We were a group of 6 using the campsite for the first time.  One of our group was a first-time camper.  We all had an excellent stay and would rate the site 9/10.
We were in field six, probably at the furthest point from the toilets, pub, etc, but still not too far away.  The pitches were a very good size.  There was a massive grassed area in the centre of the field, ideal for gentle games, kite flying and general kid-safe playing.  Ground was firm, pegs all went in well and staying in too.  Good drainage all around.
Toilets were busy about half of the times I used them, but still did not have to wait for long.  Showers were excellent value - clean, very warm and powerful enough for 20p for 4 minutes.
We didn't use the shop but had a look around and it was well stocked.
Entertainment was good.  We stayed Wed and Thurs nights, so we had family disco and bingo laid on for us.  In addition, there was a pub on-site, which served beautiful home-cooked food.  While we had to wait 45 minutes for our food to arrive, it was well worth it and staff were very pleasant.
The general family atmosphere meant peaceful nights and quiet mornings - the best sleeping I've ever done whilst camping!
One thing I would change is the speed humps outside the camp on the way to the main road.  Yes, road safety is paramount, but my exhaust scraping the ground on the way out of camp each day almost spoilt it for me.  There must be an alternative solution.
Like I said, 9/10 and will probably be back.  Well done Callow Top!

Callow Top is only the second camp site we have visited so we don't have much to compare with.  Having said that we were impressed overall.

We were in field 7 which I expect only gets used in peak periods.   Our pitch was very spacious with lots of room around it.  The only down side of this field was the distance from the toilets, showers & washing up facilities.  It's not much fun carrying all your dirty washing up right across the other side of the campsite!  I think field 7 could have done with a toilet block at least.  Showers were fine although no sinks in them.

The kids were very impressed with the playground and the pool.

Not a site for those looking for peace and quiet but then we did visit in August didn't we!

This site was fantastic. The kids had the time of their lives. The play area was great and so was the outdoor pool. Their was not entertainment every night, but it was brilliant when it was. The d.j really involved the kids by playing games with them and putting prizes for the winners.
Only a five min walk to the beautiful town of Ashbourne.
Only one complaint and that was visitors are not allowed on site. My mum and dad came up for the day and they were not allowed in, even though they were willing to pay.
Despite this we will definitely be back.

 A superb family camp site.

I stopped in field 6 of 7. We have an 8 berth tunnel tent & had space to put up a large windbreak & put the car by the side of it. Pitch sizes are excellent.

Toilet blocks on Field 6 had approx 6 cubicles & the same amount of sinks which was plenty to do your morning wash & clean yer teeth !

The showers (a bit further afield from field 6 ) are truly excellent. 20p for 4 minutes. They are all individual units & they are soooo long. You get plenty of pegs to hang up spare clothes/towel etc & a shelf & a wooden seat . The temperature was spot on (just as well as no adjustment). Hot but not scalding. After washing myself I just stood there as they were so good. Wish my home shower was as good !

The pub was good and served Stella, Guinness, Strongbow & a couple of their own brewed real ales which although not brilliant were very well priced & drinkable. Also stock Newcastle Brown Ale which is always a plus point in my book. Prices on all beers are very reasonable.

The `club`house has 3 pool tables & a footy machine & a table tennis table & has 2 large wide screen TV`s either end. They have Sky Sports so I watched some of the Charity Shield when I arrived.

The shop is O.K - could do with a little more variety but again very reasonably priced.

The outdoor pools were cracking. A little one for the little ones & a bigger one for the big kids (and parents !). They are heated (just) so quite chilly when you first get in but o.k when you`ve been in a few seconds. My daughter loved it !

Has a very good kiddies play area which kept the kids entertained.

minus points :-

The entertainment as there`s not a lot of it. Could do with more.

The meals from the pub (which you can eat outside as there is a large green area with lots of benches with parasols) were a touch on the pricey side but on the plus side portions were good & it was very good quality.

Could do with more stand pipes so you can fill your water containers without such a trek.

Location is good as very close to Dovedale, Buxton,  Carsington Water & the Tissington Trail. Some truly stunning scenery right on your doorstep

I went for 3 nights which I found was ideal for this site as more may have been a little dull due to the lack of entertainment.

Would I go again ? Yes without a doubt - recommended

Visited Callow top, stayed for four nights, 2 adults and three children, price was very reasonable to say the school holidays have just started.
Went to this site due to the other reviews on here, but must admit that we were disappointed to say the least.
Firstly, the plus points.
The facilities in general are clean and tidy, the shop well stocked and not too expensive as normally found on sites. Swimming pool clean and well maintained. And the surrounding area is very nice for those that like the outdoors, especially Dovedale and Milldale (both gorgeous bits of countryside).

Now for the bits that disappointed.
For anyone pitched in field 6, the hike to the facilities was a bit too much, especially for those that have children, there is a toilet block, but it is located to the end of the field where the entrance to the rest of the site ( and the facilities ) are!
The play area is right next to the road, and also next to the bar (which attracts the gangs of foul mouthed chav teenagers).
Arnold's bar and cafe is apparently THE place for the type of family that think its acceptable to sit and drink all day whilst letting your kids run wild without consideration for anyone else on the site.

