May 2005 Callow Top is situated about a mile from the picturesque market town of Ashbourne. Entrance to the site is up a long steep hill, from which the Tissington Trail can be accessed. On May Day weekend we found that the trail was much busier on Sunday than it had been on Saturday, with cyclists and walkers vying for space.
The site itself has various facilities, including an outdoor heated swimming pool with ample terrace area. Also having a pub boasting its own brewery, serving a modest choice of menu; service was slow but food was good. Booking a table is strongly recommended. There are two toilet blocks, however one seems to be used far more due to its proximity to the rally fields, play area and function room. The small shop was well stocked and open for a reasonable amount of hours. The play area was surprisingly along the main thoroughfare of the site. The equipment was in good condition but there was not much for pre-school children.
The site seems to cater more for caravans; pitches with hook-up were on hard standing, making it extremely difficult to drive pegs in. There had been a lot of rain but some areas of the rally fields were poorly drained and therefore muddy in places.
On the whole, it is a fairly large and well located commercial site, providing good facilities and low noise levels after 11pm.

September 2004 Had a lovely visit to this site. Only our second ever trip. Facilities were excellent. Pub/brewery didn't take children but never fear the activity room had a small bar selling lager, beer etc as well as soft drinks. Childrens disco on Saturday was enjoyed by our daughter. We stayed on one of the non hook up fields. My only moan was the small pitch area. Our tent filled it leaving us very close to the neighbours. Forntunatly they were a lovely family. The adventure playground was of a good safe standard. The bathroom facilities were very clean. There is lots to see in the surounding area and the lovely town of Ashbourn. Dove dale is well worth a visit....if the weather is nice a paddle too! Lots of great walks and scenery. Also Alton Towers very close by. In summary a clean safe site.Oh I forgot to mention the great outdoor heated swiming pool!

August 2004 Hi, we had our first ever camping trip here in August 2004. Just myself and my wife - managed to get a babysitter for the long weekend so our children (4 and 1) wouldn't get in the way of our stressful 'putting up the tent for the first time'.
The site was excellent - friendly staff, lots to do. We brought our bikes with us (again, first time riding in over 15 eyars) and spent some time on the Tissington Trail (campsite ajoins the trail).
We were in the bottom field, which I have seen people complain about the distance to the facilities. But hey, we were camping, so expect a few minutes walk. Toilets were clean (always a bonus).
We liked it so much we came back a couple of weeks later with the 2 children and two of our friends who were also new to camping. We hired a bike trailer and all 6 of us set off down the Tissington Trail.
And the kids loved the playground.
All in all, I'd give it 10/10 and highly recommend it to anyone.

September 2004 When I visited Callow Top, there was a group of us. There is a certain rule that if you make a lot of noise after 11 o clock you could get thrown off. This is good as it stops rowdy carravaners keeping you awake. There is plenty for everyone to do. There is an adventure park and a games room for the kids. There is also a tea room which includes a ping pong table and pool tables. One day, we walked along Tissington Trail into Ashbourne, I thought it would be a long walk, but it didnt take long at all. We had a good time in the shops at Ashbourne. The shower and toilet blocks were clean and there were plenty of them spread around the site, so wherever you were on the site, it wasnt a long walk to the toliets and showers. The pub was very nice. There is a family part and also a part where unders 18's arent allowed. This is a good idea for adults who want to be alone for a while. I would definately visit Callow Top again, as it is great for children and adults of all ages!!

