It was late September and it felt like people were there for their last camping fix of the season and the place was buzzing. The site facilities were clean. The on site pub/restaurant was good and it was great not to have to go offsite to find a meal. The food was good and there was a friendly atmosphere. I was camping with friends this time, but I did feel I could even come back on my own and feel comfortable. I'll definitely be there this year.

We are a middle aged couple and spent two nights over a weekend here in a tent. Its a very large site with a mixture of caravans and tents. Its more of a holiday camp rather than a campsite. Lots of facilities and mainly family orientated. Pub and shop are good and reasonably priced. Pitch site (we had field 4) was ok and pitches clearly marked. Location is good for walking and cycling. Ashbourne is a 20 minute walk. Would go again but probably in the week in term time. Staff are very good.

We stayed here the end of August for 5 nights, we are a family of four with two teenage children, had a most enjoyable time.

The facilities were very clean, and accessible at all times, the pitch size was one of the biggest we have stayed on (field 3).

We ate in the cafe bar each day, and found the food

Excellent with large portion sizes.

All staff were friendly and polite at all times.

Our children used the pool and cycle hire which they enjoyed and as they are teenagers found the free wifi invaluable.

Over all we cannot find any fault with this site during our stay, would recommend to anyone.

The surrounding area was beautiful and as we took two dogs found the walks enjoyable, a very dog friendly area.

Goodness me. What a wonderful entrance, and drive up to the site. The next part isnt so good. If you are a couple wanting a peaceful weekend away, give this site a miss. You may not get one, 5/6 different car radio stations on at the same time, Sat night disco on the pub lawn 7/11. The pub is great (Callow ale spot on). If you sit in. Outside was like sitting at the bottom of the Pepsi max at Blackpool, screaming children all night, and most of them not really with anyone? 9.30 play park shut. Silence.

If you have young children (ours are grown up now) and like the Butlins type hols, you wont go far wrong here.

The shop is well stocked, but a little expensive. Didn't fancy the showers, used our own. The toilets were spotless.

Just returned from a very boggy bank holiday weekend. Not the best experience as the ground was so muddy it was like Glastonbury around the tents and water had ran into a neighbours tent.

The facilities are pretty good and the staff very welcoming upon arrival. The outdoor pool was warmer than expected. The pub garden is nice.

Very noisy fellow campers til about 12. 30 but I think all went quiet when security was called.

Distinct lack of showers, toilets and wash up areas for a bank holiday weekend with queuing at busy times. Perhaps more facilities needed especially at bank holiday weekends by bring in temporaries?

Overall perhaps the bogginess spoilt what was a good weekend and don't like having to scrub and hose down the groundsheets to try and get the mud and the smell of manure off!

Wouldn't go back unless I knew it was going to be a fabulously hot weekend and ask for a dryer pitch.

We stayed 4 nights at this campsite and in all honesty we were glad to leave. I always see the glass half full as opposed to half empty, but I did struggle on this site.

We were on a pitch close to all the facilities it was noisy, very small and cramped. There was barely room for the caravan, porch awning and car, forget any open space! The camp on the whole felt like Butlins but without the class of Butlins!

There seemed to be so many very small children running around without supervision all times of the day and late into the evening. Please don't write this review of as me being an old misery guts I'm not. We are a young family with 2 kids aged 7 & 8.

We made the best of it by exploring the wonderful surrounding area and a trip to Alton Towers for which it is well located.

A lovely site especially for families with good facilities and lots to do in the surrounding area.

Very friendly and helpful and the electric hookup pitches were spacious.

Good playground. My boys are 10 and 8. A small arcade, sports field and swimming pool and paddling pool. All clean.

Good food in the cafe bar quite big portions,

Yes you pay for the showers but 20p was adequate for a hot shower and plenty of time to wash.

Would strongly advise not to use the footpath as a cycle route to the tisserand trail but ask at reception for the road way.

Matlock is a lovely village and chatsworth is within reach.

Nice park for a picnic in ashbourne.

We had days out at trentham gardens and magna science museum. About an hour to get there but worth it.

Wish we could have stayed longer on the park as the kids made friends and it was a lovely site would definitely go back.

Only downside is the sudden downpours in the peak district but hey that's GB for you.

As someone has already said this site is like Marmite and unfortunately we definitely didn't like it!

It is very big, looks far more than the 150 pitches quoted. It was really busy, children everywhere on scooters and bikes and we felt like there was an accident waiting to happen the way they whizzed around the site. I am unsure as to how the pool passes any health and safety regulations especially with teenagers using the low wall around the pool as a diving board. The whole time my children were in the pool I felt sick.

Fortunately we had a pitch in the corner in one of the fields away from the pub area otherwise we would not have stayed. It was fairly quiet where we were.

There were always queues for the shower blocks and the washing up area, I am not sure why a site this big has so few of them. Paying 20p a shower is rubbish, we have never paid on any other site we have been to. They were ok, not particularly clean but bearable.

However, on a positive note the area is beautiful. We did the Tissington Trail and cycled to Ashbourne through the fab tunnel and we even heard the train! There are 4 bike lock ups at the leisure centre which we used and were great. We also went to Matlock and did the Heights of Abraham which we enjoyed.

We would definitely return to the area but choose a quieter, smaller site with no pub or entertainment!

I don't really know what to make of this site! I booked it because of the listed facilities and it was half way between home and another site that couldn't take us for a full two weeks.

The site lists that it has 150 pitches! I would suggest that they double or treble this estimate in the peak season! There were so many tents it looked like a refugee camp at first impressions.

On arrival, check in was very quick and organised. Lots of information supplied on places of local interest - Great! Then we went through the barrier, round the corner and there were kids everywhere!

We made it to our pitch without seriously injuring any of the children that kept dashing out on bikes, scooters, heelies etc and luckily we were tucked in a sunny corner away from the action and noise. If we had been on the main part of the site, we may very well have turned round and come home!

Once settled, we were able to take stock of everything. Yes - the site is clean and actually the pitches are large and well marked out. But there are 7 fields of caravans and tents! That is a lot of people!

There should be at least one stand pipe in every field - but there is only one serving three fields! And that was in a very muddy puddle! There was one portable cabin toilet facility serving three fields - again, not enough for the number of people using the site. It was however, always clean and well-stocked.

The facilities on the main part of the site were, again, clean and well-maintained. I didn't see any mould or mildew in the shower pods, but there just weren't enough of them! 12 showers for hundreds of campers! But the water was hot and the 4 minutes for 20p was adequate!

The swimming pool got very crowded most days and there were some very foolish children doing very dangerous things that could have had disastrous consequences! But our children enjoyed cooling off and having fun and staying safe.

The site shop is well stocked and reasonably priced. However they sell lots of inflatables for the pool (rings/tyres etc) which are then listed as not allowed in the pool area! Obviously nobody took any notice of that and the pool was full of them!

The play area is good - well fenced and well-maintained.

I think ultimately Callow Top is like marmite - you either love it or you don't. I am fairly sure that this is a site we will not come back to! It is too big, too noisy and just totally overwhelming!

Horrible. Noisy, very muddy, and so close to the neighbours. toilets and showers not cleaned properly and you have to pay for showers. bar area memorable only for rude staff. nothing at all appealing would not return despite the good location and access to Ashbourne. Lots of others were not happy either - will stick to the Club sites. Nothing more to say really. Picked it because of good feedback on this site but has also been said - like Marmite and we def did not like it
