This site is great for couples and families alike. The facilities are great and the outdoor swimming pool is a real treat if you have children. The playground was also good though some of the equipment in the games room was a bit dated.
We camped in field 6 for 2 nights in the kids holidays and it was extremely busy so I'd avoid this site during school holidays if your looking for a quiet break. The field had a toilet block on it and the showers were 100 yards down the road which wasn't really an issue.
It rained quite heavily on the day of our arrival but the water quickly disbursed when the weather picked up so the site drainage is good.
The shop was well stocked and open from 8:30am until 8:30pm which was really handy though the information leflet did state that it was not open for as long when the site was quieter.
We ventured in to the bar on Saturday night as they had advertised a kids disco. The disco was indeed on but it felt and looked bit like phoenix nights so we only stayed for one drink. Fosters lager was around £2.50 a pint and it tasted aright too.
Ashbourne is a really nice town and well worth a visit. I particularity recommend going to the park where the play area, paddling pool and duck feeding area kept us and the kids amused for a good couple of hours.
The sites doesn't allow unaccompanied under 21 year olds or single sex groups so the site has a great family atmosphere. As other reviewers have said they don't restrict the size of any parties so some people may be intimidated by camping between 2 large groups but we were fine.
All in all a good site and I'll definitely go again at some point!

A good site in a good location. The web site write up is accurate. I stayed in field 6 which was a bit of a hike to the showers. The pub local brew and food were excellent. The pool and play area for the kids was a big hit.
We are a cycling family and the site is perfect for the Tissington trial with easy cycling to both Tissington and Ashbourne.
The downside I had my bike stolen in the middle of the night by a thief who cut the lock off with bolt cutters. I was disappointed to find out from the staff after the event that a bike had been stolen the previous week and 3 the previous season but they did not warn people (bad for business?) and the CCTV was not on all sections and access to the site. Our other bikes were left untouched as they were cheap models the thief or thieves knew what they were after. Be warned do not take an expensive £500+ bike to this site.
Apart from the theft, we enjoyed the site and the weekend. We will visit again but without bikes!

Very busy site, lively and quite noisy but not excessively so. Good facilities, toilets and showers clean and in good order. Excellent location for access to Peak District and Ashbourne, the latter being walkable. Staff very friendly and helpful - our next door neighbour's late night problem with an electrical unit tripping was dealt with by the duty manager within minutes. A few minus points;
1. The access driveway is VERY steep, and surfaced with very well worn tarmac. We were unable to get up the slope in the rain with our touring caravan. - it was like driving on ice, zero traction. I was fortunate to have a friend who had already arrived on site with a 4x4, so we were able to hitch up to his car, but others really struggled. Time the site invested in some Scotch Grip high friction surfacing for the slope. The cost to them would probably be less that it was to install the incredibly numerous very irritating speed bumps, the scraping marks on some of which indicating how viscious they were.
2.The price for a pitch is very much high-end, but as stated the facilities were pretty good. But what I find annoying is being surcharged for 'extras' such as awning (even a small porch one), gazebo, pup tent, extra car. Not something I've come across before, reminded me of Ryan Air's extras on base prices. Only a few quid, I know, but if you've paid to occupy a pitch what difference does it make how you use it?
3. Water. Not enough stand pipes - we had quite a trek to get a refill.
Gripes aside, a decent site and well worth a visit.

We have just returned from our first ever camping trip with a few friends. First impressions of the site were good. Check-in was quick, and the overall feel of the site was friendly and clean. The pitches were around the border of the field leaving a large area in the middle for kids to play.
We were pitched fairly close to a toilet block, but I imagine those in the fields with no facilities had quite a trek in the middle of the night. The shower facilities were clean, but there are nowhere near enough on site for the volume of people there. This coupled with the fact that the hot water was not working at all in the main 8 shower block meant that there was a lot of queuing at peak times.
The site was fairly noisy at night (or at least it was during our stay). There was no enforcement of the “no noise after 11pm” rule, and some of the larger groups were partying well after 1am with no consideration for others. Great if you are after a site for a big group gathering, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for a small family trip.
The pub onsite was fairly reasonably priced – it didn’t open until 7pm in the evening but there was beer available from the cafe next door. The kids playground is situated right next to the beer garden so you can watch your kids playing while having a drink, but be warned that the area is overrun with older kids so it’s not ideal for smaller children to be playing. The outdoor swimming pool also tends to get a little boisterous as well.
There is a nice walk down into Ashbourne across the fields at the bottom end of the site, although it is fairly steep and has a few stiles and steps to negotiate (not ideal with a pushchair!). A tip for those making the walk back with a pushchair. Rather than cutting back over the fields we continued along the Tissington Trail and then cut through a gate on the left which brought us out by the bridge you pass under when arriving at the site. Still a steep climb up the road but nowhere near as steep as the walk back over the fields (watch out – the gate is actually marked as a private gate so it easy to miss).
Overall we had an enjoyable first camping experience, but will probably look to stay at a smaller, quieter site next time around.

We spent a fabulously hot & sunny weekend at Callow Top; two families with 4 kids between us aged from 6 weeks to 9 years!
Very well organised site - it was packed to bursting the last weekend in May - with great facilities; plenty of clean toilets and good washing facilities, excellent on-site pub with Saturday night family disco, shop and cafe-bar.
The tent field (field 4) was big with plenty of space in the centre for kids to play. Pitches were spacious and easy to access. Our own visit was slightly spoilt by having to pitch opposite the entrance to the field - couldn't believe how rude and inconsiderate lots of other campers were, walking right through our pitch to short-cut across the field all throughout the day and night.
The swimming pool was too busy to use but obviously very popular, as was the children's play area located conveniently close to the beer garden! Our lively children really enjoyed the safe atmosphere and the older ones disappeared off to play cricket and make new friends.
Would definitely recommend.

