walk down the fields and wood to Robin Hoods Bay about 15 minutes. Also the site is next to the old railway line cycle track so take your bike! The staff were very friendly and helpful. We would visit again but would hope to stay on the small field near the farm.

When we rang to book we were told that they only book electric and wouldn't take a deposit for a non-elecrtic pitch so rather than travel over 80 miles and be turned away we booked on electric. When I arrived on site, the reception was very busy and quite a long slow queue. Someone said they would show me to the pitch after waiting 15 mins in the queue but after 10 mins I went onto a field to try and find myself, ended up in a field and there seemed to be dozens of tents all crammed together next to that was another field and again a load of tents together. Luckily I was on the wrong pitch and was soon moved to the pitch which I was supposed to be, on the 'family pitch' near the children's play area. We were right in the walk way down to the beach so everyone walking by every 2 mins. Didn't mind the play area noise too much but the generator coming from behind the bush near the farm sheds along with the smell was unbearable. I think in the whole 48 hour stay it was turned off for about 5 hours.

The pub 10 mins away was very unfriendly and after walking from the beach with hungry children on a Sunday was told we couldn't order food until 6pm, went in at 3.30! and also we couldn't even look at a menu until 6pm. The toilets were clean. A bit of peace, and maybe to put a shop on here would have made out trip a bit better since the shop in the village always ran out of bread!

On the good side the walk to Robyn Hoods Bay was lovely, and the place itself is fantastic. Nice friendly pubs. Nice beach, although the tide does come in quite fast. Very friendly locals. And a few miles from Whitby

Having just spent a few days at this site, we were pleased with the facilities and the location. The toilets and showers were well kept and there were some great views across the bay. The pub nearby was within a 10 min walk and a general store within 5mins. What was a concern to us was the number of tents that the owners had allowed onto the site, it was very crowded, and was difficult to move your car on and off the pitch, without getting people to move the vehicles/guide ropes. Also, as this is a working farm, you have to be prepared to be woken up at 6,30 by the cows and the farm workers. A nice enough site , but not the most relaxing break we've ever had!

Just got back from a 3 night break at this site, it is in an ideal location, 5-10 mins walk to the beach, local shops and pubs. Just down the road from Whitby and laods of things to do within a short drive. Thopre's general store stock everything you could need, and was reasonably priced for a village shop.

I was looking for somewhere close to a beach without all the tacky touristy shops and arcades, and this site and location were perfect. There is a free museam and life boat centre in the bay, and just walking round robin hoods bay was brilliant the kids loved it.

The beach has loads of rock pools to explore and high tide was about 4-5pm so can easily spend the whole day on the beach.

Site has ample facilities, my only gripe would be with the state of the toilet/showers by our 3rd day. Showers and toilets were spotless when we arrived but by the 3rd day it became apparent that they were not cleaned very often, as shower trays were dirty and round sinks etc, as this is a more expensive sight I was a little disapointed this. However, there was always plenty of hot water and toilet roll, and the site was pretty much full when we visited which may explain the state of facilities due to the sheer volume of people.

There was a play area for the kids, and my kids loved it, I wouldn't recommend it for teenagers though as they would get bored quickly in my opinion.

All in all a good site ideal for families. One word of warning, this is a working farm and the milking parlor is next to the family field, so be prepared to be woken early by cows mooing lol.
