FANTASTIC***
One of the BEST ever campsites I have visited.
On arrival the reception people are lovely and told you exactly were your pitch was and toilets. Etc.
The pitch was a very good size with plenty of room to put up the tent with awning, space for two cars and space for my our toddler to play outside of the awning.
We was in field 3 which was a perfect distance from everything!
The park is brilliant, both my children(aged 9 & 2)loved it, plenty to keep them occupied and happy. The park is enclosed with a high fence so is nice and secure.
There is a games room for the older ones which is nice as Callow Top cater for all children's ages.
The swimming pool is amazing. Shallow pool for the little ones and a bigger pool for the bigger ones. This all backs onto the pub (easy access for a beer!). Looking at the photo's we took it looks like we are abroad! Pool area is very clean and well maintained.
The shop is very well stocked and has a variety of products that are all very reasonably priced.
There are plenty of toilets and showers which are clean and the showers are nice and hot. You have to pay 20p for a shower but it is worth it.
The food at Arnolds Bar is good value and very nice. The people serving are friendly and nice and helpful.
At around 10.30-11pm security walk round and ask for you to keep the noise to a minimum which is good when you have little one's asleep. It also makes you feel safe knowing that there is security on site.
Callow Top also allow BBQ#s and small fires as long as they are contained and so far off the ground. This is brilliant as the kids really enjoyed sitting round a little fire at night.
There was also a disco on Saturday night which was great. This is on the large grass area in front of the pub. Kept the kids entertained all night and gave us a nice break!
All in all a brilliant place to stay ***********
***Highly recommended***

Visited this site as the new owners of a trailer tent - upgraded from a plain, very old tent. We live locally and stayed 'just down the road' to test the new equipment in preparation for travels further afield.
We were in Field 5, a mixture of caravans and tents which we enjoyed. Ideal site for a 7 and 8 year old - we hardly saw them all weekend as they played on the playground, in the games room and on the football pitch. When they swam we had to supervise - obviously.
Playground got a little 'rough' and silly later in the evening (7.30-ish) with water pistols and coke being poured down the slide and 'bigger boys' so we kept them close at hand. Toilets were always clean and had paper. My husband joined us from work on the Friday and we had to pay for the second car even though it only took up room on our allocated spot - which was more than adequate in size - which we thought a bit OTT given the charges.
Agree that a play area for little ones would be good but overall the kids loved it and we would go back.

Just got back from a weekend here with 3 adults 3 kids under 5 & a dog. Had a good time. 1st time for 2 of kids but they enjoyed it. Playground was a liitle busy for them think it needs a area for the little ones.
We were on field 7 which is the end field so had a fair walk to toilet block.
Food was good from Arnolds bar. Site a little noisy after 11pm.
It needs more toilets & dog poo bin. Great walks for dog along the Tissington Trail.
We will be going back again.

We visited this site last week. Found the site to be clean and tidy the staff were very friendly. The adventure play ground and the arcades were a big hit with the children. We stayed in field 4 and it was lovely to see lots of room for the children to play ball games the children made lots of friends.
Found the showers a little misleading as we was told dont need to pay for them but you do its 20p for 4 mins I feel this is a little unfair for the cost that we paid for the holiday this is the first campsite were we have stayed and had to pay for showers. Basicially the site runs on 20p showers, hairdryer, plug in one of the ladies toilets. So arm yourself with 20p if you visit as they are scarce. Arnolds bar served great food and football was on there was bingo but we didnt go to that.
In all a good site may visit again if want to back to Ashbourne.

Just spent the last 4 days at Callow Top over the final bank holiday in May.
Check in was swift and efficient, clear directions were given to our Field 6 pitch.
What's on site?
Pub, Arnolds Family cafe/bar, good sized shop, swimming pool, play ground and offsite football pitch, in other words everything an 11 and 7 year old would want.
Service was very good in all venue's and all the staff were helpful.
Just remember to bring a stash of 20p's as the showers and the hair dryers need to be fed.
Would I Go Back and Recommend to Friends?
Yes - Good site for families, a base to explore the Peak district and 20 minutes from Alton Towers.
If you want a less Family hi-activity site and just want to relax, not for you.

