Just got back from a very wet bank holiday at Callow top. The field was just about level and felt quite spacious - we were away with my brother who camped in his tent in the next pitch to ours. We've been to Callow Top before but have never seen it so busy. This time we were in Field 5 on a non electric hook-up pitch. We wanted an electric pitch but were told that if you aren't booking for the whole week in the school holidays, you can't have one; annoying really as there seemed to be a couple free, but these could have been reserved by people who looked at the weather forecast and decided not to go! However, I was still charged £22 per night for 2 adults, 2 kids and an awning - not cheap! Especially when you consider that the site has only 2 shower blocks of about 8 showers each, 1 small outdoor children's play area and a playing field that is on a massive slope. And they charge for the showers too! What a con! They have obviously developed some of the fields since we were there last but on the whole I don't think they can justify charging so much when there just don't seem enough facilities on offer relative to the number of pitches on site.

I have just come back from here. This was our first time camping and wanted to go somewhere with plenty of amenities and we were not disappointed. The shop was well stocked and reasonably priced, The pub was really homely and the food looked nice but we didn't eat there. We were on field 3 and it was so close to everything we were overjoyed. The toilet block was warm, water was hot everything flushed and lovely. Showers were 20p a go you couldn't adjust them but they were ok. For first timers and regulars as we will be going back this campsite is ideal could have asked anything more. We did the walk into ashborne over the fields and down through the tunnel which was great and then had a few lagers and got a taxi back which was £3 really reasonable. We had a superb time.

Overall a nice site. I stayed as part of a large group in field 2, which is quite close to the facilities. As mentioned before the location is a big plus point - you can easily walk onto the Tissington Trail and down into Ashbourne. There are some nice views around the campsite. The facilities are pretty good - the showers are nice, very hot, lots of water and places for your clothes etc. The toilets are also of a good standard. The pub is nice. I would prefer a bit more of a vegetarian choice but the staff are nice and it is homely. The swimming pool is very popular with families as are the pool and ping pong tables. The bar has a TV too. The shop is well stocked. The site has very strict rules on noise and is extremely quiet after 11pm. For me the site was a bit too busy as it is obviously very family orientated. It was perfect for our large group and great for any age children but I don't think I would be as keen as part of a couple or small group as I found it a bit commercialised for my taste.

Stayed here for a weekend. Think it is a really lovely site though, as we're new to the camping game, not got a lot to compare to. Myself and hubby took our 2 dogs - boxers - and stayed on field 6 which was really nice. Have stayed here before - only 1 night - but were in field 2 which although closer to pub and playground, the pitches were quite small and we only had a 4 berth tent. No problems with field 6 - loads of space and this time we had tent, car and trailer and still room for windbreaks to make it more private. Toilets and showers were very clean - no problems with lack of hot water or queuing like have read in other reviews, but we were up quite early. The pub and cafe were both nice. Could only go in to fetch a drink as, having the dogs, had to sit outside. Great pub garden though. Walked in to Ashbourne - great town. All in all, a lovely campsite and would go again.

A large and lively site which caters for all. The pool and games room etc are great to keep kids occupied and away from the adults who want some peace and quiet! The food on site was good and the pub was great. Facilities were fine - showers were spacious and hot and toilets and dish-washing facilities well maintained. On site shop was good and stocked a wide range of stuff. Staff were helpful, even though they were extremely busy. Well located for Ashbourne which offers a good range of shops, pubs and eateries. The Peak District is also a beautiful area for exploration. This site comes highly recommended!

