My third visit to Callow Top and still very happy with it. This was my first visit out of school holidays and with just me and my 9yr old instead of the whole family.
Staff still as good from reception to the bar and food staff. Never fail to make friends as everyone chatty hence the reason I dared to go on my own without husband.
I still find the showers a bit of a let down. They are getting tatty and without a sink in the room you have to brush your teeth in the toilet block.
Bar, food, pool and playground still brilliant
We will visit again but now we have a touring caravan I will not be brave enough to tackle the entrance hill on my own !

Have just spent 2 nights at Callow Top and was very pleased. The toilet and shower blocks looked relatively new and were kept clean and tidy. Loved the shower cubicles / pods and they were reasonably priced at 20p for 4 minutes.
For those more conscious about the environment there was a good re-cycling area.
It's only a short walk / cycle to Ashbourne or about 3 miles in to Tissington Village.
You can easily jump on to the tissington trail from either the main drive way, to and from the site, or via a grass public foot path from field 6. But either way will involve 1 steep very.
There is a good play area for kids and an open field for football and cricket. I suspect the play area could get very busy and could possibly do with being expanded - as it is a very popular site.
Reception staff were very helpful and friendly
It's a little more pricey compared to other sites but on saying that, I'd be more than happy to go back and would happily recommend it to others.

Have just spent the weekend here, pitch size was good with hedges between each pitch so you had privacy. The children's play area was very secure. The showers were 20p for four minutes with plenty of hot water. The whole site is very clean and tidy, on the site they have a small supermarket which catered for food and even swim wear to camping gear. There is also a Inn and a cafe bar, which is what we used with having two young children in the party. With a good menu choice. The pool is a good size and the deepest end is 7ft 6inch only thing you need to be aware of is that it slopes down quite quickly and can be misleading if you think that you are not far from the shallow end, so you need to keep an eye on the little ones. There is a tiny toddler pool also. From the site you can walk into Ashbourne which is a 20 minute walk. Will certainly go back for a second visit.

We have visited Callow Top for the past few Mayday bank holiday weekends.
This year (2012) we decided to try somewhere else, our mistake, we will be back to Callow Top next year.
Callow top has a friendly atmosphere and great location.
The tissington trail is accessible without going on any roads other than the camps driveway meaning great cycling and walking for the family without the traffic dodging.
The trail gives easy access to Ashbourne which is a nice place to visit with shops etc to see.
Callow top has its own pub on site which has a lovely traditional feel and an on site club if you prefer something a little livelier with the kids.
The pool area is great but a little cool while we were visiting!
The showers are acceptable but I am not a fan of 20p slot showers although to be fair the time per coin is enough to have a good shower.
There is also a kids play area but ours is too old for that although the kids seem to enjoy it.
Decent size pitches are well laid out and the camping field is large and flat.
A nice site well worth a visit.

Staff were very friendly and always afforded service with a smile. Pitch sizes were very decent and close to facilities.
Toilets blocks were impeccable and cleaned regularly (lots of toilets, mirrors, hairdryer etc) better than some of your basic campsites. Has a small arcade on site for children and 1 pub and 1 cafe which both serve a good range of decent pub grub.
Campsite in good location for a variety of walks. The Tissington trail is right by the site. However I warn you it is quite possibly the most boring trek I have ever done. If you are into decent walks take a drive 5 minutes into Dovedale and trek around the lovely walks there.
All in all a very good site with great facilities which are a god send in poor weather. Perhaps slightly pricy on pitch price and the food served up. But what you would expect for the convenience. Would definitely return.