Great family site lots for the kids to do , I liked having a pub nearby and the food wasn't bad, a bit noisy at times when your trying to relax so don't go for peace and quiet. I'd definitely go again although I prefer un metered showers.

This site is perfect for families. We stayed in field 6, the toilets were always clean and the pitches are really big. Theres a big area in the middle for kids to play and they really loved it. The Pub is lovely, the play area is great, the pool is perfect, the shop sells a little of everything and the staff are really helpful. We have just booked again for june. The only thing I feel that could be improved is the lack of dog waste bins, we only saw one and it was overflowing. Theres a security guard that patrols the grounds which is great but he has a fierce looking guard dog which perhaps is a little over the top and a bit scary. Theres an excellent chip shop in Ashbourne that does the nicest battered cod Ive tasted in a long time, and the campsite also does really good food. This place is perfect :-) really cant wait to go again.

Spent 3 very warm days last weekend 09/05/08 at this campsite. We had a lovely time. Arrived on the Friday noon time and pitched up on field 6, very well set out and nice view of the countryside. There is a pub on site, large shop, swimming pool, and most amenities you would expect on a modern site. Overall we rate Callow Top and would definitely go back again.

We arrived here on a Friday evening of a normal weekend. We knew it was going to be busy as the weather was good.
Reception was well organised and helpful, however nobody helped you by showing you where your pitch was. We were on field two and although the pitches were fairly spacious, those people with awnings up and large vehicles didn't have enough room to park the car at the side and left them half blocking the roadway.
As we were waiting to pull onto our pitch a stray football from the adventure playground (where allegedly no ball games were allowed) hit our car.
The facilities are good and reasonably priced, the shop was busy but sold a little of just about everything you could have forgotten. The pub was excellent inside as it was fairly quiet but outside on the lawn was very rowdy. The kids playground is right next door to the pub which is handy for adults to keep an eye on playing children, however the noise from the playground went on until way after 11pm and after the pub had shut.
The showers were clean and the water was hot, not the best I've ever been into but certainly not the worst, although don't forget to take your 20p in as there is a charge for them.
We can't comment on the pool although it was well used by the kids that were there, and we also can't comment on the food or service of it as we didn't eat there at all.
I must say that we have never been to a site that had so many dogs (and their mess) on it! I love dogs but would not take a dog on a site if it had a habit of barking at everything that moved, which it seemed a lot did. Barking dogs and screaming kids were the norm on this site.
The site is a twenty minute walk from Ashbourne down the Tissington trail (accessed from the site). Ashbourne is a typical derbyshire market town, very pretty and lots of little shops and side streets to explore.
The site as a whole is not bad, but there seems to be an abundance of rules, more than I have ever seen at a site, but no one pays any attention to them at all. The noise rule is disregarded almost everywhere and there is a rule of no visitors allowed to site which was also disregarded. Don't get me wrong I'm not a fan of rules for the sake of it but I think if they are in place for a reason then they should be enforced.
We would visit this site again simply because it is an ideal distance for a weekend break for us and we like Ashbourne, but would ask to be situated as far away from the facilities as possible!

A truly great site for families with kids (including younger teenagers). There is a true family atmosphere with most people seeming to be very decent and friendly. I took two 11 year old girls for a weekend and they loved every minute, spending most of their time looking after little ones in the paddling pool or splashing around in the larger heated pool. At night, activity focuses around the front of the pub and club, where parents can keep an eye on the busy playground whilst enjoying a drink.
The onsite pub is very nicely done and has the civilised atmosphere of a good country inn. Children aren't allowed in the bars as there are separate family rooms. The home brewed beer is interesting if real ale is your thing.
The only criticisms? Could do with more water points. Also, the next time I use this site I'll bring my campervan as the tent field 6 was noisy at night, with police arriving on Saturday night to sort out a row between two noisy families! Not the fault of the campsite I know, but you don't get this with Caravan Club sites.
Would I visit again? With the family definitely yes, as a couple after a quiet break, no.
