South Lytchett Manor is a truly excellent site, and the word is not lightly used. In fact, I might have to refer to my thesaurus before the end of this review or I might be guilty of wearing the word out. But the simple fact is, for us, this is that rare treasure; the perfect campsite.

The effort that goes into the maintenance of the facilities can be detected as soon as you drive between the gateposts; not for this site the ragged edges and wilting pre-fabs we have experienced elsewhere. Everything is neat, sturdy and welcoming.

Inside, the shower/toilet blocks are never anything but spotless, assisted by being tiled floor to ceiling. Never any shortage of free hot water. It is also greatly to their credit that the site has laid on separate, larger shower rooms with facilities for the use of the disabled and for families. Quite what you think about the steam of easy listening music piped into the shower blocks is a matter of opinion but after raising an initially sceptical eyebrow, I realised how homely it made what could otherwise have been an almost sterile atmosphere.

The site shop / reception is well stocked for all those camping emergencies (including the dreaded burst airbed!) and the locally supplied sausages are well worth sampling (sorry…. Hugo the puppy told me to put that in!)

As for the pitches…. Well, how can I put it. We’ve got a big tent; must be 30 or 40 pegs to go in, as well as a dozen fence stakes. It says something to a hardened camper that I didn’t hit a single stone or bend a single peg as I hammered away on our pitch under the welcome shade of the trees. It also speaks volumes that, after the heavens opened and, as Terry Pratchett put it, the sea tried to reclaim the land by airdrop (last days of July 2013, you remember) I stepped out of the cover of the tent into neither of the expected options; namely a. A mud bath or b. A puddle the size of a football field. A field that can sop up that much water, leaving damp but firm grass and nothing else, must be magnificently drained.

But what stands out for us is the unfettered doggy friendliness of the place. Being a family of 3 humans, 4 dogs and one puppy this is a quality we have so far sought in vain. Many campsites claim to be dog friendly but, when visited, prove to be nothing more that dog-tolerant, offering little or no consideration and less facility to more than 50% of our family. But SLM truly deserve the accolade of doggy friendliness. The off-lead exercise field, (with its own supply of poo bags) rather than the living-room sized patch of mud you usually get, is a field bigger than some parks I’ve been to and could hold another 50 pitches if they chose so to do. But this well-mown grass field is exclusively for our furry friends. Or, for variety, an on-lead woodland walk is on site for a bit of doggy networking.

And I have to mention the café at the craft centre, a 2-minute walk over the field, whose Dorset cream teas and cooked breakfasts are absolutely to die for (they’re doggy friendly too - the café, that is; fried breakfasts are not good for doggies. )

To sum up, we have never before been so impressed by a site that we have decided that we’ll definitely return to it next year. But South Lytchett Manor……we’ll be back.

Very nice Site. Clean and tidy with lovely Flowers around site. Facilities very good, free hairdryer. There is a Rotary line you can use. Two nice Pubs with good Food, we liked the Bakers Arms £20 for Sunday Roast worth the Money. St Peters Finger nice but be careful what meal you have we did not get a free bottle of Wine. Buses outside every hour, then Poole Bus station where you can go anywhere. Some Staff friendly. Not far from Bristol.

Won a Competition for a hoilday at a 'Best of British' campsite and picked South Lytchett Manor. All communications with the site were professional and to the point. We arrive a little after 1300 on the day we were booked in for and once I had do the required paperwork etc were shown to our pitch by a member of staff.

The pitch was a good size and more than big enough for a A frame tent. We were pitched in the middle road area near to the central toilet block and with easy access to the Craft Center walk.

Overall the site was well maintained and busy - the weather was great not one drop of the cold wet stuff while we were there so loads of people decided to come camping. Well situated on a bus route - the famous Number 40 'Breezer' between Poole and Swanage - so the car was left to get dusty while we used the bus.

The showers were clean and the music was a nice touch - don't think I heard the same song twice in 10-days there!

The only downside was lack of child facilities - a small play park and a 'games' room don't really keep the kids busy on a hot summers evening.