In short, this site is not for everyone. It seems to attract a certain type of family, and without being snobbish, this type is not for us. We like a drink and a laugh with the best of them, but not at the expense of listening to some of the sorts who were at Callow top.
We wont be visiting again, but only due to the type of clientele that come here, which is a shame because the facilities are acceptable and the location is really picturesque.

Just a brief stay at Callow Top (due to heavy rain fall)

Arrived Friday 13th, and was allocated pitch 666 (OMG!)

Pitched up and had a wander about. Toilet blocks clean and sweet smelling. Showers were coin operated 20p for about 4 minutes use. The water was very hot, take care with young children.

On site pub provided good beers and meals.Top Tip.The pub opens at 7pm and you can pre-book seating at reception. Our party contained 12 people so this pre-book option was used with great success. The food is good quality with one of the best Indian pub meals I've had anywhere.

Next door to the pub is a Cafe/bar that also does snacks, beers etc. Very popular with families as the kids can run in and out without any problems.

pitches are very big and the field we were in (6) was level with a huge central area for the kids to play in.

No problems with yobby behaviour.

The site has a security man on patrol all night.

Lots of things to see/do in the local area.

Big thumbs-up from me then.

Reviewer: Wegottrailertent 2 reviews from this member

Our first impressions on driving in the site was how busy it was and the lack of space in between units, it was quite cramped. We have a trailer tent and wanted electric hook up, it is worth knowing that all electric hook ups are hard standing and you need very hard rock pegs. The site do tell you this when you ring.
The staff  were really nice and polite. It would have been nice if  the shop was open longer hours although it was very well stocked. Don't forget your cash.the cash machine in there charges a fortune and there's no cash back facility.
The showers were modern, hot & clean, well worth 20p a go, long enough to shower but not to shave your legs !  no sinks in there which was a shame and you have to queue up in busy times unless you get there very early. There are only 2 hairdryers on site at 20p a go you don't get  long enough to blow wave your hair,  my self and other women all put 60p in.
The disco on Saturday night on the field outside the pub was great for the kids, there are not enough benches so every one took their own chairs.  It was fun, and we had no problem with noise after 11.pm. We have booked to go again in August which is more for the kids than us ! They loved it.
One thing I would say is I don't think groups of adults should be allowed in the pool. It just isn't big enough !  While we were there a group of about 5 very loud adults launching small balls at one another and slapping the water with foam toys caused havoc and spoilt it for all the kids, all this in the shallow end were little children were trying to  swim. Apart from this we had a good time. We visited Bakewell which is a beautiful town and would recommend to anyone. The take away was great ! Saves cooking.

We spent 2 nights at Callow top, the facilities were very good, showers very clean, comfortable & private only thing missing which would have made them great were sinks, no sinks in the showers, the toilets were great too & lots of them, very clean & well looked after.
The play area was well sited & a good size. Pool was great in open but very sheltered & has a great sitting area (which backs onto the pub!) for parents to watch the children having fun. The pub was lovely very old fashioned ( quaint!) did meals too but didn't get chance to try them as you have to book for Sunday lunch in the reception (which we had left it  too late) but plenty of places to have a very good meal in.
The surrounding area's were fantastic Callow Top was a great base for site seeing & the shopping centres in Ashbourne & Bakewell were very nice a great market too. Beware of the hills one in the town as you are arriving & the other actually in the site (very steep!) but if my car can pull our caravan up there anyone's can. Well Dressing (yes you are reading correctly) dressing up wells in certain area's we missed it but reading up on it should be an interesting day out.!
All the site staff were very friendly & helpful too. All in all this site is well worth a visit we found it very quiet even though it was the school holidays the trees around each caravan pitch is a nice cosy touch.

Visited this campsite during the May half-term.  Stopped in Field 5.  The pitches here were marked out and a very good size - we went with friends who had a 12-man tent with four pods and huge living area and they had loads of room to pitch, park their car next to it and room outside to eat.  Ground soft and flat, only one or 2 pegs hit stone when pitching.
This camp-site is large and lively.  My opinion is web-site is misleading as it gives now indication of how large it is - there are 7 fields full of tents / vans we were on pitch number 108 in Field 108 and we saw pitch number 601 in Field 6!
Shop was adequate although not that well stocked with food choice.  Had plenty of choice of wine though!
Play area was good and they're is also a field set aside for football/cricket which was great for the kids.
Toilets were always clean and never short of toilet roll.  No "cubicles" with just washbasins in though for a quick wash or to clean your teeth.  There was a bit of queue of an evening when people where using the toilet and having to wait to wash their hands because of people cleaning their teeth!  Showers cost 20p for approx 4 minutes, are hot straight away although there is no adjustment to temperature.  Room to hang clothes and get changed.  Considering number of people on the site, only had to queue once for a shower for about 10 minutes, did go at busy time though!  Was surprised at how little noise there was given the number of people there.  They do have entertainment on certain nights outside the pub which you can hear, but this quietens down at about 11 pm.  A security guard is on site and after 11 pm patrols and tells campers to keep the noise down if they are particularly rowdy (as happened in our field).
Could not fault the location, excellent for walking straight from the campsite to Ashbourne, Dovedale or the Tissington Trail.  We visited Chatsworth House just outside Bakewell which was spectacular - a little pricey £49 for a family ticket - but well worth it - would spend it again.
All in all, excellent location, good clean facilities but is a large site, noisy on some nights but noise is managed well.  May well be quieter out of school holiday time.