Just come back from Callow top, as we'd booked for one of the 1/2 price pitch fees weekend. As this was our first weekend away in our new camper, we were unsure what to expect. Especially as after I'd booked it, I looked at the other reviews and people either loved it or hated it! First of all, we were in field 5 which is some distance away from 'Arnolds' and the Pub. It was relatively quiet here (although lets face it, if you really want peace and quiet this isn't really the site to come to!). The pitch was good with lots of space between units, with a handy toliet block. The showers were good for 20p, with hooks to hang your stuff up in there. The shop was well stocked. The staff were very helpful and seemed to go out of their way to help. Security seemed good (one guard stopped children riding around on their bikes after dark as they didn't have lights). Our Two year old loved the site. The best thing about Callow top is where it is. A footpath takes you out of field 6 across the fields onto the Tissington Trail, a short walk into Ashbourne . We walked with a baby carrier one day and then cycled with the mountain bikes and a child trailer the next. We got a chinese in from Ashbourne on the Friday (just on the right hand side of the market sq) which was nice but pricey (£4.50 for prawn toast anyone!). We cycled up to Tissington on the trail, turned right out of the trail and followed the signs to the tea rooms (Barretts wood farm, I think it was called). Huge cream scones for £2.00! Also went to a interesting restaurant called 'Carridge's' (an Italian Seafood specialist) near Hartington. All the other pubs nearer Ashbourne were booked up (so book in advance). Anyway, Carridges looked like an old train station with, Bizzarely what look like two recreated pullman carridges inside. Anyway, Great Food not as cheap as pub grub but then again we really didn't care as we'd stopped by four pubs before we got there! Nice service, and they didn't seem to mind about our two year old, which some 'adult' eating places do. Callow Top - We'd definitely go again, but we'd want field 5 /6 (as it was very noisy by the pub). Although at 18 quid for the weekend this was a bargain!

Stayed here for two nights at the end of April. This was our first time camping in our new tent and we loved it. We were really pleased with the site and its amenities. Toilet blocks and wash areas were kept clean. There is a pub on site but was not open until the evening and don't think kids were allowed in. However, there is a cafe/takeaway room with a bar inside and pool tables. Also outside the pub are plenty of tables to sit at which was great for enjoying a beer in the sun. Outdoor pool was great for the kids - even in April! There is a nice walk directly off the site which takes you into Ashbourne Town Centre. This a lovely walk which takes around 20 minutes - just long enough. The Town Centre is really nice with some good shops, pubs and a great little market. We stopped off at the Dog and Mott for a swift one before heading off back to camp. All in all, a great campsite with good amenities for families. Will be going again soon.

Very nice site - where there is plenty of room on one pitch. Was extremely busy on the Friday and Saturday but the maintenence of the shower and toilet block was up to a high standard. (also very warm in the toilet block which helped me to Thaw through after the cold snap on Friday night)! As it was our first time camping we found alot of people were extremely helpful and full of advice, apart from the three women and their gaggle of children that insisted on playing loud "dance" music out of their car - this was dealt with efficiently and they sheepishly turned down this when approached by a staff member and told to turn it down! Would recommend this site to campers who have young children as this site tends to be more geared towards this age group.

Not a bad site at all, the shower and toilet cleaners need medals, the site was full and they never stopped to maintain the standards. The pub is not very family friendly but looks like they are building an extension to overcome this. O and the food took 1 and a half hours.but it was pretty decent. We used the tissington trail on bikes which was fantastic, and walked dovedale another day.i lost weight and eat big camping brekkies aswell ! The site was very clean and has a good stocked shop.got the odd idiot teenagers as everywhere, sophie webster(well the actress who plays her) was there and the kids were following her about like a goddess.funny! Booking in also took 1 hour.

We visited this site on Easter weekend due to its location for the tissington trail, dove dale and chaps worth house. The pictes on the site where just the right size for use but we only had a 3 birth tent and a car. The toilet blocks are ok but there's no where to hang clothes when you are getting washed. The showers where good but there was no hot water on the Saturday evening will about 4:30ish and had to get a ice cold shower after a days walking which wasn't good. On Sundays the toilets blocks get very busy due the fact there clean them and there are closed from 8am. The bar meals where ok and value for money but, the beer. This site advertises Real Ale and a Brewery on site well there where no own brewed beers and the chose of either Bombardier and pedigree the they wasn't the best. I would defiantly recommend this site if you don't mind a bit of noise at night and a travel into Ashbourne at night to a little pub called the Green Man where the beer is better and the food too, I also recommend the Dog and partridge at Thorpe for beer and the steak is the best.
