Just arrived back from Callow Top Holiday Park and had a great first touring experience. We went with our 2 children aged 10 and 18 months old. The facilities on site were brilliant for our older child, it was very secure and safe. The children's play area was not really suitable for an 18 month old as I found it to be more of a climbing park with no swings, which my youngest loves. The swimming pool was very clean but very busy but we did go during the afternoon once the sun had warmed up! The toilets/showers were very clean and cleaned on a regular basis. The pitches were spacious and hard standing the only criticism about the pitches is the limestone crush easily trod into the caravan. We ate in the cafe for breakfast on the first morning and found it to be a bit pricey. The lager at the Callow Inn on site was £3. 20 per pint and when you have a husband that drinks like a fish it soon adds up! Ashbourne is a nice walk away with a market on Saturday in the town. All in all a lovely site and will definitely return and recommend.

Just returned from a lovely week at Callow Top.
We looked for a site not far from Alton Towers which had a swimming pool and park to keep the children occupied and this seemed to have it all.
Cant really think of any negatives, everything was just great, very clean site with plenty of toilets and dish washing facilities. Good site for bikes and walking. We walked the Tissington trail into Ashbourne town to grab food and beers which was a lovely walk through a tunnel, kids loved it.
When we arrived the sun was out and all the seating area was full with families sitting having fun and listening to the live band which was outside. We were in field 2, pitch number 32 which was right in front of the field, pub and park, great pitch to keep an eye on the children.
Would definitely return not just for Alton Towers but for a great family holiday. Some lovely local towns to visit too.

We stayed at Callow Top Holiday Park during the Whitsun Bank Holiday in May as a family of 4 and 5 other families with children of various ages. It was our first visit to this site for everyone in our group and we hoped the previous reviews painted a fair reflection as to what to expect.
From the time of booking last year right through until the end of our stay I found staff very helpful and knowledgeable. Our request was to be pitched together, ideally in a corner location not too far from the children’s play area which is exactly what we got.
The site is accessed from the main road down a single track tarmac lane with passing places and an electronic gate which closes automatically late at night. However visitors can request an electronic pass if they expect to be out after the gate has shut. Grass areas had been well maintained and there is a designated sports field at the top of the drive.
As expected on a Bank Holiday weekend the site was full but there was still plenty of room for our children to play in the camping field. The busiest area was around the main central point where there is a shop, reception, lawn area for eating and drinking, swimming pool, toilets and showers (20p coin required for 4 minutes shower time), launderette, washing up area, amusement arcade, bike hire and playground. Children were running, riding scooters and bikes so extra care is required when driving through. The weather was good enough for the kids to enjoy the pool which was an unexpected bonus for them.
We took a walk into Ashbourne along the Tissington Trail which runs through the site along a disused railway line. It was a little tricky getting a pushchair up to the trail but once there it’s a relatively level walk into Ashbourne apart from a dip in one place and passing through a tunnel along the way.
The on site Bar / Diner had entertainment in the evening which went on until approximately 10:30pm, if you are planning to visit during a busy period and like early nights you may wish to ask for a quieter pitch away from the central position.
At the end of our stay we all said what a great site this is and would visit again some point in the future; there are many nice places to visit in this area. Our only criticism is that an additional shower block would help reduce the queues in the morning.

Just returned from a weekend here with the our 3 children and dog. The site is very commercial but professional and well run.
The site was ideal for the kids as there is a large playground, arcade area and pool. As others have said there are a lot of kids whizzing about on bikes and scooters but this didn't cause any problems. The playground area could do with being policed better by the wardens as although there is a sign stating it is only for smaller kids there were a lot of teenagers hanging about especially as it got later at night.
We were on the hard standing pitches in field 2 which is very close to the playground and pub so it was quite noisy but everything settled down around 10:30pm so it was no problem for us. It was a great spot to let the kids loose on the playground and we could keep an eye on them.
We ate in the pub itself on the first night, the food was very good and a nice pint. The following night we got a takeaway from the diner which was a little expensive for not very much.
The site is in a great location there are footpaths right from the site that you can take into Ashbourne or Thorpe which was great for walking the dog. The Tissington Trail also runs right past the site.
The toilets and showers were very clean and the site was very well kept. The shop is extremely well stocked.
All in all I wouldn't come here for a peaceful retreat but we will definitely return with the kids in the summer holidays.

