Have now been twice to Callow Top and both times have really enjoyed it. Nice and quiet if you are in field 6, but it's not as noisy as some make out, you have to expect some noise.
Well happy with the facilities and so what if you have to wait so long for food, you would wait just as long in a resturaunt. The showers are 20p but again so what. Excellent toilet facilities a decent shop and excellent scenery.
A message to all those who moan. Stay in a hotel next time, what do you expect for around a tenner?
Once again exceptional value and we are definately going back in 2004.All this and it's only around 45 min's from home yet it's like a different world.

A real enigma of a site. I agree with many of the negative comments of others.
It is crowded, noisy, the pitches for tourers are small, the facilities never quite keep pace with the expansion of the site. The approach road is awful, and the site operates a strange policy of not allowing any visitors to the site, strictly enforced by a fearsome old chap on an electric scooter.
So why is it one of the most popular sites in the country? I've been going for a number of years and the growth of the site has been phenomenal. The atmosphere is good and my grandchildren love it and ask to go back each year. It does seem an ideal site for children of all ages and a huge advantage is the lack of a motor road anywhere near the site. The short (sometimes steep) walk into Ashbourne along the Tissington Trail is great - visitors should try the sizzling lamb chops in the Old Vaults in the Market Place - the best in the country! I must say that I've always found the staff to be helpful and friendly and they do try and keep the noise from radios to a minimum. The Callow Inn on site serves a decent pint, and contrary to a previous report opens at lunchtime as well as evenings. And of course there's the wonderful Derbyshire countryside. The grand kids want to go again this year, and if they're happy so am I!

 June 2003
Have been coming back to Derbyshire and Callow Top for the past 5 years, the site is ideally situated for Alton Towers the Peak District. The pool is clean and warm and the facilities for children have always been good (our kids are too old for the play area now). A freshly stocked private lake provided an enjoyable mornings fishing with the nephew. Will get better as the fish get bigger. The Tissington Trail is just down the drive and is marvellous for hiring bikes and taking the kids out for a traffic free ride along the disused railway line. Ashbourne is approximately 5 mins away in the car and 15 mins walking.
We always pre-book a pitch in field 4 because it is a large field not too close and not too far away from the amenities. More importantly away from the dust that is kicked up every time a car goes past in hot dry weather.

The toilets are adequate and cleaned regularly. The Callow Top Inn (onsite) serves up reasonable meals but be prepared for a wait at weekends. During our first 4 visits the site had a games barn with table tennis, pool, amusements and T.V. where you could have a beer or two and still keep an eye on the kids. On the last visit in June 2003, part of it was turned into a café area?? Never saw it being used while we were there. Can’t understand why anybody would want to go and pay for a cuppa in a dismal barn when they can sit by the tent in the sunshine……strange.

This is definitely a site that we would come back to over and over again with reservations…………..
……………In June we came on the Monday (just prior to Bill Lupton’s weekend) and were due to go Sunday morning. Monday through to Friday was brilliant, Field 4 virtually to us, then Friday Night!! We wrongly decided to go for a takeaway for Tea and found ourselves stuck in a queue of new arrivals with no way of getting past them, the drive is too narrow for overtaking. We must have been there for about an hour and that is no exaggeration!! There was some sort of work being carried out beside the reception area and I hope it was/is to resolve this situation. When we finally got on site again the noise level was unbelievable with the skip being used for target practice by unsupervised kids and lots of people enjoying themselves at the top of their voices. I like a drink and a laugh but this particular weekend was bad and I believe the police were actually called in to “quieten” the offenders down a bit. The noise continued from Tea time to the early hours. What were clean toilets were now places I would not let the dog go in. Why do people/kids insist on taking the plugs from sinks? This unfortunately happens everywhere and every year. Once again on the occasions I used the toilet facilities on Friday night lots of unsupervised children running around making nuisances of themselves. To be fair lots of kids were enjoying the facilities with parents. Twelve showers became totally inadequate with lots of waits and queues. The cleanliness standards took a nosedive also. Needless to say we packed up Saturday morning and left a day early.

In Summary this is a perfect site that is, unfortunately, ruined on certain weekends of the year due to factors, some of which, are beyond the site management`s control. As we have been coming back for quite a while we have seen the site get bigger and the standards slipping. Yes we would come back but only midweek as we love Derbyshire and as already mentioned Callow Top is in an Ideal base for touring and despite the moans, the site does try to cater for all tastes.

