We arrived after a very windy journey down the A1 and were met with a very friendly reception, quick check in and explanation as to where our pitch was. We were in the adult only area as we were having a child free weekend. I didn't bother trying to put the porch awning up due to weather but the hardstanding pitch would have been big enough. The facilities were always clean and warm with the radio playing in the background. Our area of the site filled up during Friday but never felt crowded. A pleasant 5 minute walk takes into the well kept village with 3 pubs and a post office. We had a few drinks in The Plough as it is advertised as dog friendly, children were also welcomed. It is a very welcoming place with a selection of real ales.

Oakham is a few miles down the road which is a historic small town, you drive past a coop supermarket on the way into town. We did a couple of walks, a 4 mile walk around the peninsular of Rutland water and an eight mile from Empingham (published in the Feb edition of Caravan Club magazine)which takes in part of the edge of Rutland Water including a visitors centre / cafe. The information centre on the site held a lot of leaflets including walks in the area. Would definitely return as this are has a lot to offer and it would also be a good overnighter as it is only a mile from the A1.

The journey home was much calmer without the 50 mph side winds!

First impressions of the site were made after making a telephone booking. We were told in no uncertain terms that the latest check in time was 8pm and if we were on our way and was going to be late we should turn around and go home as we wouldn't be admitted. Finishing work at 6pm and having to change, pack my clothes, sort out the cat and get on the road for the hour and a quarter trip was gong to make things tight - still we like an adventure.

We arrived through the fog at 7.40pm - 20mins to spare to be greeted by a very friendly warden who explained the barrier system, toilets and site. She told us about the local pub which was a five minute walk away before pointing us to our pitch and wishing us a happy stay.

We don't use the facilities on campsites, preferring to use the ones in our van so can't comment on the toilet and shower blocks. However, the site had plenty of hard standing and was very clean. It has lots of open green space but with little or no views because of the flat aspect of the site.

I'd forgotten to replenish the fairy liquid after the last trip so sent my husband to the shop on site to get some. £1.50 for a bottle of ASDA washing up liquid is a little over priced I'd say and was glad that when we walked through the dog walk down to the village we found a very well stocked post office to pick up a few lunch time supplies.

On Saturday evening we walked into the village for a drink and went firstly to the pub that the site warden repeatedly recommended - The Black Horse. This looks nothing from the outside but is a lovely old beamed building inside which is having a bit of an identity crisis. Not a pub to drink in, but large, Georgian style dining tables (not properly cleared from the previous people), brightly lit like a living room with film/tv star signed pictures everywhere. We had one drink and walked to the next pub - The Wheatsheaf. What a difference, attentive bar staff, clean tables and very friendly owners. We didn't eat but the food looked fantastic - huge helpings!

Would we come back here - yes in the winter, the site was fairly quiet and because of the sites location to Rutland Water, no - in the summer because of the sheer size of the site. Over 200 pitches plus tents!

Excellent site with good facilities. The approach road is single track with a dog leg (could get interesting when busy !)'Super pitch' was a decent size. It was very windy & had to take down porch awning, but the surrounding bushes are not very mature yet, so maybe this will help when they do. We ate at the Wheatsheaf which served outstanding food & lots of it. The service was impeccable, weather eating in the bar or restaurant 10/10. Didn't try the other pubs in village. The Fish & chip shop in Cottesmore is first class. The site was quite on our visit, but imagine it gets lively in the warmer months. Would return & re visit Rutland water, so we can cycle round the 25 mile perimeter. Recommended Site.

A lovely level site, ideally placed to visit Rutland Water. We had originally planned to stay 2 nights, but we liked the site so much that we stayed 4 nights. Wardens were very pleasant and helpful, and the large toilet block was always spotlessly clean. All the facilities on the site were excellent.

There were plenty of places to visit near the site and we made the most of our National Trust and English Heritage memberships to visit houses nearby.

Rutland is a very small county but there are quite a few pretty villages to visit, such as Oakham. If we were in that area again, we would definitely stay there.

We have just spent 2 fantastic days on this site & we are definitely returning next year. The site has fantastic washing up/loo/shower facilities(piped music for a bit of a dance in the shower!)including a family bathroom. The pitches are very generous & hole free(no divots to fall in)

Our 6 year old was overjoyed at the play area & was there before the car engine was turned off after our trip out. We stayed in the family field which was perfect as we could see junior from our tent.

