We have just returned from 4 fantastic nights at Callow Top. This is our 2nd visit, but the first time with kids and they really enjoyed it.

We had 2 pitches side by side in Field 5. The pitches were huge and plenty of grass.

The middle of the field is kept open and gave the kids somewhere to play with their new friends whilst still in view.

The nearest toilet block was about a 1 minute walk away and the main area with washing up facilities, showers, and bar etc only another 30 seconds away.

The site was practically full but we never queued once for a toilet, sink or shower and they were kept very clean despite the number of people on site.

The swimming pools are great and the kids loved them and the playground was also very good.

All in all an excellent site which is clean, has great facilities and very friendly staff.

Just arrived back after a four day stay, it was only our second time camping and we loved it. The site is really clean and our pitch was spacious and not overlooked and the fields have loads of space for all kids to play which my son loved! Great park and entertainment, pub and shop reasonably priced. Great swimming pool but does get busy so need to watch the kids. Toilets and showers were kept really clean to say how busy it gets. Surrounding areas also fantastic dovedale and tissington trail well worth a visit. Staff friendly and helpful. Will definitely visit again.

My husband & I spent 3 nights at site we have stayed here previously & as before we had a great stay, all the staff were amazing the toilet & showers blocks were cleaned regularly the 20p for a shower is still the same which was a surprise as we had not been for a few years.

We had Sunday lunch in the pub that was great, the pool was clean & well maintained but none of the rules, no bombing, diving ect. Were enforced we saw more than one serious accident waiting to happen.

Pitches well looked after & the whole site was clean & tidy, the washing up area had plenty of hot water & again was cleaned regularly.

A great stay, great staff, will & have recommended it to others

I stayed here for one night and was a bit disappointed. It was quite expensive, at around ten pounds for a small tent. It does have allot of facilities but the toilets for example have seen better days. The pitch I was given was in poor condition, bumpy and over used. Several nearby looked in similar shape. Also showers out of action.

I suspect for some the general facilities etc. May be good, but my main priority was a good tent pouch and showers as on the bike. So not so good for me.

Came here for a relaxing break, but didn't get one. The campsite is well looked after but the quiet time rule is not enforced at all with people walking around at all times, teenagers shouting at 2am and small children screaming early morning. We know that this was a family site but there are limits, however the toilets are clean the food is good the staff very friendly. There is a very steep hill as you enter the site so be prepared to use low gear as there are no warnings. This site is just to large for its own good, we won't be coming back.

We have just returned from this site after a 'midweek' break [weds / thurs / fri]. We used to visit this site years ago and it was good then, a lot of development has been done since our last visit and it is now even better.

The pitches are so well thought out [all on the edge of the field so that no-one camps in the middle] and afford plenty of privacy & space. The grass is well cut.

We were kept amused most of the time by the antics of the almost tame rabbits and a mother pheasant & her chicks around our trailer tent.

The toilets & showers are quite simply the cleanest I've ever seen on any site.

We had a 'non electrical hook up pitch'. But TV reception was good [with our rather antiquated 12v TV & basic aerial].

We didn't try the 'on site pub'. But can thoroughly recommend 'The Horns' public house in Ashbourne

There is a amusement arcade for the 'kids'. Along with an excellent playground. The swimming pool looked good too [although we did'nt try it]

Put quite simply. This is the best site we have stayed on for a long time. We cant wait to go agan. And this time take our 3y. O. Granddaughter with us.

This was our first time at Callow Top. The approach to the site is up quite a steep hill. They have a queuing lane for new arrivals and a fast lane for people who already booked in. This was where it did not work in my opinion. Instead of queuing in an orderly manner, it became apparent that people were either abandoning their vehicles and walking up to reception, or their passengers were walking up to reception to book in. This caused us to suffer a 45 minute wait to book in.

Once inside we went to our pitch. The pitches are a good size. But we could not hammer or screw the pegs into the hard standing for the awning as the ground was to hard.

So after settling down, it was a bit noisy. It is a very large site, but surprisingly the noise settled down at about 1145pm.

Next morning and off to the showers, this was a real disappointment. There are clearly not enough showers on site for the amount of pitches that they have. Once inside we found the showers to be dirty, hair, grass and dirty floors. There were no mop buckets available to clean the shower with. Then after paying £65 for two nights, I found that I had to pay 20p for 4 minutes of hot water. This is a disgrace. Had it been a cheap pitch price, it would be acceptable.

The food at the pub was ok. The IPA was particularly good. Parents need to supervise their kids in the play area. We found a bit of bullying going on and bigger children throwing bark chippings at other kids.

Overall I was very disappointed with this site. They claim to be the best in Derbyshire, but Id hate to see the worst. I have stayed on sites that are much more impressive than this (see other reviews).

There are far too many children on cycles riding about.

And there are far too many dogs on site, The amount of barking and growling was infuriating. Just one dog barking set a dozen off. Its about time camp sites restricted the amount of dogs on camp sites. What ever happened to peace and quiet and sounds of the country, it sounded more like the Birmingham dogs home. What is it with Dog owners and campsites? Put your pets into kennels please.

I will not be returning to this site in a hurry. A lot of people are happy with it but, I have seen better and expect better with this price tag.

We have stayed here many times, I've lost count. I guess this is the best review you can give a site.

Why do we like it?

The site is appx 1 hour away from us and we use it for long weekends usually. The on site pub is great, good food and beer, and reasonable prices.

I like to walk my dog into town down the Tissington Trail, and grab a quick pint on one of the many decent pubs in Ashbourne, takes appx 1 hour round trip.

My boys (6&9) also love the site, decent play area and an outdoor swimming pool. The site feels safe and all the staff are friendly and helpful, makes a difference.

We also go here for Halloween, the kids do trick or treat around the decorated caravans on site, great safe and fun way to enjoy Halloween!

The site also has a Facebook page and they keep you up to date with the latest developments.

No negative stuff to report,

Enjoy your stay.

Have just visited Callow Top in April and was very happy with the facilities. When we booked we were a bit miffed about all the rules and regs and the fact that we had to put money in the slot for a shower but when we got there we realised that there were a lot of families with children and all this was necessary. Not a problem.

Lovely site only a short distance from the Tissington Trail and we could walk into Ashbourne via the trail. Nice large plots with high hedges for privacy. Very helpful staff but I would hate the job of cleaning the toilets and showers as some people left plenty of rubbish.

Would definitely not visit in AUGUST. !

On arrival at Callow top the playing field was an impressive size, and access onto the Tissington trail is only a short walk down the parks driveway.

On entering the park there is a great children's play area, a pub and café with a lawn area with plenty of picnic tables.

The pitches were somewhat of a let down, personally we prefer a bit of privacy and space, at Callow top I feel they have tried to cram as many pitches in as possible.

We took our 5 year old grandchild with us and she thoroughly enjoyed her stay meeting lots of new 'best friends'.

We wouldn't return, unless we were once again bringing our grandchild, even out of school holidays, as we prefer smaller sites with more space and privacy.

The facilities were okay, cleaned regularly but with so many children on the site it must be difficult to keep on top of the trails of toilet paper and wet floors left by them. We didn't use the showers on site but used the facilities in our Motorhome as there was queuing for the showers at busy times.

The staff regularly litter picked around the site and it is well maintained.

All in all not our favourite site in the area, but for families I can see the attraction.