August 2004 A large friendly family site well away from roads. We stopped on Field 4 - which was great. The field is well marked out(all pitches are around the perimeter of the field - hence the tent across the field from you is 150 yds away) leaving plenty of space between tents for your car. The pitches on this field were all flat and well sheltered by the surrounding high hedges. The other tenting site was much larger and exposed (in comparison to field 4) with camping around the perimeter and centre of the field. This got very muddy and churned up by cars at it's entrance / exit due to the number of cars on it but also by the unseasonally wet weather.
The on site pub is quaint and cosy serving reasonably priced food and drink. Just be aware that food is on a first come first served basis - i.e they will serve 40 people then that's it. The pub lawn / tea room is also the centre for evening entertainment - this can be noisy which carries across the site. However, consideration was shown by the site and campers as 11pm noise curfew was adhered to in the 5 nights we were there. The showers are large cubicles - you could feasably take a family into the cubicle to shower together; although they did get a little dirty as you walk straight from outside into them ( they also cost 20p for 3 minutes hot water) The toilet blocks were modern with lots of sinks and lavatories. They were cleaned twice daily although the mens was persistently smelly and dirty; though my wife commented upon how clean the ladies were. The washing up room was again modern and plenty of hot water but not enough sinks and there were often ques. It was school holidays during our stay - LOTS of children ! But it is a family site with play area and swimming pool.

August 2003 Nice location which is in a good location as a base for touring peak district. Site has an outdoor pool which is kept well and popular with the kids. When we stayed the site was overcrowded. The pitches are very small in a number of the fields, with our neighbours guy ropes crossing ours! It is also a very noisy site, so don't go for peace and quiet. The facilities are average as they are catering for too many people. If the owners were less greedy and not cramming people in it would much improve. I would not recommend this site and would not go again.

August 2004 Just returned from a week at Callow Top, and we thought it was a great site. The showers were hot and the cubicles were warm, which was nice, the water for washing up and washing was also hot. We found everything very clean, and the kids 11 & 13 loved the pool and games room and made loads of friends. The shop was small but seemed to have everything you might need. Although the site was full we didn't find it uncomfortably busy and we didn't have any problem with noise,(we were also fairly near to play area). We did have a few problems with puddles round the tent, but to be fair, we went the weekend when the rain was pretty excessive with floods around the country!! Will definately be visiting again.

August 2004 Spent a long weekend here with 3 small children 6,4,1 in a touring caravan on the rally field. The pitches can be quite close together when very busy. The weather was glorious. The paddling pool was a real bonus, very clean and good seating area around it. Shop adequate. Playground was great but not in a good position, right next to the main thru fare for all cars, caravans etc and very busy. Kids leave playground and have to cross this area. Very small kids on bikes riding across cars, not sure where the parents are. But overall good kids facilities and they loved the outdoor disco on Sat night. Facilities are a long way from field 6, nice field. Showers were fairly clean, don't forget your 20p.
Tissington Trail direct access. Don't miss Dovedale (the stepping stones) turn left out of site and left again. Miss the first car park (farmers field £1, long walk) and head for official car park £2. Also Carsington Water on the Matlock Road has a brilliant adventure playground and water sports. Will surely visit again.

August 2004 Have just spent a weekend in a tent at Callow Top with our two boys aged 3 and 5 and although the site was full to bursting we all loved it. We were in field 6 which was a bit of a walk from the facilities but we had loads of room which was great. Sat outside our tent until 11.30pm Saturday night and there was no noise at all. Paddling pool was brilliant for the children and the play area was good although busy. Arrived in the pub at 8.50pm Friday and got a decent meal at a sensible price without waiting too long. Be aware that the shop is very basic but Ashbourne is close by and has plenty of shopping.

July 2004 I chose this site because of the facilities for children particularly teenagers. The two older boys did enjoy themselves and made full use of the pool and indoor playroom. The site is huge and unfortunately has outgrown the facilities that are provided. It was mad busy all of the time with queues to go to the toilet, queues for the showers, queues to wash up, even queues to get on and off the site at busy times! We had a pitch at the bottom of field 3 which was quite peaceful compared to other areas and fortunately because we have a caravan we were not as reliant on the overstretched facilities as others. This site needs to invest in at least one other toilet / shower block so that campers can fully appreciate the surroundings. There also seemed to be a lack of water/ fire/ waste points for a site of this size. Certainly not the best site I've ever visited which is sad because it has great potential. 5/10