We spent the day at Twinlakes theme park which is perfect for the under 10's with loads of rides & animals to see & only 25 mins away at Melton.

We found great food & good hospitality at the Plough pub in the village. Kids & dogs were very welcome but do get there early as it gets very busy(we went at 6. 30 but its open all day)

With planning permission in the pipe line for a pool & log cabins in the works this will be an even greater incentive to go back to this fabulous site. Thanks to all the staff who made us very welcome. Cant wait to go back. (hope the weather will be as good)

Chose this site as it was local and wanted somewhere to go with parents new van to test that everything works.

Despite the wet weather it was a pleasant experience. We were in the rally field as they were quiet full but even this was exceptional we had EHU to our tent and parents had the same on their van. Excellent facilities which are kept really clean and tidy. Superb dog walking area and only a short stroll to the village shop. My only concern is the accessibility for a disabled person as my father is disabled we found it a struggle to manoeuvre his mobility scooter on the gravel area and road which meant we had to take him to the facilities by car. But overall a stunning site superb facilities and defo be revisiting.

The most comfortable site I've ever found. Great showers with roomy cubicles, stools and clothes hooks so clothes/towels stay safely dry. Excellent loos, basins, hairdryers. Also there are good washing up sinks with infinite water hot enough to fill your hot water bottle on a cold night! Pitches are level and huge. A lovely rural area yet handy for the A1 and all local facilities. Site prices are very modest considering what you get, compared to other camping club sites. If you want comfort and convenience, don't even think of going anywhere else.

Had a short break at this site, camped on the family tent field mid way between the toilet block and the play area - perfect with three young kids!

Toilet blocks beautifully clean, even with heavy rain. Showers hot, not overcrowded, plenty of sinks and loos. Also handy to have a family bathroom with bath for those little ones who hate a shower.

The play area is brilliant - good sized wooden climbing frame, swings, huge slide, football goals, lots of play house type things, and a few tractors and diggers - my kids did not want to return to the tent, even in the rain! And the whole thing is on sand, so its like the beach. Just make sure they empty their shoes.

Shop sold all the necessities, ice blocks can be 'rented', staff very friendly.

Couple of points - the site is quite open, and seemed a lot windier than surrounding areas! Also (don't know if this is general practice at a lot of sites) there is a key system to get into the washrooms - I was having a shower one morning, having taken key with me, and my son, who at, nearly 9, I feel is old enough to be trusted in the toilet block on his own, had nearly tied himself in knots waiting for me to return with the key so he could go to the loo.

These small points aside - thoroughly recommended. We will definitely return here.

A very nice site with the largest hardstanding pitches we have seen anywhere.

The site shop sold basics which were a bit pricey with exception of the fantastic fresh eggs.

Onsite facilities were kept very clean by the wardens but I feel there could have been more toilets and sinks for the amount of people on site[especially at weekends]. Privacy cubicles would have been nice in the main toilet block as well as the the adult only section.

Our 2 girls age 4 and 6 loved the sandy park and spent nearly all their time there. The park is much larger than the web photos show and was well used by all the children on site.

A short safe walk gets you into Greetham village which is a very pretty place. The post office sells just about all your daily needs and also has a small tea courtyard out the back which was very reasonably priced.

The 2 pubs in the village we a great bonus if you couldn't be bothered to cook and didn't want to drive. We tried the Plough and enjoyed the food but it was quite expensive for the portions.A great find was the Blue Bull pub a 5 min drive away north on the A1.You were served with a smile, the meals were half the price of the village pubs and were very nice{just a warning, the kids meals are massive so younger kids might want to share].

There's lots to do around the area for all ages in all weather conditions, the girls favorites were Twinlakes, Bourne outdoor pool and the museum in Oakham.

You get used to the jets at the RAF base next door and to be honest its good free entertainment on a slow afternoon!

An overall great site in a great location an well worth a visit.

Just come back from a weekend away at this site. Really enjoyed it. All facilities are nice and clean. Toilet blocks are good including an adults only block with 3 showers and two private wash basins. Washing up facilities nice and clean.

Site is nice and spaced out, even though it was a busy weekend, didn't feel crowded. The ground was a little hard, took a while to hammer in some pegs!

Local village is a short 5 minute walk away. Village has a well stocked shop and two pubs. Rutland water is 4 miles away.

Site is ideally situated to explore Rutland Water. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Will definitely return to this site when visiting this part of the country in future.
