Just had a great week here with 2 adults and four children(12-16). The pool kept the 2 boys amused when we were not doing anything else.
There is not as much to do as on the big commercial sites but that is what makes this site very good, there is enough on site if you want to just relax. We went on some of the Tissington walks, which are very good and fairly easy for most.
Alton Towers and Matlock are just down the road and it is a good little walk(20 minutes) into Ashbourne on the Tissington trail through the old railway tunnel with sound effects.
The pub and cafe on site were very good with friendly helpful staff,as were all the site staff.
The pitches are a good size. I got a 27ft tent, 16x14 gazebo, car, trailer and toilet tent(if we were too far from the toilets) all on it easily.
For the facilities on site and its location I could not believe how well priced it was. I thought it was too good to be true before we got there. I could not find a comparable site for the same price.
The only improvement I could suggest would be more showers/toilets but then the price goes up. We just waited until mid afternoon for the showers.
Will definitely be going back, in fact tried to book for bank holiday for the Ashbourne beer festival but alas nothing left.

We have just returned from a mid week break at Callow Top and have to say its a brilliant family site. There is plenty for the children to do including the pool and large playground. There are pool tables in the cafe and regular entertainment. And with Alton Towers only 20 mins away its an ideal base.
We also travelled ino Stoke (30 mins) and went bowling and to Waterworld (look it up on the internet - if your children like swimming its a brilliant day out) and there is also an Odeon cinema on the same street. On route to Stoke are a number of well known chain pubs which offer very good value meals (3.75 carvery etc). And fuel in Stoke was very reasonable.
The site was very busy and if you don't have children I would recommend requesting a pitch on fields four, five or six as you would be a bit further away from the playground which opens at 9 and shuts at 10pm and gets rather noisy.
The only two down points we found were that there was often a queue for the showers (only six on the site) and they were a little smelly (drains)and secondly the lovely new toilets in the bottom field were closed for cleaning every day between 8 and 9 am - which is when a lot of people needed to 'go' ! So you had to trek up the site to the other loos.
I would definitely recommend this site and we will be visiting again.

We have been to Callow Top for the last two years, this year two other families came with us in tents. Everything was still as good as the first time we went, the families that came with us really enjoyed it and we are all going back next year.
This is one of the cleanest sites we have been on. Out of our group all the dads and sons went fishing they said the facilities are excellent and they caught plenty of fish between them.
We also visited Alton Towers about a twenty minute car ride from the site. Excellent holiday and lovely clean site. Looking forward to returning next year.

Stayed last week in July- 1st week of school summer holidays with 3 children aged between 9 and 3 years.Nice location just North of Ashbourne.
Has 3 caravan fields and 4 camping fields. We were in camping field 7.We had a nice good sized level pitch with a lovely view over fields. Pitches are allocated on booking, but some choice is available over the phone. Only amenities in field was a standpipe. Nearest toilet/ wash block was 4 mins walk away.
Showers were about 5 mins walk from field in a central block. You have to pay 20p for a 4min shower. There always seemed to be hot water regardless of time of day and the longest I had to wait at busy times was 5 mins. The shower cubicles are large enough to shower kids and were kept fairly clean.
Washing up facilities were in the central block.Could really have done with another washing up area to service the 4 camping fields as people were often trying to wash up in the toilet blocks.
The site shop was very well equipped with all normal newsagent stock, small selection of groceries, toys for kids and off licence plus some camping equipment. We tried to hire bikes from the site but they had all been rented out by 11.00 am so imagine they have only few to rent.
The Callow Top Inn serves very good beer from its microbrewery, but don't touch the coffee- it tasted like dishwater. We didn't eat here but they do serve meals and a roast on sunday which you have to prebook. Arnolds cafe serves snacks but not impressed with the quality of food.
The children's playground was well equipped but got very busy between 6 and 9 pm and was often being used by teenagers. There is a small arcade room which also houses the freezers where you can freeze your ice packs for free.
Didn't make use of pool as the weather was too cool. A few entertainments put on in week if you like that kind of thing- bingo, live band disco but all was quiet by 11pm.
Things to visit in area- Sudbury Hall and Museum of childhood (national trust) very good for kids and wet weather day. Gullivers Kingdom in Matlock Bath - loads to do thought very good value for money.Abraham heights in Matlock Bath- cable car and cavern, fossil exhibition punch and judy. Dovedale - lovely riverside walk with very yummy huge icecreams on sale.
Overall a very good value for money site giving you access to loads to do in the national park.Would definitely return to area but perhaps would like to try a different campsite next time.

