Stayed here when all pitches were half price due to the autumn lul and really wondered what all the fuss is about regarding this site. It needs serious money investing to bring pitches, which are far too close together, up to a better standard. Showers and toilets are dated and 20p for a 4 minute shower in this day and age should be inclusive in the pitch fee.
The location is isolated well off the beaten track, the pub on site was closed and is only open in high season. The bar and eating area was open but during a four night stay we didn't see anyone near it. The shop looks to carry a selection of everyday needs but we never used it. Staff were friendly.
The site is close to Ashbourne which has everything you could need the surrounding area is pretty and this is one of many campsites locally but sizewise is the largest by far, I don't think another stay is a possibility, there is no doubt that in high season this site is overpriced.
If you have children then there is quite a lot to keep them amused and of course its no where near a main road

Had a wet weekend at Callow Top Holiday Park, Ashbourne, Derbyshire. The site made it a good weekend. FAMILY :2 adults children 14, 10, 7.
Shop on site - not the usual overpriced rip off stuff and stuff a camper would actually need.
Pub - very friendly atmosphere
Restaurant Area - Does take away! Blumin brilliant idea, buy the time we'd finished setting up last thing I wanted to do was cook but wanted to eat outdoors, pizza and chips a great take away. They do a good fried breakfast too.
Park - its small and full of children but that's what parks are.
Outdoor pool - as mentioned it rained but we used this anyway, it is heated but you only notice that when you get out into the cold. It could use some lockers or a place to put belongings.
Toilets - 2 loo roll spindles so that they never run out, a fab idea and clean and basic.
Showers - 20p for 4 minutes, the problem here is that there isn't anywhere to put dry clothes and getting changed on the wet floor especially with children is problematic, perhaps put in a baby changing station idea ( a table that folds up and down)
Pitches - fairly close together, we had space on the field in front of us but I can imagine at busy times you lose this. There were some loud families who smashed beer bottles and had loud music, the next day the family weren't there so I assume they were removed. I would say the 11pm rule isn't overly enforced but by midnight everyone was quiet.
Area: Its appears in the middle of nowhere but you are a short walk from Ashbourne village and there are lots of pubs and restaurants near by. Further out you have Monkey Forest, indoor crazy golf, Poole Caverns, Otter Sanctuary, Go Ape, Blue John Cavern, Alton Towers, Bakewell and Buxton.
We didn't use the fishery, so cant comment. We found the people at reception very helpful and they were lending jump leads to a family.
We are already looking to return in 2 weeks. We loved it. Highly recommend.

Our all time favourite site, nice and clean facilities, friendly staff and spacious pitches, only downfall no ehu for tents. Kids love the swimming pool and playpark, nice café and restaurant that does a variety of meals.

Our family of 5 stayed here over May half-term & had a fantastic time. The site was very busy due to the school hols & nice weather. But in spite of this we never had a queue for a shower, wash-up or toilet cubicle. All facilities were spotless & well maintained. The showers were always hot too. I was a little apprehensive of the 20p for 4 minute shower. However it was surprising just how long those 4 minutes felt!
A down-side for us was the cafe-bar & play area were over-run with unsupervised children & after 6pm seemed to get particularly roudy. However, we mostly stuck to our field so it didn't bother us too much.
The location of the site was lovely. We walked down to Ashbourne one day which took about 25 minutes, and cycled to Tissington along the trail which was especially beautiful.
We will definitely return to Callow Top again in the future.

We stayed here over a weekend from Friday to Sunday.
First the positives. It's a pretty location well off the main road and great for the Tissington Trail which was the primary purpose for our visit. We cycled one day and walked along the trail into Ashbourne the next. On arrival the staff were very friendly and helpful and as it was low season said we could stay until 4pm on the Sunday.
Unfortunately now for the negatives. Our pitch was more of a 'wedge' and the hard standing was barely wide enough to take the motor home. It was situated alongside the main thoroughfare through the site to the camping fields. The number of unaccompanied children wandering around was staggering. They cycled, ran, scootered and wandered noisily backwards and forwards constantly. Despite it being a main thoroughfare they even played football. Other ball games were also being played near 'vans and motor homes. The noise level was impressive for all the wrong reasons although it did quieten down after 11pm. The only visible presence of site staff (not including the gate keeper!) was one chap in a high viz jacket who we saw walk by once each evening.
The motor home grey waste disposal is not fit for purpose.
This site is fantastic for families and it's obvious they were having a great time. It's a fairly safe environment apart vehicles travelling at considerably more than the 5mph speed limit which seemed to be normal procedure.
As a couple who like a quiet life we decided weekends here are not for us. However as we value the site location we would return during mid-week out of school holidays.