We chose this site at the last minute for a two night stay based on location and availability (plus all the favourable reviews). We were not disappointed at all by the site. On arrival we were checked in and shown to our pitch which was near the playground - handy for entertaining the kids while we put the tent up. I agree with all other comments about the general cleanliness and maintenance of the site - excellent all round. Our pitch (no. 81) had a bit of a slope towards the back which made the bedrooms in the tent difficult to arrange in a non-rolling way. There was a fair amount if road noise from the nearby A31 but we live near the A34 so are somewhat used to this. Nothing a decent set of earplugs can't solve. I would certainly recommend the site for families with young children. Very quiet at night and plenty of space in the two huge fields for ball games and general running about.

What a lovely touring site. No statics, no cabins, just a good mix of tourers, tents and camper vans. We stayed for 4 nights on our way back from France. The weather was glorious. We had a fully serviced large pitch with our own picnic table. Immaculate shower block, free wifi, great satellite reception. Friendly staff. The only small criticism would be that some of the standard pitches have no shade. Not a problem in most English summers but in July 2013 it would have been, Knoll beach towards Swanage is lovely, safe for kids. The New forest is on your doorstep. A great site in a beautiful area.

Having just returned after a fortnight of absolutely spectacular weather, I can definitely say we really enjoyed our time staying at this site.

As others have stated, the shower/loo blocks are spotless (with fresh flowers and an interesting variety of piped music), the wi-fi is free, the pub is only a short walk away, the craft centre is practically on-site, the shop is well stocked and the staff are friendly and helpful.

You can hear some traffic on the A35, but it's more background noise than anything - we were woken by the birds, not the traffic!

We just had a couple of niggles. Sometimes the wi-fi and internet connection was slow to the point of not working, which made it a bit hard to check out the websites/directions for some of the places we wanted to visit, but it was free, so can't really complain, and when it was working ok we were getting over 30 Mbps, which was excellent. The other niggle is the showers - the way the cubicles are designed, along with the 'nozzle' shower head, means the floor in the dressing area gets wet (and so do your shoes the first time until you learn not to leave them on the floor!).

Our pitch was reasonably level, and was a really good size.

We'd definitely stay at this site again. It's not quite the ultra-modern, uber-luxury glamping style site we've stayed at on other occasions, but this was definitely reflected in the price, too! It's a lovely, clean, well-run site and I'd not hesitate to recommend it.

We stayed at this site last week. First impressions was that the site was immaculate and very well tended. Shower facilities extremely clean. Did worry on arrival whether I would be queuing for a shower as the site appeared to be full but surprisingly during our weeks stay I didn't have to wait once. A very short walk to a really good pub where we ate three times during the week. A few too many dogs on site for my liking but I can see the attraction for dog lovers as there are two really good dog walks. People on site really friendly and a well stocked shop. I do wish people would not take rotary dryers on holiday. A small airer yes but too look out on all three sides of the caravan at everyone's washing was just a bit like being at home. A most enjoyable stay

What a fantastic site, so relaxing, beautifully kept grounds and pitches. The amenities closest to us were checked four times a day, with a closure at 12 noon for a thorough clean (caravan club please take note of this, fed up with the daily rush to get to the loo and shower by 10. 30am. )

Newspapers available without having to order them daily, fresh eggs, lots of bits and bobs in the shop. Great having a good bus service (No 40) to take you into Poole one way and Swanage the other. Try to visit Wareham (along the Swanage route). Beautiful small town, lots of nice pubs, shops, restaurants (try Harry's Bar). Lovely river. From Swanage catch the No 50 bus to Bournemouth, takes you on the ferry to Sandbanks and then on to Bournemouth (bus pass owners amongst us all free - others £8 day ticket does the lot).

South Lytchett has totally spoilt us for visiting other sites. This is now our No 1. Thank you so much.

Without doubt a very clean and well kept site with helpful staff. Disappointed to find that a Superior Pitch (not offered or advised at booking via the phone of the differences) was inferior to a Deluxe pitch meaning a long walk for water and waste. For a site of this size at a very busy time queuing for a shower or a toilet on a daily basis was just not good enough. In simple terms not enough toilets/showers for the size of the site. Facilities for washing clothes were on site but 2 washers and driers with average 40-60 minute cycles and a busy camping area meant an early morning or late night dash to try and capture a machine. Could do with more play areas for the children, one small play area at the entrance to the site meant a long accompanied walk to allow the children to play. As far as value for money goes we think it was expensive when other sites in the area are offering more for the same money or less. Not normally critical of clean sites but this one was let down by the quantity not the quality
