Staff cheerful and helpful. Comprehensive facilities kept clean at all times and obviously well maintained. Constant hot water. Launderette excellent. Callow Inne the on-site pub / brewery serves reasonable food and has a large seating area outside. Well stocked shop. Very child friendly site. There appeared to be hundreds at week ends but no bother.
Ideally located to explore the dales, shop and sight-see. Ashbourne, less than 5 minutes away has all the supermarkets, pubs and takeaways needed. The George and Dragon serves a great Sunday lunch but beware. Local meats and vegetables are served in a giant Yorkshire pud. You may have trouble clearing your plate.
We only have 2 minor gripes. The steep hill up to the site is too narrow for vehicles to pass and has numerous. Potholes, serious resurfacing is long overdue. Uphill starts when towing = burning clutch. The site itself has far more speed bumps than it needs, and some even at 3 mph are vicious. All in all an excellent site which we will definitely be using again

I took my girlfriend on her first camping holiday here and she hasn't looked back since. The toilets and the showers were always clean and we had plenty of room for our tent with there only being about 3 or 4 other tents in our field. The pub is fantastic and the shop is well stocked. Only down side is that if you have kids the arcade is a bit of a let down (perfect for me as I remember playing them games when I was a child) Also there is a short distance to walk to the town centre.

We were greeted by very friendly staff upon arrival. The field was nicely sheltered and well maintained.
The beer is brewed on site and I thought it was delicious. The pub was very comfortable and had a lovely space to sit out and enjoy the sun.
The cafe, bar and function room is family friendly, with a pool table and TV. The toilets are handy and just around the corner is the arcade.
There is a great playing area for the little ones with well maintained slides, climbing frames, etc.
The swimming pool proved most popular and appeared very clean and well looked after.
The only down side for me was really the showers. Right. Why do we have to pay to use the facilities that we have already paid for? The showers themselves were a little pokey and had the head directly above your head. There was no way to adjust the temperature and it was quite cold. Guys, get it sorted!
Apart from that I enjoyed my stay and would recommend this site, which is a stone throw away from Ashbourne and the Tissington Trail to anyone

Have just got back from staying at this site for two nights.
Its in a good location.Took us about twenty mins to walk into the town, with lots of walks close by.
Went to the zoological park, about a twenty minute drive away. Wasn't expecting much by the leaflet but we were pleasantly surprised when we got there.
A fairly big place with lots of different species of birds. All enclosures looked new and well looked after.
The campsite itself was a good size,we were in field 4 where everybody was well spaced out.
Staff were faultless, very friendly on arrival at reception.
Went to the callow inn on site served by a friendly lady named eli. Food and drink was also good.
The only downside to the campsite would be the toilets, always had toilet roll in but weren't the cleanest.

I spent four days here with my son and we had a great time. My 5 yr old loved the cafe and the playground. It is a truly friendly campsite and all the staff were very helpful and friendly.
The site is very handy for Ashbourne, the Tissington Trail, Matlock and other places. Pitches very big and the site is well looked after and kept clean. Would recommend to anyone and we look forward to returning again this year.

Not as good as the reviews suggest. All the positive comments are true enough, location, pool, play area etc but there are problems.
There simply are not enough toilets and showers for everyone when the site is full. Even with charging for the showers to speed people up there were queues every morning.
Same with the toilets - and it didn't help that every morning one of the blocks closed for cleaning at 8am - surely that's the busiest time?
And worst of all, 6 washing up sinks for the whole site. I saw a couple of arguments start with people getting frustrated.
If you are on field 4,6 or 7 expect a long walk for a wee if you get caught short at night as what loos there are are all situated in the middle area of the site
I'm told the fishing isn't great - too many rules stopping him using baits and kit he wanted too. He also said £5 a rod was too much.
1 final moan - a plus for me was the pub and it's own beers. It's a shame none of the staff can pull a pint and that the microbrewery producing 3 ales isn't up to much. I ended up on lager as the beers were not very good at all and it's quite hard to mess up pulling a pint of lager!