Just spent a weekend at Callow Top and won't be back. It's not entirely the campsites fault as we should have maybe done our research better.
I understand its a family site but I didn't expect it to be like butlins with kids running riot all and day and night, Saturday we had the joy of 20 'Grown' men (who should know better!) and kids playing football for 3 hrs shouting, swearing and generally been hooligans into the early evening, it got so bad that in the end we drove into Ashbourne for some peace and quiet!
We're only in our early thirties so its not like we're grumpy OAPs!
We chose callow top because the location was convenient, it was dog friendly and it had a 'Real ale' pub on site. However, as we brought 2 dogs rather than one (and foolishly told the guy on reception) the price went up by an extra £3?! How can you justify charging extra for 1 dog?? Then after pitching the tent in the rain and wanting to get warm and enjoy a drink we found the pub doesn't allow dogs in. This should be mentioned on the website somewhere then we wouldn't have come at all, we ended up walking into Ashbourne in the rain to find somewhere to warm up.
The boy on the gate was helpful and gave us directions to the Bowling Green Inn where we were warmly welcomed and even offered towels to dry the dogs which was lovely.
The site does have a swimming pool and a shop but we didn't use any of the facilities.
In camping terms this is one of the most expensive sites we've stayed at, yet the hand driers in the toilets were near to useless and there were no rubbish bins other than in the main area so we had to carry our rubbish through 2 fields?? Why not have bins near the toilet block? But my biggest bug bear is that you have to pay for a shower! theoretically I've just paid £40 for a square of grass and 3 trips to the toilet, its hardly good value!
If you want a 'towny' campsite with a sports bar, arcade, bingo and where your kids can run riot then this is the place for you. We definitely won't be back!

This was a last minute decision and we were not disappointed,
It's a well kept campsite with plenty of facilities. Great play area for kids and outdoor swimming pool for the high season
The weather wasn't great but we made the most of it,
We visited heights of abraham in matlock bath, had a great day there,
As there was only me and the wife we will be returning with our grandkids.

We visited this large site just after a sudden and heavy snow fall over the Easter break. Upon arrival we were given the newcomers run-down and Maps to the 9 field site.
Considering the weather we where pleased to be given a hard standing pitch surrounded by conifers, which left us well protected but with little view. I would recommend field 4 which was not as enclosed but still with hook up.
Two main shower blocks with plenty of space and if the block near the cafe is busy try the one near the entrance which doesn't get as much use.
Food was available on site at the Pub (with micro brewery) or cafe. Book for Sunday lunch early as it gets very busy Pub has adult only section if you wish to get away from the children.
Play area was very busy and if you are pitched near it allow for noise and kids on bikes. During summer months they also have an outside swimming pool.
A great place for the family not so good if you are looking for a little quiet but we enjoyed it.

We stayed at Callow Top over Easter and all in all had a lovely break. We were on the only tent EHU pitch which is a really good size, we fitted our Vango Maritsa 700, trailer and car on the pitch with ample room to spare so we didn't feel hemmed in at all.
It's in field 5 which has gorgeous views over the hills surrounding the camp site - in our opinion field 5 is the best one to be, for location and views (it's a mixture of hard standing and grass tent pitches) even when it's busy, which it was towards the end of our stay. Fields 4, 6 & 7 all looked like they had nice spacious tent (non EHU) pitches
We didn't like the look of the lower fields too much though, they seemed a bit cramped, with no views. And round the play park/pub area it was rather noisy with all the kids playing which is to be expected, but I wouldn't want to be pitched there. The play area was lovely by the way, but spoilt with kids who were too old/big at times.
The pub was lovely, and did the most gorgeous meals at reasonable prices, but the drinks aren't cheap. We didn't use the cafe bar so can't comment on that, but it looked pleasant enough.
The main toilet/shower block were mostly clean and warm with ample soap/ loo roll. Occasionally there were dirty toilets, but that's the fault of inconsiderate campers rather than the site!
The showers are accessed from the side of the toilet block, each one has it's own access door from outside. There were often queues for the showers but we were lucky, we only had to wait a few minutes. The showers themselves are lovely - very warm with an excellent flow rate - they cost 20p for 4 minutes which is ample time. The only problem with the shower rooms is that the tiled walls get very wet which means there's nowhere dry to hang your clothes!
There's a nice pot washing room with ample sinks and 2 large freezers which were free to use for anyone who needed them.
The shop is large and well stocked with food/camping stuff and the prices are reasonable.
We went for a walk to Ashbourne which was lovely - a 20 mins stroll mostly downhill on the way there, but a 30 mins steep climb in places on the way back!
Dovedale isn't far away, we did a lovely circular walk from Thorpe, which although hard going at times was more than worth it for the spectacular views! We also had a nice walk from Cromford Wharf along the canal. Bakewell and Monsal Head are other places we drove to.
The only downside to our stay (which is no fault of the site) is that we had to book for a minimum of 5 nights with it being a Bank Holiday and an EHU Pitch. We had to delay the start of our stay by 1 day because it was snowing heavily and blowing a gale, and then we chose to leave on the Sunday evening instead of the Monday morning as heavy rain was forecast. So it ended up costing us £125 for 3 nights for the 3 of us :-/
Overall it's a lovely well run and well looked after site in a stunning location - I will definitely be returning!