Visited callow top for two nights and was really impressed with facilities on offer.Seemed safe environment for children and liked the fact that it was quiet at night for sleeping. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The only down fall really was I thought was that the showers and toilets could have been cleaned more regular due to large amount of people on site.
I did however see cleaners throughout the day however perhaps not often enough.
I would definitely recommend to friends and family and will be revisiting again

This was our first stay at Callow Top and we went so we could camp with our Sister, brother-in-law and their two girls (10 and 12). This is a perfect site for family’s looking for a large holiday park type site that caters to tents, motor homes and caravans. They have several large camping fields (none of which have EHU, except for 2 pitches over the fence from a caravan hard standing section) and ample hard standing for tourers.
The facilities the park offers are extensive, the basics are provided; several shower blocks located in the main complex area, so a bit of a trek from the tent fields, several toilet blocks dotted around, a large shop supplying all the basics and also a fair bit of camping kit (it’s more like a mini supermarket), two swimming pools; one for really little people and one for the bigger kids (it appeared well maintained and clean but no lifeguard), an enclosed play area with swings etc, freezer for ice packs, laundry facilities (not free), a pub and a cafe. We were reliably informed by our sister and the kids that the cafe serves great chips!
The site overall was well maintained and clean, however be warned, this is a huge site and therefore the limited number of showers means a queue each morning (they also decided that the best time to clean the showers was around 10am which I found ridiculous as people were still queuing for the showers at this point and therefore taking a block at a time out of commission to clean them just made the queues longer).
Also the showers aren’t free; they charge 20p for 4 minutes, but for this you do get plenty of hot water and your own enclosed wet room, with plenty of hooks, a mirror and a seat. There are several covered dish washing areas but again be prepared to queue in busy periods. The girls loved the pool which I believe is free of charge, but not 100% sure.
The pitches in the extensive camping fields are a good size and level if a little stony in places. There is a water tap at the gate to each field and there is one toilet block at the crossroads between two of the fields. So be prepared for a fair walk if you are in the furthest field like we were. There is ample room for the kids to play and bikes are allowed to be ridden around the site which makes getting around a lot quicker. You really are in the middle of the Peak District on this site and the scenery is what you would expect from this.
There is also a cycle path that follows the old railway line that was a lovely ride, we would definitely suggest taking your bikes with you or you can hire some on site (as well as child carriers etc). The site is also close to kid friendly attractions like Alton Towers and Gulliver’s Kingdom. Ashbourne is a short cycle away (about 20 minutes) or a 5 minute drive. It is a large town so has all the shops you’d expect.
Overall this site would be great for a family camping trip if you want lots of facilities on site to entertain the kids but still be “camping”. The reason I’m a little mixed in my review is that it’s not a site we would normally choose as we prefer smaller, quieter, more personal sites with basic facilities were you can really experience the outdoors without being surrounded by a few hundred other people.

