We have visited Callow Top twice this year. We will not be going back.

Overall its okay, there is a good play park for the kids and there is a well stocked onsite shop for those essentials. Easy access to the Tissington Trail.

We did find the site very noisy so wouldn't recommend coming here if you want peace and quiet. We have two young children, but the noise was more from adults.

The main moan is the caravan pitches at Callow Top, they are crammed in like sardines. Many people were complaining about this when we were there.

The showers are clean but, even though there were radiators which didn't work, the shower blocks were very cold. The showers themselves are nice and hot.

The toilets were dirty, the floors were filthy (and it wasn't raining) and the toilets always full of waste ! ;-( I agree this is down to the people using them but staff should be checking the facilities.

I would agree with most reviews on here that this is a good family site that is well laid out and has enviable views across the Derbyshire countryside. The on site pub was warm and inviting with open fires and excellent beers brewed on site and good food but with a limited menu. The shop was reasonably priced for such a captive audience and the cafe not only provided food but entertainment in the form of pool tables and Sky TV.
The site has direct access to the Tissington trail giving ample exercise for dogs and their owners a like.

Visitors should be aware that the access road is very steep and at the time of visiting was covered in leaves leaving at one visitor requiring assistance to tow his unit on to site. We also found several roads on site were covered with wet leaves making them a little slippy in the wet weather.

At £21 per night normal rate for 2 people in a unit I would have expected to find the showers free and the shower rooms heated particularly in late October with a frost.

Our first experience of a Holiday Park, after a lifetime of choosing farmer's fields with basic facilities. We chose it because the weather forecast was poor and we wanted guaranteed entertainment for our three year old boy.

It didn't disappoint. The pool was lovely. The child's play area was top quality. The outside seating area for the on-site pub is right next to the play area so you can watch your children as you enjoy a pint of real ale and they play. There was also a disco - which our boy loved. He was in seventh heaven.

However - it was incredibly noisy. This is not the place to go and relax. Other people's children were allowed to run around til nearly midnight in some cases, and it was hard for us to get our boy off to sleep. However, the upside of that is that when our child couldn't sleep, we took him off to the pub. No one batted an eyelid, with all the other kids around. The place is extremely child-friendly.

Toilet blocks etc are top notch. The on-site shop was amazing !

This site is very clean, safe for children and well set out, with beautiful views of the surrounding area.

The showers are hot and clean and cost 20p for approx 4 minutes, which we found about right.

We had Sunday lunch at the pub which was very tasty and the portions were more than enough for me, even the OH struggled!

The shop has a good selection of things and is reasonably priced.

There are seven fields I think, which are well proportioned and clearly marked so you are not too close to the next pitch. Some of the fields with EHU for caravans have lovely privet hedges between the pitches which looked really nice although we didn't have a closer look.

It was a brilliant weekend weather wise and we really enjoyed sitting on the 'village green' area outside the pub.

The only minor downside, and it really isn't a issue, is that although they welcome dogs onsite you can't, understandably, take them into the pub or the cafe bar. I appreciate that it is serving food in these outlets, but if it was raining there isn't anywhere that you can eat if you have dogs.

The walk into Ashbourne holds some lovely views and is very pleasant - although the journey back up the hill killed my calves!

The staff work so hard and are really helpful, they even said on check-in that we didn't have to rush to leave as our pitch wasn't booked for that day. We will definitely be returning here again as it is the best site we've visited so far! Well done to everyone at Callow Top.

I just wanted to let you know what we thought of your campsite on our stay this year in June for 4 nights.

Me and my wife stayed in a tent with our toddler and baby. We have been to many campsites and this was the best one yet! The facilities were excellent, the toilets and showers were very clean. The pub restaurant had an excellent service and catering and was most child friendly.

The playpark was great for the children as was the security and play area on the fields where the tents were pitched.

