Recently returned from short break here. Lovely clean site. We stayed on the family field which was very quiet when we were there. We were able to relax a couple of pitches up from the playpark. Only criticism is that the playpark is situated in sand, great for the kids but can be a pain in the bum in the tent! Facilities very good. Water was so hot we filled the HW bottles straight from the tap. Showers very good with radio piped into the block. Would definitely stay again.

We chose this site for our very first camping trip after reading the many positive reviews on this website.

Granted we were incredibly lucky with the weather but even if it had rained it would not have spoiled our enjoyment of this site.

We were given a very warm welcome and were given a map of the site showing us exactly where our pitch was. We explained we were complete novices and were told exactly where everything was.

We pitched our tent and decided to find a pub for something to eat. We followed the directions down to the village and stopped at the very first pub we came to - they were also very welcoming. The food was reasonably priced and very tasty (definitely homecooked).

The facilities on the campsite were first class. There was always hot water for washing up and showering (no charge for showers and we didn't have to keep pushing a button). The toilet blocks were always kept clean and stocked with toilet roll. Whilst we didn't use the shop it seemed to stock a variety of things all very reasonably priced.

On the Saturday night we used the fish and chip van that visits the site. The fish and chips were excellent and not too expensive. Many other campers had BBQs and there were a supply of bricks to rest your BBQ on.

I cannot recommend this site enough and would visit again.

I think the main thing to say is we didn't find anything wrong with the site, although as we were only there for a couple of nights we weren't that demanding. Everything was clean and efficient; checking in no problem, staff friendly. The toilets were clean and enough of them. Showers hot and free. There were four washing up basins in our toilet block (I would imagine there would be more in the other block), which were undercover and lit.

The ground was flat and moderately stony, although we didn't need rock pegs. It seemed well drained too. There seemed to be a nice mix of tents and caravans in our field too, which meant that we weren't overwhelmed by the dreaded white boxes. There is a nice, sandy children's play area too in the next field to ours with a footpath through to it, which made it seem just that bit more of an adventure for the kids.

Just about the only criticism I would level (and it isn't really a criticism) is that the whole place was just a bit too 'open'. I feel this was due to it being a 'work in progress', as we noticed hedges had been planted and I think these will go a long way toward giving the place a bit more character as they mature.

In the end we didn't try the village pubs, although we popped into the Black Horse on a false lead that it would be showing the British Lions first test. The pub looked lovely but turned out not to be showing the match, however the barman was very sympathetic and gave us the hot tip for the weekend which was The Railway pub across from the station in Oakham. This was showing the game, was a nice pub with a good pint of London Pride and was just across the way from the excellent Grainstore Brewery.

Anyway, back to the site. We found it fine. It wouldn't cause us a special trip to return, but if visiting the area we would be more than happy to stay there again.

Just returned from a weekend camping at this site. Very clean and well laid out site, made to feel welcome as soon as we arrived. Good facilities - very hot and powerful showers, which you don't have to pay extra for. The best camping showers I've experienced so far! The site is dog friendly and has its own dog walk. Site has a large play area for kids, so site is well used by families.

Really nice site with very clean toilet/showers. Staff helpful and friendly. Well worth a visit and we will be returning again soon!
Only problem was with getting to the site as we managed to get lost in village! We were put in the rally field with a lovely view of the church. We had EHU and the pitch was very level and neat.
Park looked great for the kids although on this occasion we didn't take ours with us. On Saturdays a chip van comes round and you can get a very nice fish and chip supper!

We stayed over the bank holiday weekend on a level grass pitch with EHU. The ground underneath was very hard and we used a lot of steel pegs. The nearest toilet block (2 on site) was always very clean and warm with free showers. The size of the block gives the impression that they wouldn't be able to cope with the number of people, but we didn't have any problems at all.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the small on site shop seemed well stocked for essentials. The village was about a 10 min walk through a path direct from the site and has a small shop which opened at 6.15am and 3 pubs, all of which were good although we preferred The Plough.
Oakham is well worth the short drive and the small garden centre about 10 mins walk away served a good Sunday breakfast. By the notices being displayed, there is a lot of work planned to improve the overall facilities, eg private cubicles in the toilet block and improved lighting. The site can be a little exposed due the flat area and the 'not quite established hedges'.

Just got back from a short stay at this excellent site. We booked at short notice on a bank holiday weekend, but a quick call to the site office yielded a pitch, and an offer of arranging a pitch next to our friends who were also staying. The person who took the booking could not have been more helpful or friendly.

The site is well signposted and consists of three fields, two for caravan and a large flat field for 'family camping'. Pitches are very generous, but the ground is very very hard and you will need to use some decent pegs! Fortunately for us, the well stocked site shop had a good supply at a very reasonable price. It would have been easy for them to mark them up to a captive audience but to their credit they do not. The pitches are level and on grass. At the end of the field is a superb play area for the children.

The toilet block is about 50 yds from the field and was without doubt the best facility I have ever seen on a camp site. Scrupulously clean, loads of hot water at all times of the day, it really ranks as class leading for me.

