Well run family site with pool, arcade and play area. The hill up to the site is very steep - we saw a few cars needing help to tow caravans up especially in the wet! The touring sites are quite small but reasonably level, you can fit caravan, awning and car on but need to pitch quite accurately.
The showers/toilets are fairly good and cleaned each morning. Unfortunately by mid-day there was a fair covering of mud everywhere due to the awful weather. Our main moan about this site was the 20p for the showers, with a party of 5 quite a lot were used. The onsite pub is great, very oldy worlde and not available to under 18s in the main bar - nice and quiet. Ashbourne is about 2 miles away to walk and is down a steep hill from the back of the camp site.

We felt there were not enough signs around the site - the showers / laundry / washing up areas were not clearly marked.

A great site for families, it is well priced, but not suited for those who want a peaceful site.

Just to say a very family site.

We pitched our caravan and awning for a week for our parents and our granchild for a week. Weather very good.

Site amenities great for kids. We at one time thought we lost our grand child everyone very good looking for hime but low and behold he was 'at my mates caravan!' every child knows everyone very much for children. Do not go if you do not like kids.

The pool is great if the weather permits. The club house is good we only used it once but what a good idea, there was even entertainment at the weekend and this did not go on and on.

There is a slight incline into the site but go slow and all is well. We liked is so much we booked for the bonfire weekend in november and then there was only 10 pitches left!

Good site if you like a busy one with a pub and entertainment! This camp has expanded since our last visit a few years ago. We were in field 7! Big areas to pitch in but a very long walk to the toilets and even longer to the showers (costing 20p)! More facilities are needed. There are hair dryers in the toilet blocks and sockets to plug in straightners etc (costing 20p)
The small play area for children was always full, but lots of open areas in the fields for ball games etc. There is a free freezer for leaving your iceblocks but it becomes very full and you have to trust others. Good base for the surrounding attractions. Would recommend walking out the back of the site along the footpath across the fields, down to the Oakover Arms for good food and a warm welcome.

I don't want this to be another review extolling the virtues of this site, as I agree with most of what has been posted. I would like to point out some negatives, though:

1. We stayed in field 6. It is serviced by a single toilet block. A couple of showers would be a welcome addition.

2. Field 6 is serviced by only 1 water point, near the entrance to the field. A second water point at the other end would be positive.

3. The main pub (not the cafe bar) is only open at 7pm, and quickly fills up (good food though! Whoops, that's a positive!). It was also being refurbished at the time, so looked rather like a building site.

4. The kids' playground is in the main complex. An additional play area in field 6 or 7 would be welcome.

5. The shop only opens at 8.30am

The positives about Callow Top outweigh the negatives, though. As well as those already mentioned by the other reviewers, I also found: Access to the Tissington Trail is great. It's close enough to walk to Ashbourne (even with young kids!) The site is well drained (we had atrocious weather, and the only evidence the next day was occasional puddles). The pub served decent real ale (2 types)!

Stayed for 3 nights over weekend, site lovely and clean although very busy and quite loud at times, we were in field number 2, which is right next to play area and bar, although I must say noise stopped from bar at 11.P.M. Prompt and any noise on site was immediately dealt with. If you are going for the fishing please be aware that this should not really be advertised as on site, although it is on land owned by site. It is about 10 -15mins walk away, which was o.K. Going down to it but coming back up a 7% steep road, we felt like we needed oxygen and a lie down! Having said that we would definitely return again.

What a wonderful site! Went with my partner and 2 children (8 & 10).It was our very first ever trip out with the tourer we bought this summer.

The site was very clean and secure, we weren't frightened to let the kids wander off and play with the many kids that were there. They had to be supervised at the pool, but any responsible parent would, although there were quite a few irresponsible parents! The playground was excellent, the arcade was good some of the games you got 3 goes for a £1, so not extortionate.

Washing up areas and toilets were clean.

**Now for the showers, they were excellent! All I want to complain about is the people who complain about the 20p charge, I think its a great idea, I used the showers, you got 4 minutes of lovely hot water which was plenty of time for a really good wash. Just imagine if there was no charge and some greedy people went in the showers for half an hour? on such a busy site you would be queueing into the night.

**My last little point is the 'speed mountains', sorry I mean the speed humps, some people have mentioned the steep hill on arrival, but did they not hit the humps?, admitted they are needed as some people just drive round like loonies, but coming up to the barrier at the top of the hill there must be 6 in 200 yards all which contain the scrapes of the underside of many cars and caravans, so beware! 20mph is too fast.

we will be returning to this site as it is fab for both adults and children, but not for anyone who wants peace and quiet.

My family and I stayed for the weekend at Callow Top. This was our first trip as a family and I must say that we had a fantastic time! (Despite the weather).
The facilities are excellent, with something for everyone to do come rain or shine. The pitches are well marked out and generous, so no confusion over whether you are in the right spot or not. The outdoor pool is clean and well heated, the adults only section of the pub is a very good idea, and the family club house was large and very handy on a rainy Saturday night.
The only issue I have with Callow top is that you can't pre-book a weekend during the 6 weeks holidays, but I can understand why they do it, I am just disappointed that we couldn't visit again in August and have to go to a near by site which did not match up to Callow Top. I would recommend this site to anyone looking for a fun family weekend or even a week.

Just stayed here on our first camping holiday. It was recommended to us by friends. We booked a 3 night stay. On arrival the reception was very friendly and gave us a map and directions to our field which was no6 very easily found this.
All pitches are numbered and ours was at the far end of the field, plenty of space for our tent which is 25ft wide and sleeps 12 and space for car and table, barbacue etc.
The pool was clean but no lifeguard so bare that in mind, there are signs telling you under 15 have to be with an adult but there was lots of younger ones in the pool without supervision. Overall my children loved the pool.
Arnolds Bar served lovely meals we had a large pizza twice which was cheap and beautiful, got very busy around 6pm with families ordering food etc. The pub had family rooms but weren't up to much my girls aged 9-15 found it quite boring. Tables with umbrellas outside but these got full evening time. Playground was very nice.
Toilet block had 3 sinks and 4 toilets and was cleaned early morning so if you timed it wrong going with the kids for a wash you had to walk in to the main area to use the washing facilities but overall not to bad. My 15yr old used the shower block and found her shower not very clean so the rest of us gave it a miss.
Arcade not up to much really, a lot of the games didnt work but the ones that did my girls enjoyed.
Washing pots area was ok but got very busy at times and some guests left there sinks blocked and filthy for the next person.
Camp shop was well stocked of camping gear and food at reasonable prices.
Overall my 2 teenagers 14 n 15 didnt find much to do here but my 9 n 11yr olds thought it was fab. If possible if you are taking kids ask for a pitch near the toilet block as at 4 in the morning if you have a child needing the loo its a walk across the field when its cold and they are desperate.
Definitely come back to this site but cant see my older two going. If out of 10 I would give this site 8 out 10. Well worth a stay.

This site is huge and caters mainly for children. The toilets are very clean, but the showers are separate from the toilets and there's only a few in each block, we were in field 1 and we could see many people queuing for a shower. They are still 20p which is cheek really when you've already paid prices for high season.
We were very close to the pub which was good! my friend who came with us is a keen fisherman and went to the fishing lake which he said was a good place to fish and he would bring his tackle next time.
I can understand why previous reviews have mentioned the hill on approach, but it wasn't as bad as I expected. This site is definitely one for the kids so if you want a peaceful weekend ask for field 7 which is well away from the pub / playarea etc. Would return to this site again.
