Callow Top is a great campsite with good facilities. Its a great spot for a base camp if you are into walking.

Ashbourne town is just down the road if you need to stock up on supplies.

The road leading up to to campsite is long and steep. So be careful!

The park is great for the kids for burning all that extra energy off.

My only negative with this site is the cost, you will need a bank loan for a week here.

Overall its great for pitching up for a few nights,if you want a break from driving.

Been a few times before but quite disappointed this visit, weather was bad and pitches very flooded, awful drainage so I would not recommend going after heavy rain. Our pitch was pretty water logged but there were some much worse.
Having said this our last day was dry and looked to be sunny, however we were told under no circumstance(even if we paid extra) would we be able to stay later and allow our kids to enjoy the pool(a little strict, as the site was not fully booked for the next day).
The club house was still good for sat night entertainment and the play area has had a refurb so its very good.

Probably the best campsite I have visited.

The pitches for tents are well laid out and big enough to accommodate big tents.

The check in was quick and efficient. The toilets, showers etc were clean and never over crowded - our visit was out of season, but the park was busy due to a caravan convention taking place, even so the facilities were more than adequate.

The Swimming pool and paddling were very clean and the kids loved them.

The on-site pub was a real surprise as it had the atmosphere of an Olde World pub. The pub wasn't open during the day, but the cafe bar was open which was ideal for kids as it had pool tables, ping pong, a large screen TV and for us adults some comfortable sofas (great news if its raining)

The food served in the pub was great - big portions and good quality - not over priced either.

The local town of Ashbourne is a 25 minute walk away along the picturesque Tissington trail. Its a nice town with a mix of small quirky shops as well as a Sainsbury and Somerfield - so you can pretty much get anything you may need there.

I will definitely be going back and would recommend this as a family orientated campsite.

I would certainly not consider myself to be a moaner but did find more negatives than positives on this site.

Upon booking the site I expressly confirmed the size of our tent to ensure the pitch was large enough an upon arrival we were allocated a pitch which was not big enough for our tent. Thankfully given that the site was very busy they were able to move us and our friends to another pair of pitches.

I found that the pitches generally were not well serviced. Our pitch had dog food and a pile of stones which needed to be removed before pitching.

The grass was also quite long which didn't help.

I thought the facilities were above average, the toilet blocks were fairly dirty at times but the site was chocka block.

The site was very very noisy especially near the playground / pub, but the kids seemed to enjoy it.

On a positive note the reception staff were very friendly and the pool was very good.

Overall though I'm not sure I would visit this site again.

I was very happy to find a site which didn't have a long list of rules! I had no problems booking and our stay was brill. It is a very large site with large fields for camping and it is clean with nice surroundings. The only downside was the very small bar area, which was crammed with people, too small really to say how large the site is.

I found it hard to find a site in or near derbyshire with a swimming pool and allowed dogs, this was the only one I found and the one I went back to!

We have been to this site on many occasion and was our first camping experience 8 years ago. Not much has changed over that time apart from building a shop and booking in area and we have upgraded to a campervan.

The site itself is great, and well catered for families, in wonderfully placed surroundings, however. The staff can be a little abrupt and miserable, especially if you want to stay until later in the afternoon, (you have to be off for 11am on the day of departure or pay an extra night) The touring pitches have a hardstanding which could happily fit two vans side by side, but a pain in the backside if you want to pitch an awning as you will need hardened steel nails to peg out.

The costs have risen quite a bit and having to pay for extras like awning, children, pets, pup tents it can mount up to an expensive weekend away. And that's not considering having to pay for the showers, just make sure you go before 7am and after 11pm or the queue can be quite long.

All in all not a bad site, but I will be giving it a miss for a while until they sort out there extortionate charges and more flexible to their timing for leaving.

For a first time experience Callow Top is definitely the place to go. Well recommended.

Be advised ! The hill approach to the reception is very, very steep. Some tourers may have difficulty.

