Totally fantastic weekend. The facilities are all clean and welcoming. Having two pubs was a great added attraction. The staff are all very friendly and they are happy to help 24 hours a day. The food at the restaurant is great and the atmosphere relaxing. Having so many sites I thought that it would be really busy but the facilities are more than sufficient. Have booked another holiday already.
The only down point for me was having to find the twenty pence for the showers, although this system did mean that the showers never had a really long queues waiting.

Used this campsite several times in the past both as a camper and in a tourer. This trip was a disappointment, the minimal noise at all times was strictly policed and it became obvious immediately that other tourer owners don't like large families in their vicinity, having 5 kids 2 of which have special needs it was impossible to keep them quiet whilst understandably being exited for being on holiday. We left the site early, firmly under the impression, large families are only welcome on the tent fields

We have just stayed here and what a great site. It was very full not a single space to pitch if you just turned up (we booked in the week). We booked with friends and asked to be together but when we arrived we weren't we did ask to be moved and the lady on reception tried but couldn't find any spots to accommodate us.
The toilet block was very clean and showers were 20p for 4 minute also clean and hot.
The pool was great as it was a hot weekend and the kids loved it. The children's park was very well kept and equipped.
All the staff were helpful and very knowledgeable about the area and advised us were was good to eat (The bluebell inn) and they wasn't wrong. We had a great Sunday dinner with all the trimmings and plenty of vegetables it also had a little play area for the children.
The campsite also hire bikes with a good rate.
My husband ordered us 2 10 inch pizza's, 2 portions of chips and 2 pints and it came to £27 I thought this was quite expensive.
But overall a great site.

Just had week at this site. Pitches good size. Very clean. Walk into ashbourne from site. Plenty of walks for dog. Only 1 bad point the pub on site not open in the week but when open very good beer. Will be back later to site. 10 out of 10. Friends came and stopped in one of the cottages, very nice inside, plenty of room.

We were very much looking forward to visiting this site, having heard a lot about its facilities and location. We took advantage of the half price offer(otherwise we probably wouln't have gone), so we paid around £13 per night for an EHU pitch, two adults, one child and one infant, one car and one awning. That's an excellent price for the facilities available, even though neither the pub nor swimming pool were open when we visited (the cafe bar, shop and playground were all open). If we'd paid full price, the 20p charge for a four minute shower would have been rather galling.
The site is big and was fairly busy as it was the tail end of the Easter holidays - but, despite that, there was no queueing for toilets or showers and the standard was generally clean. The pitches are fairly small and regimented - our big-ish caravan, porch awning and car only just fitted into the space available - but being separated from our neighbours by a hedge was a bonus. The EHU was reliable and didn't trip at all, despite the weather being chilly at night.
The playpark is suitable for a wide range of ages, but could do with an enforced closing time at night and more parental supervision. There's also a playing field away from the pitches for children to play ball games, though this was largely unused during our stay. The shop was well stocked - but an 8. 30 opening is a bit late for early breakfasters :-)
Overall, the site is good, and we agree that we'd definitely go back using the half price deal - and yet. Neither of us really liked it (though the children were in heaven) - but we can't put our finger on why. The staff were friendly and helpful, but the site is festooned with rather dispiriting 'Thou shalt not. ' signs at every turn (though helpful signs for showers, toilets and water points were a bit more lacking). No visitors under any circumstances seems harsh. Access to the Tissington trail is half way down the very steep access road (which has ridiculously sharp speed bumps) and that access could do with some improvement and signage (I'm surprised that more info on the trail and the local area isn't given out automatically on arrival). There were lots of unsupervised children on bikes/scooters/roller skates racing round the site roads and I imagine in high season it would be mayhem. Overall, I think it's just too big and commercial a site for us, but I can understand why it is so popular.