Just back from a short break at callow top (11/4/13).
The site was immaculate and well set out. Staff were polite, got a nice smile from the cleaning lady every morning over at the toilet blocks, she seemed to be always around moping floors!
Site shop well stocked and fair priced.
The pub was undergoing some sort of work so cannot comment on it but the cafe bar was open and a pint of lager was £3.20 just the same as my local. The food was again fair priced and of good quality.
For the younger kids the outside play area looked as though it had recently been replaced.
While we were there the temp dipped which had everyone putting the heaters on, there were signs around asking not to run heaters for long as it could trip the whole site, but I must say I didn't see the sign until we were leaving and ours was on and we never had any problems at all.
We had a hard standing part serviced pitch which was level, needed a good hammer to knock the rock pegs in !
Overall well pleased and will go again.
Only negative thing - the hard standing material used seemed to get everywhere no matter how hard you tried to keep it out of your van it got in, even got in our car footwell too.
Will return but on grass.

Excellent site, have been coming here for over 10 years.
Our daughter loves the playground and arcade so keeps her amused.
Lots of walks to do directly off this campsite so ideal if you like walking or cycling(Tissington trail runs through the site).
Toilets & shower blocks were always clean.
We stayed at Easter when it was half price as otherwise its a bit expensive! I think they should bring their prices down as it's not always value for money especially if you are a family.
Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Bakewell is just up the road and certainly worth a visit. In Ashbourne itself you must try the local fish and chip shop, its amazing!
Highly recommended site.

Had a short break this week Callow Top Holiday Park, Buxton Road, Ashbourne this site was recommended to us by friend who visited last year.
Large site with pretty good facilities. The site was fairly busy and I guess will be packed in the summer as it has an outdoor swimming pool (not open yet). Staff very friendly and helpful. One thing to be aware of is the very steep hill/drive you have to go up to get to the site. Boy its steep, but when you get near the top some speed bumps have been added which is a real pain as the last thing you really want on a hill that steep is bumps designed to slow you down.
Great offer on at moment pitches are half price and if you link to weekends together you can keep the caravan on site for just £3 a day. So we are off there again next weekend.
On site pub is really great, the Callow Top IPA bear is very nice and food looks great but we didn't eat there this week but will next weekend.
Showers cost 20p and a little on the hot side but very clean, just one note about the toilet blocks the large loo role holder are fitted behind you as you sit and a little high so make sure you pull some loo roll down or off first.
Great time looking forward to next weekend already.

Our visit was low season/mid season, and the site was in good shape.
I did find the pitches on the smaller size even though they were of the hard standing design. And that brings up another note, the hard standing is really, really hard, some of my pegs bent and another caravanner could not get some of his screw pegs in without damage, so be warned.
The shop is well stocked, and it has a nice looking pool.
Going back to the site layout, it seems a bit cramped within field 2, as the horseshoe shape, has caravans/motorhome stationed in the middle island. If you have children you would have to take care with them as cars and bikes will be in front and to the rear of your caravan, so this is something you may need to talk to the staff about before booking.
On our visit there was quite a few dogs, and one pair were in the middle island and they barked at everything that moved, I think the site could do with a separate compound for dog owners and there is space on the other fields.
Walking access to Ashbourne is via a very steep hill and 2 styles before you reach the Tissington trail into Ashbourne.
Bikes to the Tissington Trail is via a very steep road, OK for going coming back well!.
Toilet and showers are Very Good, but you do pay 20p for 4 min and that's ok.
A nice site with Pub and a separate family room.
Games room, snooker and Tv room, Arcade with games. Swimming pool, Young children's safe play area
Would we go again, Well yes. It has everything, and if you have children. Bingo its there. And if you are just 2 Adults on abreak. You've got Real Ale in a cosy quite pub.

Just returned from a long weekend at Callow. Weather not great but this didn't stop us from having a great time.
Site is extremely well organised and immaculate. Litter pickers out daily.
If you have children this site is absolutely brilliant for them. The play area is good and the games room is great and open til 2230 every night.
There is a pub on site which brews it's own Ale (hubby very happy) and an on site cafe which was very competitively priced with quality food.
Site staff very friendly.
Bathroom facilities very good and very clean although the showers come at a 20p cost but very warm.
Site shop very well stocked.
Surrounding areas of the peak district are outstanding.
We intend to book again, this time for a week. There is also a special offer on in May and October for half priced pitches.
We were disappointed to leave after having a fabulous weekend.

Went to this site for the cycling and the dog facilities.
Pitches are fine but it is a large site and can get very busy with children. Facilities are average to OK.
We were disappointed that the pub / bar was not dog friendly and did not allow dogs. We will not go back because of this.
Also, very steep poor access to the Tissington trail, the worst one we have tried, again would not return for this reason.
A great family park for children.