Lovely site, visited for first time, on a scorching weekend! although the site was very busy, we still managed to get seats in sports bar in an evening, maybe because everyone sat outside it was so warm well into the late evening.
The kids loved the outdoor pool, although I thought it too deep for having no life guards, and encouraged teenagers to dive in, which could potentially cause problems, I saw a few younger children clinging to sides of deep end for dear life as they were almost jumped on! of course parental supervision is advised but not always followed.
The walk into ashbourne is beautiful, and the kids loved the haunted tunnel with train noises that scared me half to death untill we realised it was a recorded sound effect! Phew!
We didn't use the site shop, but it looked to sell most things, you could forget to pack.
I thought paying for showers was a bit mean, but 20p for 4-5 minutes wasn't too bad once you got used to remembering to take the change with you, and as the site was busy, it did help to keep the queue down in a morning. Plenty of hot water for showering and pot washing, fantastic!
All in all a lovely site, with plenty to keep the kids and parents happy, will definitely be visiting again soon.

This is a fantastic site! We were lucky enough to visit the weekend of the only Highland games outside of Scotland and were privileged to hear the bagpipers practising on site the morning of their competition. Not too early I hasten to add. The site has clearly defined pitches, lots of space, fantastic views and amazing facilities inc lovely pub and on site swimming pool ( we used it even when quite cold ). Great play area in central location and massive football pitch for the wee Alex Ferguson in our party to spend time organising the rest of the football massive into teams, leagues etc!A stunning off road walk (with a cafe/ice cream shop)took us along a disused railway line into Ashbourne and a brilliant market, shops and cosy pubs. By far the best site for the beginner camper as it feels safe and secure and has a well stocked shop for all the things you didn't realise you would need!

Sorry to be negative but I was really disappointed with the site. The busy weekend made it worse, but could be so much better. Seemed like the focus was on cramming in as many tents as possible and making as much money as possible. Queues for showers, wash up and sometimes toilets! Facilities not clean, not enough supervision around site. Pub, beer and barbeques were the focus of the site, so if this is your thing great. Pool was nice but seemed to be taken over by children bombing and causing trouble- taking over, and leaving others feeling uncomfortable and going. Plus points- freedom for kids to cycle and explore, shop is handy and the staff in shop were nice and friendly. Location good, but for this price there are so many better sites.

We have just returned from a long weekend at Callow Top, and were blessed with the hottest weekend of the year.
We selected this site as it was relatively close to Alton Towers (20 mins drive away) and although we usually go electric, decided to give the site a go due to the good reviews and extensive facilities.
We were not disappointed! The staff at reception were friendly and helpful and the site information leaflet given on arrival was very useful (Site map. Shop, pub & bar opening times, menu's. Pool rules, etc). We had 2 pitches for 5 adults, aged 25 - 35, 2 of whom had never camped before.
The pitch size was good and the field / boundaries well kept. The site was completely full on the Fri/ Sat night which meant the toilet blocks and shower cubicles came under some usage pressure during busy times. Queues for showers and washing up facilities in the mornings and evenings. (Paying 20p for a 4 minute shower seems a good idea as it stops people taking too long in them!)
The swimming pool was heaving full of kids on the weekend so we waited until the Monday to go for a dip and found it to be quiet, warm and clean. 3 of our group are lifeguards and were impressed by the pool. A good size, and although not lifeguarded, rescue equipment, pool rules and alarms were well placed and easily identified.
The pub was cosy and served lovely food, large portions at very reasonable prices. The bar showed the world cup football games on 2 big screens and served drinks in a pleasant relaxed atmosphere. The shop had a large selection of goods, food, alcohol, camping equipment all at realistic prices. Two large freezers in the arcade room allowed for free re-freezing of ice packs. Laundry room had 2 washing machines, 2 dryers and even an ironing board and iron (20p for 4mins).
There was a small football field with netted goals, and a volleyball net near the entrance of the site. As well as a nice enclosed playground for under 12's which didn't get locked until 10pm! If you don't have children and prefer things a little less crowded, avoid weekends!
The site was one of the best we have been to and would definitely recommend it to friends. More electric tent pitches, toilets, showers and water points would be good, if not essential during busy periods. Hope to come back soon with our newly converted 'happy camper' friends. For a midweek break!