Stopped here for initially 5 days but left after 4. The park was like a council estate. There were kids running around your car and caravan if not running then on bikes. My car got hit 2 wing mirror cracked and a 4 ft scrape down the drivers side. Parents of the child said basically prove it and the site wanted nothing to do with it saying you park there on your own risk. The pub on site is very expensive and the food is well it's basic pub food all your favourite frozen rubbish. The toilet facilities are basic but clean with the toilet roll dispensers being on the wall behind you ??????. The showers are accesses able straight from outside so if it's raining you trapes all the crap from outside into the shower cubicle. Not a very bright idea really. The shop on site is so ridiculously expensive it's borderline a joke. A lot of the items for sale have a RRP printed on them and the shop is trying to charge you in some cases a £1 on top of it. Not a cheap site and not worth the money. If you could park your car near your caravan then that would levitate one of the issues. I will not be returning back there again

I have just spent four nights at this campsite, never again.
There were unsupervised children as young as five riding their bikes around and abandoning them in the road while they played in the park. Parents seem to have completely ignored the signs to say that they should be supervised and abandoned them in favour of the pub.
Fireworks were going off, without warning, on two of the nights and our dogs were terrified. At two O'clock on Sunday morning a group of people decided to go round setting car alarms off.
At the back of us someone left a car engine running all day as a sort of make shift generator and was never approached to turn it off.
The toilets we warm but usually full of people washing in the sinks to avoid the 20p charge for showers. The showers were cold because the children thought it was funny to open all the doors.
The surrounding area was beautiful with plenty of places to visit and things to do.

This is the review I wish I read before going.
The positives first.
The staff were really friendly and helpful, the pool was good and food we had in the club house was surprisingly good. The facilities were clean and tidy and the site seemed really well run.
The main thing that let the site down was the size of the pitch. We are a family of 6 and came in a motorhome and paid extra to bring a pup tent and extra car, the pitch was so tight I had to ask the family opposite to move their car to park the motorhome, our guy ropes were in a hedge and I struggled to get the car in and out all week. Our pitch was in a tight row with a road directly in front and pitches just as tightly packed on the other side. There was nowhere for young children to play with a ball etc in sight of the van and the playground was packed with teenagers most of the time. We had a lot of rain the week we were here and the pitch was one huge puddle for half the week. You also had to pay for the showers which were no better than average, only 20p but its the hassle of finding enough 20p's all week. Although the site was well run it packed far to many people in and the facilities that were actually good were rammed with people. We spent as little time on the site as possible and wished we had chosen a better site to explore this area which was a great place to visit. To be fair I think a quieter time of the year this would have been a different review

Stayed at this site early August when the weather was fantastic. We really couldn't of asked for better. the site is exceptionally clean, friendly helpful staff. Pub on site is great, cafe bar good and the pool is an added bonus. Everything is there so you don't even have to go off site. My only bug bear is that there is a no noise policy from 11pm and as your in a tent your voice carries, I personally think 11pm is quite early to be sent to bed, although when children are running around playing and crying around 7am in the morning perhaps it was just as well they have a warden to tuck you in bed and make sure you don't make a sound. Lol

Absolutely fantastic site! Stayed in may and the went back in July as we enjoyed it so much. Facilities are brilliant, site is very clean and well looked after, staff in the shop, cafe and reception are polite and helpful.
Noise levels are kept to a minimum after 11 which is great if you have younger children, loads to see and do in surrounding areas. I cannot recommend this site enough, prices may seem a little steep in comparison to some but you really do get what you pay for. Already planning a return trip for next year.