We are a family of 6 who have visited Callow Top on several occasions. It is such a nice site, and within 45 minutes of home for us, so a perfect weekend away.
The kids play area is excellent, as are all of the facilities on site. The toilets, showers and washing up facilities are always faultlessly clean with plenty of hot water. The on site shop is always well stocked with provisions, the pub is great and the barn / cafe serves good value meals.
We walk and cycle a lot, so the on site access to the Tissington trail is perfect, miles and miles of flat cycle / walking path which is perfect for families.
Slight downsides from our point of view are that it is a large site, often with groups of campers and it can sometimes be noisy well into the night. The pitches aren't huge, so not a lot of space between them so not much privacy. You'll get to know your neighbours! But that said, the tent fields are flat and well cared for.
In all, Callow Top is a good site for families, with lots of good facilities!

We all really enjoyed our week at Easter here, loads for the kids to do. Lovely pub for adults, serving lovely food.
Showers spot on, pot washing area great. Site very well maintained and security very good.
Ashbourne is lovely and within walking distance.
Please beware though as the entrance to this site was up an *VERY steep hill!*
Our car and van made it up fine, however the car and caravan in front of us had to be towed up, as they couldn't make it up! Lots of men were at one point holding the caravan to stop it slipping backwards! They actually burnt their clutch out!
We were advised to 'take a good run at it??
Apparently it is often a problem??
That said, we had a great week and have rebooked already.

First time for our family at this site and we all loved it, and will be going back. We never had to wait for showers, pot washing etc. but I'm not sure if this would be the case during summer hols or bank holiday weekends All the staff were friendly and helpful
Facilities:-
Showers:- were really clean and are very spacious, they cost 20p which lasts about 4 mins, if you want longer you can put more 20p coins in to extend your time (you don't have to get out of the shower to do this!) and the shower 'rooms' were large enough for 2
Pot washing:- was in a room so no standing out in the rain or cold, and water lovely and hot
Ladies loo's:- there is a hair dryer in the ladies loo's which takes 20p coins, and a socket next to it for straighteners that also took 20p coins, the loo's were always spotlessly clean, and never ran out of loo roll!
Swimming pool:- there is a swimming pool on site and a shallow pool for the little ones, which were heated, plenty of tables for adults to sit at with a drink
Pub:- there is a pub on site but we never used it so cannot comment on this
The barn:- which seemed to be a cross between a cafe and a pub, it had nice leather sofa's for comfort, cafe style table and chairs, a bar, pool tables. You can order food in here, and even order it to take away if you wish, the food prices seemed to vary in price, some things did not seem that cheap but other things seemed a really good price, chips were £1.85 and you got a nice big portion, and you could order a pizza slice (the slice being a quarter of a 12 inch pizza!) and these vary depending on flavour, we liked the chicken tikka, you could get a whole 12 inch pizza for £6:75 for cheese & tom or if like us you like the chicken tikka idea that was £7:99 for a whole pizza, they also did a good range of other meals including children's meals
Play area:- lovely secure play area for the kids, not suitable for toddlers but good for up to 12 years, my kids loved it
On site shopP:- the shop had a good selection and prices seem reasonable
There was also a small arcade which we did not use, and there was also a laundry room, but again we didn't use, I had a quick look in and think there was about 2 or 3 washers and dryers, and there was also a fold down ironing board and iron I'im sure this took 20p coins) you could also hire bikes and those little buggy type things to put your kids on the back, but again we never used these, so cant remember the prices, you could also hire fishing rods, and fish in the on site lakes
The site is a really lovely location, would be nice for people who like walking

Was a lovely site. Everything on site that you could need! Well stocked shop. Was a cafe bar and a pub, we didn't use either of these though.
Lovely park for the kids that was spotlessly clean and fairly secure. Great free washing up facilities, toilets were clean, well lit and heated!
We were on field 6 which was fairly quiet, which was lucky as if pitches were full I don't think there would be much room for large tents pitching.
We did pop into the local town but as it was Sunday most shops where closed. Had 3 supermarkets - waitrose, sainsburys, and co-op! Noticed a few camp shops, fair few pubs and a tea room! Will definitely be going for a return visit!
