Love this site - so much we are booked to go again next year. We stayed for 5 nights but could have happily stayed here for much longer. The facilities are excellent, outdoor pool, Callow Inne pub, Arnolds Cafe, fab play area and access to some great walks or cycle rides. We were on Field 5 which we definitely preferred as its very peaceful and less noisy. We ate in the pub and the food was good and not over priced. We enjoyed bingo on the Friday night and an open air disco on the Saturday night which was a big hit with the children. We cycled the Tissington trail twice during our stay - its tricky to get to and from with young children as there's a very steep descent down the site driveway to get to the trail but the trail itself is pretty flat on a slight incline to Tissington and a pleasant easy descent on the return - there's also a kiosk at Tissington where you can get an ice cream or cup of coffee and cake before you head back. We didn't go into the pool as the weather was a bit chilly but it did look great. The play area is very conveniently located next to the pub and bar so you can enjoy a more grown up refreshment if you choose with your children in sight of you. Staff are really friendly and helpful nothing seemed too much trouble. The only thing I would mention is that there aren't enough showers (I counted 12 people waiting for a shower one morning) or pot wash sinks and I really don't know why they can't get electricity to at least some of the tent pitches - mind you doesn't seem to affect business though as by the end of the week the site was pretty much full. 20p for the showers is a bit of a nonsense when you have paid so much for the pitches and then its another 20p to plug your hairdryer in which seems a bit unfair to those without electric pitches. However, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back!

Great site for families with kids or groups - not really for those who are camping to be at one with nature :0). Loads of space in middle of fields to play games etc which can go on quite late. Relaxed atmosphere but can get really busy, but this doesn't bother us at all. The pub is right next to the adventure playground which seems to me a match made in heaven!

Toilets and showers really clean and well maintained which is great considering the size of the site.

Would suggest if you can to see if you can get into field 7 as I think you get the best views from here.

We've had a great time both times that we've visited!

Stayed here for two nights for my partners 40th. More family were following later and Callow Top staff catered for us, brill, couldn't fault them.

Pitched and sorted, we wandered around to see the site, Bang on, seems to have the works, for young and old, places to walk, Tissington train on your doorstep.

Swimming pool and park for the kids, while mum and dad can have a cheeky pint while watching them. Meals in or take away, and a useful shop, that sells almost everything.

Pitches were good, layout was fine and the WC's and showers were ok, BUT, could have been cleaner and not enough showers as always a queue, just needs a little TLC.

Over all, we did enjoy it here and would recommend it.

This is a great site with lots to do. Visited over school holidays for 2 nights and was very busy. Tissington trail in to Ashborne took about half hour to walk.

Lots of room on field no 7 for kids to play and well drained, the pool looked good but didn't use due to the weather. Good enclosed play area for the kids and big field with football nets.

The only draw back was the state of the toilets.A very full site and the toilets got in a disgusting state, the owners should have cleaned more, not even cleaned morning or late evening!

You can not call it a 5 star site and not keep up basic cleaning!

WE spent 3 nights at callow top last week. It was my first camping experience and my husband and I and our 2 kids and dog thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were in field 6 which is one of the larger fields and has a small toilet block at the entrance to the field. The main toilet block/showers/pot washing facilities are by fields 2 and 3 but only a 5 minute walk away. The pitches were a good size.

The campsite is set in lovely surroundings and has it's own pub and cafe. We did not go in pub but did eat in cafe on last day and enjoyed the food. There is a well stock shop. All amenities were very clean. It cost 20p for 4 minutes in shower which I thought was fine I managed to shower myself and both kids in 8 minutes. As we were there in half term the site was quite busy and there was a queue for showers in morning (I got in there really early to avoid a wait). The site was slightly noisy at night but I still managed to sleep and with it being half term I was expecting some noise.

There are some lovely walks nearby, a short work through a few fields and you come to a lovely stream which the dog loved swimming in. We also drove to Dovedale which is a 10min drive and is a beautiful walk. Ashbourne is a 5 minute drive ad has a waitrose, sainsburys and a few lovely sweetshops. There is also a good fish and chip shop.

There is also a small play area for kids on site which our 5 and 7 year old loved. I would definitely go back again. I think the one flaw would be that there is only 1 hairdryer in the main toilet block and 1 plug socket for straighteners. But as weather was nice we let our hair dry outside and I just tied mine up to avoid scaring people with the frizzy look! hehe!

We visited here for a weekend with friends with a touring caravan and four kids between us. Unfortunately we couldn't camp together - there are some pitches where you can but they were already booked - but this wasn't a problem.

The site is large, well kept and has good facilities. The kids enjoyed the playground and there was plenty of grassy space for ball games. There is also a separate field with nets for football - great for older children.