Just spent 3 nights here on the first weekend of the season. Very clean site, excellent friendly staff, and very clean toilets and facilities. Just what you would expect on their opening day. Just a few points to make. There is an excellent pub/ restaurant on site and a brilliant bar with sky sports, which my husband loved what with it being super Sunday football. However we could not use these facilities as dogs are not allowed in either ! We therefore had to go into ashbourne to eat and drink and watch the football. Surely it would be better to keep the revenue on site ! Also there is no dog walk - so we are not quite sure why we were charged a fee for both dogs when there is nowhere for them to go. They should be free as nothing is provided for them. The site would benefit from an 'adult only' section as I did not appreciate my motor home bring used as a goal post. Nice walk into Ashbourne where the pubs are very friendly to both us and our dogs, although one way in has stiles to cross and the other way down the drive is very steep - but also pleasant. Overall nice site but not dog friendly.

We camped here 28 years ago and thought it would be nice to return in our motorhome. Not sure it was a good idea, the arrival area was a bit like I imagine arriving at the prison gates is. We were given a map showing our pitch and where to fill up with water. No lighting around the tap so filling up with water in the dark was no fun. Kids riding bikes round, screaming and shouting. By the time we pitched on our small pitch I wanted to go home! The facilities would have been good in a carry on film or hi di hi re-run. The showers were not really that good, hot water but not that clean and you had to pay for the experience. The best bit about the site is the footpath into Ashbourne. Lovely pub on site, adult only which was good but for some bizarre reason no dogs allowed? Seems strange when most people camping take a dog with them. We stayed during their half price period which made it bearable but wouldn't pay full price

We have just returned Home from Callow Top Campsite.
Good points :
The staff are great, really helpful.
The Bar and Pub are good, food great and prices reasonable.
Good sized pitch and drains well.
Bad points :
Showers dirty most of the time, no mop or squeedgy provided to clean with and 20p for 4 mins.
Other campers with no respect for others, their children run riot all day. Pushbikes and scooters rode dangerously everywhere. We seen loads of caravans not leaving on time and causing chaos.
Electric on the pitch is only 10amp. Tripped out everyday.
A real shame, good site let down by other selfish campers.
Unsure if we'd return, I mean £33+ per pitch and 20p for a dirty shower!

I booked this site in a bit of a rush as we suddenly had a couple of days free. I booked it because it has had consistently good reviews and won awards.
I suppose it all comes down to what you want from a camp-site. Yes, good facilities are something that I think everyone wants. However, our hearts sank when we turned up at the site - what's the point in being in such a wonderful part of the countryside if you're surrounded by high hedges and fences. The pitches were in long rows, consequently, it felt like being in a car park.
The other main gripe we had was just simply the number of rules and lists of things that you couldn't do - printed and displayed absolutely everywhere. I know there have to be site rules but it would also nice to be trusted!
The 'direct access to the Tissington trail' is stretching a point - it's quite a walk. I phoned before booking to specifically ask whether there was somewhere to walk the dogs easily from the site and yes there is - but only once you've walked for 20 minutes to get to the walk! (yes, of course, there were plenty of notices saying where and where not dogs could go!)
If you have a young family then I am sure this is a good site as there is a swimming pool and play area but if what you're looking for is a characterful, peaceful site where you can relax in some of the wonderful Peak District countryside, then this site is not for you.

Myself and friends stayed here for two nights at the beginning of August. I have mixed reviews about the site. Whilst we had a wonderful time and the site facilities were excellent the toilet/shower facilities were dirty and the site noisy.
We occupied two tent pitches next to each other on field 5. The tent pitches are spacious and well marked out. They occupy the perimeter allowing for the children to play in the middle which was excellent. It was very close to a toilet block in field 6 and only a few minutes to the main toilets and showers next to the cafe and playground. I think we were very lucky that our field was quite quiet. I observed field 7 in the evening and it was very rowdy. The site had a lot of teenagers around and during a quiet drink Sat outside the pub we had to tell a group to stop continuously swearing in front of our young children.
Although I previously mentioned the toilet/shower facilities were very dirty the rest of the site was well looked after. We were lucky enough to have fabulous weather and the children absolutely loved the swimming pool. It was spotlessly clean. The cafe was good and the food lovely with large portions. I thought the shop was well priced and the pub was reasonable too.
Overall it's a good site but I would be reluctant to revisit as I have visited quieter sites that have cleaner wash facilities.