The dish washing facilities were also very good - lots of hot water. The only drawback was that we couldn't find any facilities for freezing ice blocks, and coupled with that the lack of Electric Hook Ups for tents may mean that long stays are less comfortable than they could be.

The local village was about 10 minutes walk away, with the nearest pub selling a range of real ales. However, you should note that it's very small and if a group of you turn up you may not get seated for dinner. However there are two other pubs down the road which were fine. We returned from the pub and bedded down at about 9:30pm. There was some noise but this abated by around 10 pm, so again, really nothing at all to complain about!

In short, I really cannot rate this site highly enough, and look forward to returning shortly. I guess the only way to improve this site would be the provision of electric hook ups for tents.

It was our first time camping with our 2 children (3 and 6), so we just did a 'taster' camp close to home and stayed just the one night. We will definitely be back!

The tent pitches were great, clean, flat and right next to the children's play area. Lots of stuff for them to do, slide, swings, wooden climbing frame, small football pitch and toddler play area - all well maintained and safe.

The site itself was very well kept, clean, no litter. The washing up area is modern and clean. The security into the site was comprehensive and the warden is onsite, so any late night noise would have been dealt with - but it was very peaceful anyway.
The staff very friendly, helpful and committed to ensuring an enjoyable stay and to ongoing improvements.

The village is picturesque, only a 10 minute slow stroll away and has 3 food bearing pubs.

For me the most important feature was modern, clean loos and shower block - no nasty public toilet smells or 'yukky grubby' stuff underfoot! Lots of hot water, hairdriers and more water pressure in the shower than we have at home - bliss, I didn't want to get out!

In sum, a fab site to which I suspect we will return again and again. I have a feeling we will have to select other sites carefully to avoid being disappointed as this will now be our benchmark on what they should be like.

My partner and I decided to go to this area for Easter weekend, and picked this campsite based on the facilities and how close it was to various tourist attractions we were interested in visiting.

The site is easy to find, as long as you don't use sat nav - just use a good old fashioned map to find the village of Greetham and then road signs will point you the rest of the way.

We got there to find out we'd mistakenly been booked onto the family field (we don't have kids). The owners were incredibly apologetic and although they were full they still bent over backwards to make sure we were happy. As it happened, the family field was fine as some people didn't turn up (presumably due to the less than desirable weather) and the pitches are massive, so noise and overcrowding was definitely not a problem.

The toilet blocks and washing up facilities were fantastic. The owners did report that the occasional tripping out of power could cause the hot water to go off, which did happen whilst we were there, but luckily not when we needed to use the facilities! The toilet blocks were always clean, plenty of loo roll etc. The showers were lovely and hot - and more importantly free and ones that you twist to turn on and off, not mess around pressing buttons etc! There are also hairdryers available.

You couldn't fault anything, really. Added bonuses are the fish and chip van which comes to the site on Saturday evenings and of course ice cream vans. The site is also situated a 5 minute walk from the village, so if you want a few drinks in the pub you don't need to worry about driving!

The owners also have a 'to-do' list of improvements which they have planned in 2009. I think that even without these improvements it's still an excellent site, and we'll definitely be going back when we next visit the area.

This week we were due to spend a week camping at this site, however, we found ourselves leaving nearly 4 days early due to terrible weather. While the facilities were excellent and the staff were fantastic and wonderfully friendly we found that the site was very exposed. The whole area is flat, open and has no vegetation to act as a windbreak. The site have planted some trees, however, these have not reached maturity yet and are of limited use. Consequently we felt that we had to leave early as our tent was being ripped to shreds by the 24mph winds. I WOULD recommend this site to anyone wishing to go camping at a less windy time of year.

The showers were always clean and wonderfully hot. The dishwashing facilities were ample and always provided with hot water. Although we didn't get to using the other facilities, they all looked clean and in good order. There is a useful 'information room' that has plenty of info on local stuff to do and a laundry room. Wi-fi connection is good onsite and the cost isn't too bad either. The children's play area (right next to the family tent field) was really great, well stocked and is now sporting a new climbing frame which my 3 year old absolutely loved.

All the pitches are lovely and flat, however we found it somewhat stoney so take heavy duty pegs with you if you are tenting!

Reception also hosts a little shop which sold the basics (crisps, chocs, eggs, sugar, milk, ice creams, gas, regulators etc) which we found useful when we realised that we had run out of milk! Over the weekend there was also a take-away van that parks up near the shower blocks selling fairly standard (but very welcome!) fare of fish'n'chips, hamburgers and chicken nuggets.

The hardstanding areas for caravans and motor homes looked in very good condition with several new pitches added and more electric hook-ups provided too.

The local area has plenty to do including National Trust properties and the National Space Centre which are all well worth a visit. Barnsdale Gardens (home of Geoff Hamilton's 'Gardeners World' garden) is also only a 10 minute drive away too.

Overall, I would highly recommend a stay at this site. However, be sure that you check the weather forecast before leaving if you plan on tenting as the wind can get up quite a bit!
