Just returned from a week after Bank holiday. A nice site but very tightly packed in. Just be aware of the BIG hill from the main road to the site , More than one outfit had to be towed up by the local farmer. Site was clean and well looked after. Ashbourne is a nice place plenty of local pubs and only a short walk from the site down the Tissington trail.

Great site for exploring the dales. Take your bikes and you wont regret it! Good facilities and great security. The cafe bar could do with more seating and a bit of a refurb and the onsite pub should be open all day. But these are little niggles. Will go back.

We spent a long weekend at Callow Top with our tent. Weather was damp and miserable but we still had a great time! Kids played on Adventure Playground (shame it is situated right next to access road) and spent a lot of time in the games room. The outdoor swimming pool was open and we all took a dip, then a mad dash around the campsite to get a hot shower! Staff are very helpful and the small shop is being replaced with a supermarket style shop. Loads of walks available direct from site. Evening entertainment was fantastic! Needless to say we went again in May and will back again for a week in August! Make sure you book early for bank holiday weekends!

Mixed feelings really. They allocated us a pitch in Field 2 (first field after the statics) right in the corner - only thing was it had no grass it was all mud/soil ! The same seemed to apply to the other few tent pitches in this field. The rest of it was hard standing for caravans. Yet in another field further up on the left was a completely grass covered field, unmarked pitches and only had one tent in it ! We had two small children with us and this would have been perfect as they could have run around and been safe - plus we would have had nice soft ground underneath us ! If we were there for longer than 3 nights we would have asked to be moved. Plus the night lights which run up the length of the field did not work/were not turned on (but were on in other fields) so you had to guess where your tent was ! Luckily it stayed dry so we didn't step in any puddles on the way !

I realise it is out of season but the shop was open between 9-10am and 4 -5pm - I turned up one morning at 9:15 to be told all newspapers had been sold - there was hardly anyone on site for the whole time we were there ! How many papers do they get daily ? The pub opened up on the Thursday which allowed us to get a drink and play in the outdoor play area with our children and mix with other families on site which was nice - although the service at the bar was very slow - god help you if you're there in peak season ! We also hired some bikes/trailer to go along the tissington trail which was nice - to get onto the trail itself was quite hard as the path up to it is uneven and very very steep - my wife had to push the trailer /bike while I pulled it ! Not a one man job. On the way back up the hill was even worse - I thought I was going to have a heart attack haha !

The staff were friendly enough and because it was quiet we were able to shower / use the toilets and then use the washing up room in peace and quiet which was good.

We would go back but we would ask for field 4 where it is all grass. I recommend you do the same - maybe they should make all of Field 2 hardstanding rather than have 4 or 5 pitches for tents ??

Just returned from Callow Top, this was a very clean and friendly site. Facilities were kept very clean and tidy, showers were great too.
Children could ride round on bikes also had a great park to play on. This site is very secure. There is a indoor area, with pool tables refreshments and bar for adults when raining. There also is a lovely pub on site which serves lovely hot meals and a nice relaxed atmosphere. Callow Top also has it's own swimming pool which is kept lovely and clean. If you forgot your bikes you can hire them here too.
Whilst we were there they had a vocalist that came in on bank holiday, and he was fantastic, can't wait to go again.

This was our first camping trip with our trailer tent. Callow Top is one of those sites to avoid if what you want from a campsite is peace and quiet!

Perhaps due to the presence of a bar and disco, it seems to attract a fair few of the sort of campers whose idea of a good weekend is to stay in the site all day drinking, then prove that they are having a good time by being raucous late into the evening, leaving their offspring aged from 5 to 18 to do as they please. As others have mentioned, this often consisted of hurtling round the site on bicycles with no lights in the dark and no sense of giving way to pedestrians. At times there were large crowds of teenagers hanging round the toilets.

We were in the furthest field but could still hear the music from the bar - I would hate to have been a caravanner sited nearer to the pub. This was a large field and we were near the entrance so it was not too far to walk to the toilets. Those at the far end of the field would have had quite a trek - it would seem like a good investment to put additional facilities in the more remote areas. This would also mean that people like us who want to avoid crowds would not have to run the gauntlet to visit the toilets.