Clean and tidy with good facilities for the kids and the grown ups. The staff were friendly and polite.
Being in a small tent we didn't use hook ups etc, however the hard standings for the big guys looked very well maintained and laid out.
The surrounding Derbyshire Dales are stunning and Ashbourne is a short walk along the Tissington Trail (dissused railway).
The only criticism I could level at the site was the distance of the toilet block from where we were camped. Our field didn't have any facilities other than a stand pipe and so we had to walk to the next field. Whilst only a couple of 100 yards, if you need to go in the middle of the night, it was a bit of a trek.
Other than that, highly recommended!

Just returned from our 3rd visit to Callow Top. We stayed for 3 nights and the weather was fantastic. Baking hot days and balmy evenings made for a lovely family break.
Callow Top is ideally located for walking into picturesque Ashbourne and it's only a short distance to Dove Dale, Thorpe Cloud and the Manifold Valley. If you love walking and taking in the scenery of Derbyshire then you are all set.
Entry to the site is controlled via an entry barrier and the main gate is locked at night until 6.30am, giving a real sense of security.
Pitches here are really spacious and easily accommodated our 12 man tent and car. From previous experience there is no electric hook-up available for tents however we did notice a few tents had been allocated caravan pitches, so they did have electric. Presumably you can request (and pay for) a caravan pitch for a tent when you book!
Facilities at this site are really good, these include:
* An an outdoor heated swimming pool (although we didn't use it this time)
* A pub serving Sunday lunch (needs to be prebooked at reception)
* A bar which serves food such as burgers, chips etc also has pool tables, table tennis and TV's (this is only open Fri, Sat & Sun)
* A kids playground
* Laundry room with an iron (20p for 4 minutes)
* Pot wash
* Games arcade - although this could do with some sprucing up and some new games as some are quite old or broken
* On site shop stocking everything you could need from bread and milk to spare air beds
There are 3 toilet blocks, the largest of which is located in the same building as the bar. A second set is 50 yards across from the main block and a third set is located in field 6 (although this is only a portacabin). From previous experience these are always clean and have plenty of loo roll although more facilities located around the site would be better - perhaps a toilet block per field as people located in fields 4, 5 and 7 have quite a trek to the loo.
The main toilet block has a hair dryer (20p for 4 minutes) and a socket for plugging in straightners/tongues (again 20p for 4 minutes). Could probably do with more places to plug in your own appliances as 1 socket really isn't adequate.
There are 8 showers, located in the main block, (20p for 4 minutes) again clean, tidy and spacious. The water was lovely and hot each time we visited although more showers are definitely needed. When you consider the size of the site there can be quite a queue, especially first thing in the morning.
All in all this site is lovely with good facilities and even reasonable prices in the bar.
We did have one gripe however, and that is group bookings.
It appears that Callow Top do not enforce any restriction on large party bookings, which is great if you are a member of a large party, but not so great if you are family of three placed smack bang right in the middle of two massive groups.
We have to say the first party (which arrived by BUS!) were an absolute nightmare. The kids were like wild animals running riot and the parents appeared oblivious or indifferent. We lost count of the amount of times a football, frizbee or tennis ball was kicked or thrown whacking into our car. Not once did they apologise or make any attempt to curb their children's behaviour. We ended up having to move our car and move to the other side of our tent to get away from them.
The second party were ok as they did seem to keep themselves to themselves but the noise, till very late, was awful. We thought Callow Top had a noise curfew but we didn't notice anyone patrolling, which we have witnessed at other sites.
It can be quite intimidating to be put in the middle of large group when you are a small family on your own, and perhaps Callow Top should consider this and maybe restrict numbers or allocate a designated field for large party bookings.
All in all we did have a fantastic time and we would definitely return again but maybe next time with re-enforcements :)

We booked this site with another family a week in advance over the phone - very professional service and good value.
When we arrived the site was fully booked up and obviously very popular. Good facilities (especially from Field 3 where we were)and the pub food was reasonably priced. Checking out the rest of the site Field 6 with 91 pitches had a great atmosphere!
The weather was fantastic, so we took a walk into Ashbourne along the Tissington Trail - very pleasant! Nice swimming pool, but too busy and the rules need to be strictly applied to control the bigger kids. There was a Saturday night disco for kids & adults which maybe went on a bit too late (particularly as the music was awful) But generally very good and to be recommended.

Child orientated site! We went with our two children that loved it. The approach road is beautiful, but is a little steep towards the end.
There is a large play area, games room, on-site pub, outdoor swimming pool. Football field is nearby too. On-site shop is fairly large and well stocked.
The fields are large with plenty of room for even the biggest tent.
Toilet/shower blocks are clean but there was always a queue. Remember children mess things up very quickly.
The staff are very helpful and welcoming too.
Just be ready for a lot of children but if you have children they will love it.

We've just returned from a lovely 4 day camping holiday at Callow Top with friends. The site is extremely child friendly. The site has a playground for the kids as well as an outdoor swimming pool (although you'll be hard pushed to do much swimming in hot weather due to the popularity of the pool).
Toilets and showers were clean. Although some more showers & toilets wouldn't go amiss when the site is really busy, especially nearer the camping fields (6 & 7).
The family had a great time, so we'll definitely be back.