The 30 minute walk to the town of Ashbourne is a beautiful walk, all down hill, but a bit more hard work walking back but there is a brilliant pub sat at the top of the hill on the way back! Well worth the effort!

The staff at the campsite are so friendly and very helpful.

We will definitely be returning to this excellently run campsite.

Callow top is a large, very well organised campsite in a very nice place, just five minutes away from Ashbourne town centre and literally on the Tissington trail. We (me, wife, 10, 9 and 1 year old) stayed here for our first camping trip in July and enjoyed it so much that we returned the following week!
There are no EHU's for tents, which is a shame, but the pitches are plenty big enough and well laid out so that there is a large play area in the middle of the fields, which is great for football, tennis etc.

The showers were 20p, they were always clean and hot and there are plenty of them and the toilets were always clean too. There are facilities for dish washing, laundry and freezer blocks.

The on site shop stocks most things you could ask for and is reasonably priced.

There is a pub with very nice beer garden and a clubhouse in the middle of the site which both serve good food and drink.

For kids there is an adventure playground with slides and climbing frames, a football pitch, volleyball nets, there are pool tables, table tennis, arcade games and there is a very nice outdoor heated swimming pool. The pool and play areas get very busy and rowdy though so beware! We all absolutely loved Callow top and cant wait to return next year.

Stayed here for first camping trip after reading review on UKCampsite. The site was easy to find and for first timers was better than we expected.

Pitch good size, playarea good if a little busy with older kids (our youngest is 3 so a bit too boisterous for him) Indoor play same as above

Toilets cleaned regularly but always when we needed to them! Dish washing facilities good and clean. Shower 20p but clean and hot, too hot really felt like steam room.Very sticky whilst trying to shower kids

Pool too cold for all but very hardy (hubby and kids lasted 20mins)

Take away good value and portions

Overall good Will use again

Spent 3 nights here on our first ever camping trip. Booking in was easy as was finding our pitch (field 6) had a lovely corner plot with lots of space. Toilets always clean despite the weather being very wet and the fields terribly muddy. Shower's lovely and warm and I did not object to paying 20p for them. Also good was the fact that the toilets had hairdryers (again 20p) or sockets for your own. Great that they had the laundry especially as our bedding got wet! Washing up area again always clean.

Didn't use the pool because of the weather, but that didn't seem to stop others. Play area's and arcade always crowded, do didn't use these. Camp shop well stocked.

Lovely walks and nearby Dovedale was superb.

We stayed for one week in field 4. Great quiet field near to the action !. Our 3rd visit in 2 years.

Extemely well organised. On arrival you are given a map of the site with your pitch highlighted. A pass for your car and a menu for the cafe ! Excellent.

Excellent childrens entertainment, think Butlins with canvas. Arcade was cheap ! always a bonus.

Fabulous showers, hot and roomy.

Great walks into Ashbourne.

My only suggestions would be .

To move the pitches over by half a pitch. Pitching on earth/mud isn't pleasant. It would give the grass a chance to recover.

And a family bathroom with a bath.

On the plus side, in the tent fields, you pitch around the edges only. This leaves huge areas for children to play safely. Brilliant.

Great base for sightseeing however this site is very busy rather like Butlins, the toilets are cleaned at strange times (9.00am) and are not enough for the huge amount of tents that are on this site.

It was noisy on a morning and at night however the 11 o'clock guide time was generally adhered to.

The pitches are flat and size wise ok.

The play area was quite good but so many kids our little girl could not get on it, the same with the swimming pool but that was clean and killed an hour before tea.

The shop was well stocked and not badly priced and the staff were very friendly. The site was very secure however I think the speed limit on site should apply to the cars and bikes (it was a bit like E.T at times)

To sum up if you want a quiet time this is not the site for you, if you are going in a group it is ideal. If you want to be away from the hustle and bustle of the pub and playarea ask for field 5 especially if you are in a caravan as you may get put right next to the playarea, as is very noisy