 End August 2003
Lovely site, pool was warm enough to swim in even in the end of season weather.
The tents in the Electric Hook up areas look cramped together compared to the non ehc areas, where there's plenty of room for the kids to play.
Thanks for the earlier reviews, my impression from them was a little negative, but really liked the site when we got there.
Well organised, clean, friendly and safe. Shop was small but good.
Main negative:
Water taps, only one per field.
Field 6 needs the tap to have proper drainage.

 August Bank Holiday 2003
Callow Top for August Bank Holiday! this site has had a long hard summer and it shows - the pitches are worn out not to mention cramped. Nowhere near enough facilities for the number of pitches / people, we could only get to a sink for washing up by 9:30pm and people were still queuing for showers then. Toilet seats were broken and the place just seemed battered after a long hard season. We booked for the bank holiday weekend and came off after one night we will not be returning here, and would recommend that unless you don't mind constant noise and loads of kids marauding around all the time that you give this one a miss.

After my visit to callow top, 4th to 9th aug 2003, and it being my 1st yet tentative introduction to the camping world, I was very pleasantly surprised.
The site is very well maintanined/cleaned and the staff were always happy and curteous (even after working all day and a good portion of the night too). The pool is a good size and well catered for (young and old), all the amenities are close to hand - even from where we were in field 6. The pitches were a good size - cant comment on the rest of the fields but some did seem to be a little cramped (apart from field 4)
You will need 20 pences for the showers - which are great !! really hot (or was that the sun burn) lasts for 4 mins (ish) Beers great ! could do with 2 table tennis tables (take your own bats/balls) live entertainment twice weekly (great).

My only critisism is the freezer used to re-freeze the cold box packs. totally inadequate for the size of campsite - estimate 2 packs for each visitor/160 tents you do the math.

all in all a great week well spent - I have booked for next year all ready and hope the weather is just as good.

Well, after reading all the other reviews of the campsite - Here's Mine!!
On arrival, the staff were extremly helpful and friendly, as this was my first camping experience.
We were situated in Field 4, which was full all the time we were there. I thought the pitches were well spread out, with little noise in the evenings.
The facilities were excellent, 15 very clean showers at any time of the day. OK you had to pay 20p per shower, but thats hardly going to break the bank!!!
The campsite is situated very centrally - Close to the Tissington Trail - Ideal for cyclists and walkers. It was a short walk to Ashbourne, which is very beautiful.
All round FANTASTIC experience.

 June 2003
We loved the site but I'd certainly go for fields 4 or 5, the caravan plots (1,2,3) seemed very close together and a little too near for the facilities (and noise!) for comfort. Good facilities, nicely laid out play area, the pools are a great attraction for the kids, though as expected, busy when the sun's out.
All in all a pleasant site and we'll definitely be heading back.

We visited from Mon - Fri in June before all the kids are on holiday and we had field 4 virtually to ourselves all week.

The site is well presented but can seem a bit austere with all the No doing this and don't do that signs everywhere. The drive is also pretty steep.

The swimming pool and paddling pool were very nice and quite warm, but this is the only free warm water, the showers cost 20p and that's only enough to get the shampoo going, another 20p needed to rince it off again.

Great place for cyclists as the Tissington trail is accessable (for the fit) from the drive.

The "pub" is really a clubhouse and only opens in the evening, good real-ale sold. For those wanting an earlier drink or meal, I'd reccommend the pub about 2 miles up the road at Fenny Bentley.

All in all very nice just wish the showers were free and that it was a bit more laid back with the rules.

An excellent site if you dont mind nois, and have children who want to have fun within the confines of the site.

However beware of a very busy Inn that typically quotes more than 1 hours wait for food, and an addictive pint of mansfield smooth bitter.

We had a fabulous week-end there thanks to glorious weather and the fact that we met some new friends.

Our only complaint is that there was a skip and, what looked like an old railway bank behind our tent. Kids were playing on the bank all the time and throwing large boulders at the skip. You can imagine the noise this makes, expecially at 10.30pm when your trying to get the young'uns to sleep.

I would warn against accepting plots 653,654,655,600,601 and 602 on field 6, they are too near to the bank and skip. We certainly would not go again if they offered us any of these pitches, its just too noisy.

Apart from that we found the site excellent, good pub, good facilites.