Our small holiday was nearly ruined by very poor customer service at this 'Holiday Park' and the facilities don't match up to the very high price we paid to stay.
After paying £29 a night (in April but not over the Easter Weekend), I was amazed that I then had to pay 20p for a 4 minute shower! The showers were cold and wet cubicles that opened straight onto the outside instead into a heated building.
The hard-standing pitch we were given was sloping and covered in a deep puddle at one end. It was made up of a mixture of chalk and gravel that turned into a messy paste in the rain. The grass beside it was sodden and muddy. Again, not what we were hoping for from the price.
There was broken glass in the children's play area, and groups of teenagers smoking there. We didn't see a single member of staff patrolling the facilities or make contact with customers.
Our pitch was right next to the facilities - toilets, washing-up rooms, games arcade and play area. Though there were advantages to this - our 6 year old son could play within our sight, we also had to put up with a great deal of noise until late in the evening. No one asked us when we booked whether this would suit, even though the site is enormous, with huge empty fields at this time of year.
The pitch we were allotted became the big issue of our stay:
When I called to book, I told the staff member I might want to add another day to my stay, and he said he would look for a pitch where this would be possible. At no point was I told when I should book my extra day. Needless to say, this didn't work out. When I went to pay for an extra day, I was told that another customer wanted our pitch and had paid for it so we had to move. My complaint was met with a complete lack of interest or compassion. The staff member actually said it my fault that I hadn't paid earlier, and no efforts were made by management to offer us any kind of compromise. To move to another pitch meant completely packing up, and made us very late for our pre-booked day out to Alton Towers.
|
Management response: I'm very sorry to hear that you feel that you received poor customer service during you stay with us. Good customer service is one of our top priorities and 'friendly and helpful staff' is the number 1 comment on the feedback forms that we receive back from our guests.
I am surprised that you were amazed at the 20p charge for the showers and the make up of the hardstanding pitches as you had stayed with us previously when both were exactly the same. In fact you gave us a 9 star review on this very website.
No broken glass was reported by any other guest or by the members of staff who carry out the play area inspections. Nor were there any complaints about teenagers smoking. Members of our ground staff are present on site all day and can be approached with any problems.
You booked your two night stay with us at the last minute, indeed it was because of a cancellation that we had availability. As your arrival day was Easter bank holiday Monday we were very busy. You did ask when you made the booking if there was a possibility of staying a third night. The member of reception staff said that he would put you on a pitch that was available for the third night at that time but you only actually booked and paid for 2 nights.
Our staff usually make it very clear that any nights not booked are subject to availability, especially during peak times such as school holidays. I'm very sorry if this was not the case or if some mis-understanding took place. However, I'm sure that during your stay you could see how busy our electric pitches were.
I'm also sorry that you weren't happy with your pitch. We did indeed have plenty of availability in our 'huge empty fields' but these pitches didn't have electric hook-up which is what you had booked. If you had come back and let our reception staff know that you'd like an alternative pitch they would have done their best to move you.
Unfortunately, after you had arrived, your pitch was booked from the Wednesday night by another guest. Their stay went over the following weekend and they had requested to be near the play area. When you came into reception on the Wednesday morning to try and book an additional night this was explained to you. Sadly it was not possible for us to move that booking as we were fully booked over the following weekend and had no other pitches near the play area available.
The member of reception staff that you spoke to found an alternative pitch for you, just a little further down the same row that you were staying on, so that it wouldn't be too far to move your campervan and drive away awning. You weren't willing to move pitches to enable you to stay an extra night.
I apologise, as I did when I spoke to you in reception, that you feel that our staff showed a complete lack of interest. I do however feel that our staff did their very best to help you. I have to mention that I was a little taken aback by the aggressive manner in which you were speaking to them.
