July/August 2004 First visit to callow top and we have had a brilliant time, ok the weather was really good, but our two boys 9 and 11, plus a friend 11, had a great time. On arrival we realised that we had been put in field 6, our youngest son has cerebral palsy so we needed to be near the toilets and showers and the people in reception were wonderful, they quickly moved us to field 3, apologising because I did mention when booking that we had a disabled child. The camp was great for us the facilities for disabled people are excellent. Well done to all concerned and we will be visiting again. The callow top home brew we can recommend also, thank you for a wonderful stress-free weekend.

July 2004 Just returned from a wet and windy first visit to Callow Top. This is a great site and perfect for children even though it rained all weekend apart from the sunday morning that we came home. As this was only our second trip out with our very old caravan we were a little bit unsure what to do. Apart from losing our skylight on the way there we had a fantastic time. I agree with other reports that there could be more waste bins but the showers and toilets were cleaned regularly and everyone was very friendly. We were in field 2 pitch 33, according to some reports this must be the worst place to be - right opposite the play area and the club room. Yes we could hear the disco at 6.00pm but it was far better than living with a teenage daughter and her music. Yes the site is busy but very friendly and perfect for families - we say go and make up your own mind and like us you will return again soon.

July 2004 Just returned from a 2 night stay -Fri and Sat. Pitched in field 6, plenty of room although the grass could have been cut before the weekend. Other fields the grass was much shorter. We were grateful for the activities in the cafe as the weather was poor on the Saturday - rained all day. The 2 boys aged 14 and 10 could play table tennis, pool etc. It is a very busy site but I believe that the staff do all they can to help and keep the place clean. Would benefit from more points to get rid of rubbish. We will certainly visit again.

June 2004 This is a large site with some great facilities; showers OK - a bit hit an miss whether you got a drenching or a dribble. The toilets were regularly cleaned and kept in good condition. Good washing up facilities.
The site was a bit too noisy at night with some people having no consideration for others, partly due I feel to the nightclub and pub plus just the sheer number of people staying.
Overall, our stay at Callow Top was a pleasant experience.

June 2004 We stayed at Callow Top from Friday afternoon until Sunday. You're supposed to be off by 12 midday but the nice lady said that if no-one was booked on our pitch then we could stay until tea time.
We were quickly through reception at about 3:00 pm Friday and found our pitch on field 6. Pitches on field 6 are 30ft by 30ft which was adequate for our Outwell Hartford XXL!
We were a little apprehensive as this was our first weekend camping with the kids (4 and 19 months) but there were plenty of other kids, some even younger.
Facilities were good with the following reservations.
The play area had a decent amount of kit for the kids but is too small for the size of the site. Subsequently, there were a fair few older kids smoking and belting a football about in close proximity to the 1-2 year olds. Not good and their parents should be ashamed. The play area needs an age restriction and some expansion!
There was an arcade room which had some of the oldest arcade games in it that I have seen for a long time! Space Invaders anyone? Pole Position!
The pub was pretty OK. Having kids excludes you from the main bar area but we sat outside as the evenings were nice and sunny. Saturday night, there is a disco which runs until 11:00 pm and you can hear this clearly even on field 6.
We found the facilities to be very clean and well maintained. Our spot on field 6 was very nice (field 4 looked nice also). We would come back.

May/June 2004 An excellent site for campers with children. Very busy throughout the season so would recommend booking. Staff very friendly. Pub on site sells some good local beers although food served is very basic and waiting times from ordering to being served can be up to 1.5hrs, not worth it in my opinion! Good shower and toilet facilities.

28th May 2004 The park, reached by a very steep hill which leads to some cars unable to tow caravans up it, is nice and relaxing and appears to be well laid out. Upon closer inspection the pitches are rather close together when your car is beside your tent, caravan. A well sheltered park and very peaceful, disappointed with the lack of water points in the fields and also a lack of suitable fire points and rubbish collection points and also the fact they charge 20p for 3.5mins for a shower. The play area was a little rowdy and also cars are always busy in that area so wouldn't leave children alone in the area no matter what age. Overall I found the site a little to keen to ask you to be quiet after pub closing and departure day. Personal rating for this site would be 6/10

July 2003 My partner and I and another adult couple visited for a quiet weekend in the Derbyshire countryside. Our camping field was fine and the pub on site is lovely. Although we had a bit of difficulty finding anywhere to sit (the weather was foul) it was OK - nice atmousphere and a decent pint. A pleasant enough site and friendly enough staff (thankyou) but a little too noisy for our liking. Sorry.

Easter 2004 We were very happy with Callow Top, yes the showers were busy, the park was full of kids and the walk from field 6 which we were in to the toilets was a fair way, but we had a wonderful time. Cant see why people complain about how busy a site is or how far away they are from the toilets/showers. We will be going to Callow Top again no doubt perfect first time camping (apart from the weather!!!!)

Easter 2004 Spent 3 nights at Callow Top, and would go again. We arrived on Easter Sunday, so the Bank Hol campers were already there in force. My first impressions were not good - the park seemed overcrowded with campers shoe-horned into narrow pitches and seemed to be overrun with the rowdiest kids you have ever seen! I've got to say, though, that this eased off into the evening and from where we were pitched, there wasn't a problem with noise and although the park appeared full-to-bursting, there was no problem getting showered / washing up etc. On Easter Monday, when the bulk of people left the site, Callow Top took on a whole new atmosphere. Far more peaceful, more areas to kick a rugby ball about and generally a damn fine site. The pub on site is a great place to go when the easter nights get a bit chilly, and wasn't too crowded even on Sunday night, and the toilet / washing areas were very well maintained. But it's the location of the site that really clinched it - direct access to the Tissington trail (a must for walkers or bikers) and a 15 minute stroll to Ashbourne where there are pubs a plenty (many thanks to the staff in the Green Man who put Sky Sports on so we could watch St Helens vs Bradford - pity about the performance :o( ) Overall, a well equipped excellently placed site, but personally I would avoid the particularly busy periods if you like your camping without the bustle. ****/5