The facilities, though clean, are insufficient for the numbers of people on the site, with the result that over the bank holiday there was nearly always a queue even for a wash basin, but notably for the showers, where you have to wait outside, and then pay 20p for the privilege. There is one hairdryer in each of the two ladies' toilet blocks which was also 20p and was in constant use.

We booked about a month in advance, but even so there were no pitches available with electric hook-ups. The reception staff were friendly and efficient.

There is a very nice Chinese restaurant in the main square in Ashbourne, but if you want a late shop, it's quite a trek. The nearest we found was a Spar at the BP garage on the edge of Wirksworth, although the Co-op in Ashbourne is open until 8. The shop on site closes at 5.

Just came back from a long weekend. What a lovely clean site. Set in beautiful surroundings. Very peaceful and relaxing. Liked the fact the actual camp was a good mile from the main road. With barriers to get in and out.

Showers/toilets etc were beatiful cleaned very regularly never ran out of soap or loo rolls. Good play area and amusements for the kids, and plenty room for the kids to play sports and ride bikes.

The pub served good food and the hubbie enjoyed the home made ales.

The only downside for us was the limited pub/snack bar refreshments.
That however has not stopped us from booking again in half term week.

This was a planned trip. There were four family groups. The men left halfway through the week to return to work whilst the women and children soaked up the sun by the very busy pool. Plenty for the children to do Playground, arcade, swimming pool, pool tables, entertainment 3 nights a week. A must is take the bikes, the Tisssington Trail is on the campsite once you have navigated down the very steep slope where we nearly lost two of the children. Ashbourne is a mile walk on the trail, where you go through a long tunnel with train sound effects.

Showers are 20p for 4 mins and were busy. There was plenty of cleaning going on including litter from camp fields. We were on feild 4 which was close to all the amenities. Cost was £15 night for two adults two children and a car. Only two drawbacks one the noise on the first night, curfew is no noise after 11 and second you have to vacate the pitch before 11am

Just returnen after a 1 weeks stay. We went with friends and were on field 2, pitches 32 & 33 (with hook-up) right opposite the playground, pub garden and with both blocks of toilet / shower close by. The position was handy has the kids could go on the swings themselves and when entertainment was on Sat/Saun & Wed night because the weather was good it was on the pub lawn so they could go and dance in eyes view.

The only downfall for the position was that all the older kids normally used the playground as a meeting place as it got dark so it could be a bit noisy - although we didn't mind too much as we didn't retire that early, but around 11.30 if there was still noise the night security would move them on and it would become deadly silent - until 7.30am when the kids kick in again - mind you who lyes in when ya camping - you're always up with the lark - especially when you have a dog thats needs to go out!!!!!

I couldn't praise the staff enough - although alot of the cleaning staff seems college age!! they did a brilliant job. The toilets and showers were clean just apart from maybe at lunch time when loads had had showers the floor became abit dirty (water and shoes and steam create a bit of mess) but they were then cleaned early afternoon and sparkling again.

Shop on site sells almost everything that you would need and is open 8am until 5pm most days.

Swimming pool was a bit chilly - kind of asked if the heating has broken - but thats just us adults moaning - kids didn't care that there teeth were chattering they just enjoyed it while it wasn't raining.

Anyway overall we enjoyed it and will come again - even though it only takes us 30 mins by car to get there was home!!!

Having just returned from Callow Top for a 4 night stay, I can say that I was impressed by the site.

We stayed in field 7, which is the furthest from the toilet / shower block. However, despite other reviewers complaining about the distance, I didn't think that a 2 minute walk was in any way excessive.

The facilities themselves were excellent, the showers and toilets were very clean and never overly busy even though the site was full on days.

The onsite pub and shop were excellent and the barn provided drinks all day as well as food and hot drinks. There is also Sky TV in here which was good for watching sport in the evenings.

My only grumbles about the site were to do with field 7 itself. It is very open to the elements and if it gets windy, you will feel it!! There is no protection from the wind and it whistles up the valley at a good spped. Our gazebo was broken by the wind on one day. Also Field 7, although lovely with lush grass on the top, was extremely stoney under the turf and was near impossible to drive pegs into. We were on pitch 650 in the middle of the field so i don't know if this is true all around the site, but certainly on these pitches getting pegs in was hard.

Overall a good site, friendly staff and excellent facilities. Oh and the surrounding area and views from the site are stunning. Loads of walks around the local area including the Tissington Trail which runs almost through the campsite.