The site was quite busy but we never had to queue for toilets or washing up. The toilets were adequate and showers 20p for 4 minutes - there was plenty room to get showered and dressed but I wouldn't risk taking off my crocs!

There was also a nice bar with home brewed beer (very nice according to hubby) and a well stocked shop. You can also freeze ice packs for free. There is also a pool which looked great, but the weather was a bit too chilly for us!

Nearby we visited Kedleston Hall and Ilam (from here we walked to Dovedale stepping stones). Both were within easy reach.

Overall we had a really enjoyable stay - I would definitely recommend it and we will come here again.

The only (minor) criticism is that the office is only open to take bookings or make enquiries from 10am to 5pm - a little later in the evening would be useful - though all the staff we spoke to were very helpful.

Stayed this weekend with our caravan and 2 tent pitches for the kids and friends, we were all pitched together in a lovely little corner.

This is the second time on this site, and we love it! Everyone is friendly and helpful and we didn't have any problems at all. We don't mind paying 20p for the showers as they are always hot and clean.

The site is brilliant for families and we enjoy using the sports bar in the evening to enjoy a drink.

You can enjoy a stroll down to Ashbourne along the tissington trail, although the walk back up makes you sweat a bit!

Looking forward to another break at this site soon

The pluses definitely outweigh the minuses here! Nice level site (once you climb up to it), very well kept and clean across the board. Its well sheltered considering, by tress around all the fields.

We were offered a 4pm Sunday departure, why don't more sites do this on a weekend!??

Its very much a family site and is crawling with mainly young kids, mostly populated in tents which out number the vans. Nice atmosphere though, no issues with teenagers and the site was very quiet after night fall.

The pitches are all hardstanding and level, and are of a good size. We liked the location, short walk into Ashbourne on paths takes 20 mins with an ice cream shop and cafe on the way! Also right on the tissington trail for cycling. In the other direction on the Ashbourne path, cross two fields and there's a pub which welcomes dogs, does food and is very reasonable. (That's if you fancy a move away from the on site pub.)

Here's what we didn't like - the speed humps are ridiculously large for vans. Paying for showers, not only inconvenient but also wastes hot water - I can shower in less than 4 mins. The showers are also in separate individual cubicals, which means even though they are big and have plenty of hooks, they steam up so much that you cant use the hooks because the walls are streaming!

There's not a great deal of water points, and they are mostly located near to the gates, which is awkward when trying to fill a motorhome. Also they have valves on the taps so you cannot click in a hose pipe or screw on your own adapter. Again very awkward for motorhomes. I never saw a water dump point either.

Final minus, I don't think wi-fi should be chargeable when not only have you paid for the pitch, bit also buying drinks in the bar - come on it costs them nothing and should be included.

We had our first camping trip of the season at Callowtop, we are 2 adults and a 2yr old. We found it to be a nice site. The pitches were a good size, and on a flat level which was excellent.

The olde worlde style pub on site was lovely although only opened in the evenings, as we were on mini break, a nice drink in the afternoon sun would have been good but the café was open and you could still sit outside. It was very busy but we didn’t queue much for anything.

The pool looked nice but it was on the chillier side of sunny so we didn’t brave it and the older kids looked quite boisterous so we didn’t want to risk it with the 2 year old.

Same with the playground, it was very good and quite large by most sites standards but the older kids can get quite excitable (which is what kids too!) so we couldn’t leave our little one to play, in an ideal world a separate toddler facility would have been great, but that’s probably my only complaint.

We only had breakfast in the café on our day of departure and it was very nice. The shop was large and well stocked (if a little on the pricey side) and the pot washing facilities were very good. We only stayed 2 days so didn’t use the showers, for which there is an additional charge.

The toilets were mostly clean, muddy foot prints towards the end of the day but otherwise ok. It is a lovely site and probably one we’d visit again in the future but when our son is older.

Personally, we found that there was not a lot in the area for toddlers to do so he got very bored. We he can ride a bike over the hills or walk more that 30 meters without needing a buggy, it’ll be much more enjoyable.

Went over April/May bank holiday weekend with two children (5 and 3). This is a large site with a small static area but mainly for touring and camping. It had everything you need for a fun holiday.

Our children loved the play area which was the best we have experienced. The pools were a big excitement for our two - be warned though the small/baby pool is not heated, the larger one is almost warm! The location is also brilliant.

Our daughter has just learnt to ride her bike without stabilisers and loved the Tissington trail which is accessible from the camp site. We rode into Ashbourne which is lovely.

The Okeover Arms is a must and is just a short stroll over fields (about 10 mins). Food is lovely and well priced.

On the downside, for me, it was a little too busy. To be expected given the BH but still. As the site was full to busting it meant the toilets and showers were well used. They could both have been cleaned with a little more attention to detail and that's not just me being fussy. The showers however (at 20p a go)give you loads of hot water for 4 mins.