The reception staff were very pleasant and helpful. The store next to the reception was well stocked with the basic groceries and also sold some camping accessories at affordable prices.

The shower experience is one to remember. For 20p, this will be one of the hottest and most refreshing showers you could have outside of your home.

The swimming pool was clean, tidy and busy. Considering that the deepest part was approx 8' deep, I did have some concern that there was no lifeguard on duty, as at other leisure sites.

The play area for the children was excellent and kept my three children happy.

To summarise, great campsite with good amenities. Only thing I would like to see changed would be the tent field 7 having its own toilet block.

This campsite is in a great location for visiting the Peaks, and the nearby market towns such as Ashbourne. There's plenty to do for the outdoor enthusiasts - walking, cycling, fishing on site etc - and for kids on the campsite itself.

Arrival at the site is up a steep hill with speed ramps, and when our car was fully loaded, the bottom of the car did scrape a couple of times, even while driving at 2-3mph.

Check-in was swift and painless, and directions to our plot were easy. The plot itself was large, and the tents were sited around the edge of a large oval field which was great for kids (and adults) to play in. (the abundance of space makes us wonder why they charge for all the extras such as 2 cars, gazebos, awnings etc). The plot was on a very small slope, but we didn't notice once the tent was up.

The showers and toilets were clean, but there weren't enough of them so queues could be long at peak times of the day. The showers are separate from the sinks and toilets, which is a small inconvenience. Also they were quite far away from some parts of the site, so the trek for a shower, the washing up, or the loo in the middle of the night was a bit arduous.

The water point for our field (field 6) was at the entrance, and we were at the far end, so this was also quite arduous when carrying a heavy water container.

The facilities for kids were fantastic - activity ground, arcade, swimming pool and toddlers pool, playing field, walking/cycling tracks etc.

The fishing on site was also good with plenty of fish biting - however, if you have a lot of gear it's not walking distance and you will need to drive to the lake.

The shop was very well stocked, and they sold frozen ice-packs which was a BIG plus. It was also open long hours.

We were there for a weekend during the school holidays, and obviously it was fully booked. While we didn't feel crammed in, and it wasn't a noisy site after dark, it could be hard to navigate a car through the crowds of pedestrians.

This site is particularly good if you have young children as the play area was in full swing every evening - however, do not pitch near there if you don't have/or like, small children as it is very noisy.

The snack bar has pool tables and a TV screen which was used by teens - so they are occupied in the evenings which was good for us with two 15 year old girls.

The pub had a limited menu but the food was good and reasonably priced.

Overall, the pitches were not that large, so if you have a big van, do make sure they can accommodate you. The tent fields did appear to be packed in quite closely together and I wondered about the safety aspect.

The showers were fine - 20p per shower for approx 4 mins. There are also washing machines / tumble driers and a pot washing area.

Our girls used the pool regularly and seemed to enjoy that.

The grass on the pitches could have done with more regular cutting plus the hedges were quite overgrown. As we do use CC sites, this stood out like a sore thumb

There are rather raised speed bumps on the very steep slope to the site - so do be very careful or you'll take the bottom of your van/car off or, as one other did, disconnect the car from van!

The Tissington Trail is on the doorstep, which can be accessed from the site and bikes can be hired too. Have to say, this wasn't nearly as nice as the Manifold Valley bike trail. It was slightly uphill all the way and the scenery was nothing compared to the Manifold Valley trail.

Probably wouldn't use this site again as two adults - but with kids / teens, it suited the purpose. The staff were helpful and friendly also.

Now this was a chance find thanks to ukcampsite.co.uk, we arrived late but a note had been left detailing where we should go.

Facilities were SUPERB site was clean bar was shooberp! and friendly.

The heated open air pool was a great attraction for all ages whether rain or shine, plenty for the kids to do.

A bit busy in the peak times but we will be there next year.

Quite a steep pull up to the site so beware when you go and go you should, it's in a great location for touring.
