August 2005 Reading the other reviews of this site just shows how different things make people tick.
To me, this site was dreadful. The walk from our pitch on the furthest extremity of the site to the toilet block was so far it required walking boots - hopeless with two little kids who when they need to go, need to go NOW!
When you did get there, you had to queue, in much the same way as you had to queue for a shower and to do your washing up.
While we were there, thankfully only two nights, the site was overrun with the sort of kids who think it's funny to shove enough toilet roll down the pan to block it, then flush and watch the disgusting contents flood everywhere. That was when they weren't climbing underneath the cubicles to lock them from the inside, which was probably the cause of the queue in the first place.
The site has got it right in some aspects. Field 6 is good - a big field with a road round the edge - pitches are located all the way round the edge leaving the middle free for the kids to play.
But, and it's a big but, the owners are trying to squeeze way too much profit out of too little investment. It may be peak season, but the facilities are hopelessly lacking.

May 2005 Pitches were huge, we were in the field furthest from toilets, not too far a walk. Rained a bit while we were there ,so ground a bit boggy that weekend, now we understand why the pitches behind us weren't used. Didn't go to disco but were woken up by the revellers on their way home one night.
Toilets clean & not too much of a wait for the showers even though the site was very busy - 2 blocks to choose from. A bit of trek to the Tissington trail but after the walk down and up a steep field (again very boggy) it was well worth it, the trail was lovely.
We appreciate that the trail is a cycle route as well but most of the cyclist had no manners just riding at full speed through our group. We had dogs that heeled at short notice but i dread to think what would happen to a toddler/ youngster if not quick enough to move.
Don't know if we would go back, site a bit noisy and too busy for us. Will try Derbyshire again though.

August 2004 This site was recommended to us, but after 3 nights we returned home early! 2 adults and 2 children and we have been camping / caravanning for many years so have some experience. In our opinion, this site is not as good as it would appear.
The field we were in had very long grass which had not been cut for several weeks - hence it was wet! Muddy, wet & Muddy and it was not particularly wet weather! No water in the field and a long walk to the toilets at night when it is extremely dark - no light on the field what so ever!
The toilets and showers were appalling. Filthy dirty and smelling - all the time. Did not witmess a cleaner who did their job properly. Insufficient facilities for the size of the camp, dirty, expensive and most of the staff are no more than kids themselves - ie 15/16 years old. No manager ever available to deal with our concerns! Will never go again!!!!!How they won awards I don't know!!

July 2005 We've been here several times over the past years. The pitches are in rally fields with loads of space all the way round. The pub green is in viewing distance of the children's playground so mine were off.
The pub is reasonable and the food is good and they don't mind you bringing and drinking your own beer on the green. There was a good atmosphere on saturady night provided by an open air disco on green until 10.30pm.
There is good facilities hot showers, washing up water and a shop that is tiny but provides the essentails. The only downside is there is only one road in and out through the site which gets busy with cars, kids bikes and pedestarians.
Also this site is a lovely walk away from Ashborne about 1 and half miles away, along Tissington trail. I would recommend this site and it is one of the better ones to stay on.

June 2005 Went here for 2 nights with a group of people - 6 adults and 5 kids! We had a good time. The only down side is that we were in field 7 and it is the furthest field from the loos, showers and all other facilities, taking a few minutes to get to and from them, but there are other camping fields closer to everything (not sure if you can request which field you stay in).
There was a bit of confusion when we arrived with car registrations, but after a few minutes we were through and pitching our tents. The pitches were nice and flat and there was plenty of space between us and our neighbours! The kids had lots of room to run around and play games in front of the tent.
The pool was great for the kids and the pub was great for the adults!!!!!The loos and showers were very clean (showers cost 20p for 3-4 mins)and there is a small well priced shop. We were all impressed with the sight and will be returning in the future!

July 2005 Choose this park for our first camping trip, and was very pleased. The facilities were kept clean, showers & hairdryer cost 20p & worth every penny. The shop was reasonably priced & well stocked. Picked a red hot weekend and the site was full. An excellant site & will definitely be visiting again.

July 2005 Crammed in like sardines, queues for booking in, water and showers, good for kiddies though even if a little dangerous due to the amount of youngsters tearing around on bikes. Good pub and well worth the (long) wait for food. Not for those who like to lie in bed past 6.30am.

July 2005 We have just come back from Callow Top Camp Site. Overall this is a very good site with excellent facilities, heated pool, pub, shop, bike hire and much more.
We would recommend field 4 as this is close to the facilities and has its own water tap. We were on pitches 29 and 30 but one thing we would say about these pitches is that they can be a bit noisy due to the main access road to other fields behind and it is by the entrance to the field.
The site was very busy with children but then it is a family campsite. If you are child free couples looking for peace and quite this isnt the site for you.
Overall we could not fault the site, staff were friendly, the site was very well maintained and litter free. The toilets were cleaned on a regular basis.
We would definitley return if in this area.

June 2005 We visited Callow Top having seen their advert on ukcampsite. As you can imagine, a hot weekend brought a full campsite. - We booked but were still placed in field 7. This had advantages - we were away from the noise and the views were fantastic and disadvantages - there is no water on field 7, There is a tap on field 6 which is a fair walk when you are carrying a full water container. The site owners brought out a "water butt" on a tractor and placed it in field 7 on friday afternoon, but that water sat in there till sunday. We talked to a few campers who said they found it a struggle as the toilet facilities were in the main area of the campsite, which was quite a walk if you had small children. In all the campsite is clean and has good facilities for children (even if the play area is next to the drive - we saw a child run out in front of a car which was quite scary.) The pool is a bonus but was extremely busy with children and adults leaping onto inflatables. There was no room to swim but it was at least cooling. At the very least, there should be running water on all fields and perhaps even toilets between fields 6 and 7 which each have 55 pitches.

June 2005 We have just got back from spending 4 nights at Callow top caravan and camping park. The site has grown since we visited last year but the facilities have not. They are still excellent and are kept clean and tidy considering the site has now got 700 caravan/tent pitches in 7 fields. Unfortunately this visit was a lot more noisier than in the past due to the large number of children on site. Some nights we didnt get to sleep until gone 12 because of the noise, but then again it is a family site after all. If you want piece and quiet we would recommend going from Sunday night onwards. We noticed a big difference after Sunday and by the evening the site was almost empty. Then it was sheer bliss(the Callow Top we love).
This site has got a lot going for it. It is very close to Ashbourne and only around an hours drive to anywhere in Derbyshire which makes it a good base to travel from. Definitely one of the best in Derbyshire (when quiet).
